This invention relates to improvements inV window attachments, having for an objectV to` provide a. novel and advantageous form* of window sill Vshelf or support especially usefulw for secure arrangement upon the sill of'a window, whereby variousobjeets, as for, example, ower boxes', fiower pots, window refrigerators, Q may be conveniently and2 safely supported thereupon without liability of displacement and falling, the device affordinglthe window sill with an enlargedY refV ceiving.andV supportingarea as well as van efficient guard means to prevent displacement or falling. of an objecty therefrom.
It is also an equally important object of the invention-'to'provide a device of the characterzinentioned which may be conveniently' adjusted in length to conform to the length of the sill of a window to which the same is to-be'secured, whereby the sides of said device'w'illbe brought into positions adjacent the window frame sides for facilitatingthe positive connection thereto and the resultant fixing of the device in positionwith respect to the window, said sides`being rmly braced with respect to the body or base portion of the; shelf when so adjusted.
It is also'among the aims and objects of the inventionto provide a. window support or shelf of simple and' cheapconstruction, in which the number of parts are few but of a durable andV rugged construction, their relative arrangement and mode of connectionbein'g such as to allow of compact arrangement of the same when in disassembled relation, wherebyto require but a minimum amount of shippingspace, `and with assembly, to permit of their arrangement in nested relation, thus minimizing store room space.
Other objects of the invention will be in part obvious and in' part pointed out hereinafter.
In order that the invention and its mode of operation may be readily understood by those skilled in the art, I have in the accompanying illustrative drawings and in the detailed following description based thereupon, set out one possible embodimentof the invention. y

To' provide theextension means 10 with means Vfor securing the same in adjusted positions with respect to the base 1, arcuate slots 13 are formed in the same and receive the lower portions of adjusting bolts 14 therethrough, said bolts, of course, having been passed through suitable openings in adjacent portions of the base 1 whereupon locking nuts 15 are turned into engagement with their lower extremities. Hence, with sliding adjustment of the extension means 10, such means may be then securely locked in their respective positions by tightening the-locking nuts 15 upon their particular adjusting bolts 14E.
In adjusting the end walls 6 of the device so that the length thereof will approximately conform to the length of the window sill receiving the same whereby positive connection can be effected as between the inner extremities of said end walls and the adjacent sides of awindow frame, it will be understood that such end walls are swung outwardly withrespect to the base l, thus Hexing the inturned anges 4 upon vthe opposite ends of the front wall 3. in using the improved shelf, it will be understood that the same is arranged upon the sill of a. window to be equipped therewith. If `the lengthk of the shelf, when in its normal position, corresponds to the length of said sill, then the reenforced inner end portions 8 of the end walls 6 are connected to adjacent portions of the sides of the window-frame, by screws, bolts or other suitablefastening devices. If however, the length of-thebase 1 is less than thatofthe window sill, thenthe opposite end walls 6 are forced outwardly with respect to each other, having substantially pivotal movement with respect to the-op'posite'ends of the front wall 3 through the medium of the connectionbetween the end walls and-the flexible flanges 4. l/Vhenl the end walls 6 have been properly adjusted so that .the inner extremities or reenforced portions 8 thereof are adjacent portions of the opposite sides of thejwindow frame, fastening devices arepassed through the openings 9 in such reenforced extremities and the shelf is thus firmly secured in position with respect to the equipped window.` Subsequently to adjustment of the extension means 10, it of course will be understood that the locking nuts lfwill be tightened upon their respective adjusting bolts 14 so Athat a positive bracingvr connection will have been established-as between the base 1 and said extension means 10. Becausel of the forming of the anges 2 and 11 upon the base l and the extension means l0, it will be understood that these parts will not only be materially reenforced and rendered substantially inflexible to weights o-r other stresses directed thereonto, but also, that the portions will be supported at points above the equipped window sill, thus serving to lessen liability of premature deterioration of said window sill, in event that the same is of wood or similar perishable construction.
For purposes of ornamentation or finish l may and preferably do scallop the upper portions of the front and end walls of the device and likewise, to reenforce the walls against undue transverse flexing of themselves, channels are pressed therein as indicated by the numeral 16, such channels extending longitudinally throughout the length of their respective walls.
Manifestly, the construction shown is capable of considerable modification, and such modification as is within the scope of my claims, I consider within the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
l. A device of the character described comprising a base, a front wall detachably connected to the forward side of said base and disposed throughout the length thereof, end walls of lengths greater than the width of said base detachably connected to the opposite ends of the front wall, extension means arranged adjacent the opposite end portions of said base having adjustable slidable connection to said base, and the outer sides of said extension means being detachably connected to the adjacent portions of said end walls and spaced inwardly from the respective inner ends of said end Walls.
2. A device of the character described comprising a base, having flanged sides, a front wall having flexible flanged ends detachably connected to one of the flanges of said base and disposed throughout the length thereof, the flanged ends being inturned and overlapping the adjacent opposite ends of the base, end walls detachably connected to said inturned front wall flanges, extension means arranged adjacent the lower face and opposite ends of said base having adjustable slidable connection with the base, and the outer sides of said extension means being detachably connected to the inner faces and lower portions of said end walls and spaced inwardly from the respective inner ends of said end walls.
3. A device of the character described comprising a base having flanged sides, a front wall having flexible flanged ends detachably connected to one of the flanges of said base and disposed throughout the length thereof, the flanged ends being inturned and overlappingl the adjacent end portions of the base, end walls detachably connected to said inturned front wall flanges, wing-like extensions of substantially V-shaped formation arranged adjacent the lower face and opposite end portions of said base having adjustable sliding connection with the base, the various sides of said extensions having downturned flanges formed thereupon, and those flanges upon the outer sides of said extensions being detachably connected to the inner faces and lower portions of said end walls and spaced inwardly from the respective inner ends of said end walls.
