DISPLAY COVER.
Application filed July 26, 1926. Serial No. 124,981.
This invention relates to display covers and aims to provide an efficient cover which may be readily and conveniently attached to the top of a box or the like permitting ready access to the same and a view of the contents thereof, at the same time protecting said contents.
Covers of the above type which have been in. use heretofore have been comparatively expensive to manufacture and where they have been made adjustable to accommodate for variations in widths of the boxes, a feature quite essential even when the covers are designed for particular types of boxes, the adjustments have been provided for by adjusting the dimensions of the cover itself. Since the cover usually includes a sheet of transparent material of fixed dimensions any adjustments heretofore made in the cover have usually been made in the frameitself. Such adjustments to the frame have usually been limited unless it was desired to obtain an elaborate construction.
In order to overcome the aforementioned difliculties and to obtain an efficient cover of the above type, I provide such a cover in which the frame and transparent material are both of fixed dimensions and incidentally for this reason are held together in a more rugged andefficientmanner than would be possible were the adjustment provided for in the frame itself. The adjustments are provided for through means of supporting brackets for the cover which brackets are adapted to fit the corners of the boxes for which the cover is adapted and which are connected to the cover through means of slightly elongated pivot members. The pivot members are rigidly secured to the brackets and are slidable as well as rotatable in bearing apertures in the side flanges of the cover permitting lateral movement of the said brackets relative to the said cover so that said brackets may be adjustably positioned to accommodate for the different widths of the boxes.
Other advantageous features of my invention will be apparent from the specification and claims when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein Fig. 1 represents a plan view of a cover embodying this invention;
Fig. 2 is a. fragmentary front elevational view of the same;
' transparent material such Fig. 3 is a fragmentary vertical section taken at the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary side elevationai view showing the cover in open position;
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detailed isometric sketch of one of the supporting brackets fol.- the cover.
Referring to the drawing more particularly, numeral 1 represents a rectangular frame formed of sheet metal and consisting of a rectangular flat portion 2, having a rectangular opening 3 and depending flanges 4 at three of the sides of said frame, said flanges extending from the outer edges of said flat portion. The fourth edge of the fiat portion 2 which is not provided with a flange 4 as are the other edges, is provided with a marginal extension 5 which is bent slightly upwardly from said edge for a purpose which will be apparent hereinafter.
lVithin the opening 3 is secured a sheet of ascelluloid or the like. The sheet 6 is of suflicient dimensions to overlap the edges of the opening 3 and to extend on the under side of the flat portion 2. Suitable strips 7 riveted to the underside of the flat portion 2 adjacent the edges of the opening 3 therein engage the edges of the transparent material 6 for holding the same securely in the frame 1.
The two opposite flanges at are each apertured near the end thereof adjacent the marginal extension 5 to receive elongated pivot; members 8.
The elongated pivot members 8 have each of their outer ends provided with a suita 10 head and their inner ends each riveted or otherwise suitably secured to a supporting bracket 9. The brackets 9 are each similar and are adapted to be conveniently slipped over adjacent corners of a box at the upper edge thereof, as for instance, a cooky box containing food or other substance which is desired to be accessibly displayed and at the same time protected. In Fig. 5 one of the brackets 9 is shown in detail and consists of a rectangular plate bent along a vertical line intermediate its ends so that it has two portions at right angle to each other. Each portion or arm of bracket 9 is provided with a spring clip 10 on its inner side integral with its upper ed 'e and extending inwardly and downwardly therefrom.
The containers or boxes 11 with which the GNOR TO FIBER-GLASS FOOD COVER afore-described cover including the supports therefor, is adapted to be used, may be the original containers for the merchandise desired to be displayed and are adapted to vary somewhat in their dimensions. 'Notwith standing any such variation, the brackets 9 of the cover may be conveniently slipped on the top edges of such containers at the corners thereof and the elongated pivot members 8 will accommodate for the variation.
I am aware that many changes may be made and many details of construction varied Without departing from the principles of this invention and I do not wish to be limited to the details shown or described.
I claim:
1. In combination, a cover, and supporting members adjacent the ends o'fthe cover and pivoted thereto for hingedly supporting said cover, each of said members being adapted for securement to a container and being adjustable in the direction of the hinge axis to vary the distance between said sup porting members.
2. The combination comprising a cover frame of fixed dimensions, a sheet of transparent material rigidly secured in said frame, supporting brackets forrsaid frame adapted to be secured at the top of a container, and means for connecting said brackets to said frame including pivot members, said members being considerably lengthened to permit lateral movement of said brackets relative to said frame for accommodating for any variation in the Width of said container.
3. In combination, a cover, and supporting members adjacent each end of the cover and pivoted thereto for hingedly supporting said cover, at least one of the members having relative adjustment in the direction of the hinge axis to vary the distance between'said supporting members, the supporting members being adapted for securement to a container. 1
4c. The combination comprising a cover, supporting brackets for said cover adapted to be secured at the top of a container, and means'l or connecting said brackets to said cover including pivot members, said members being considerably lengthened to permit lateral movement of said brackets relative to said cover for. accommodating any variation in the Width of saidcontainer.
5. In combination, a cover having depending end flanges, supporting members adapted for securement to a container, and elongated pivots secured to the supportingmembers and extending through said flanges, the supporting members being adjustable toward and away from said flanges.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name this 14th day of July, 1926.
