This invention relates to improvementsin trunk or fsuitcase valances. 1 Q
In the ordinary yalance construction the side flangesare 'ofjan equal length and en L gage the edge portions .of a trunk wall an equal distanceon'both sides. Consequently, the securing means for I the valance, usually rivets, must extend through b'oth valance flanges and'the interposed wall. The use of rivets forthis purpose is comparatively expensive and the riveting process is somewhat slow. a
It is, therefore, the primary object of the present invention to overcome the above obldj jection by providing a trunkor suitcase valance in which one flange is considerably shorter than the other, whereby nails or pins may be used for the valance securing means, it being necessary for the securing means to 2 pass through only one thickness of metal and the trunk wall, and this arrangement reduces the expense of the'valance securing means, reduces the time consumed in the attachment of valances, and provides for a, thinner wall edge.
A further object of the invention is to provide a trunk valance extending aroundthe providedwit'haf tongue valance, generally indlcated by the numeral 13, while .th'ewalls of adjacent edge portions of the walls of the trunk sections and forming apractically dust and water proof tongue and groove oint between thesections.
A further object of the invention is to provide a trunk or suitcase valance which is of very simple construction, is inexpensive, is strong and durable, and is well adapted for the purposes described. e v v With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of the improved trunk or suitcase valance, and its parts and combinations as set forth in the claim, and all equivalents thereof.
In the accompanying drawings in which the same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the views:
Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view of a small trunk or wardrobe suitcasewith the sections opened with respect to each other, the edge portions being provided with the improved valance;

sectional view showing a air of meeting wallsand the improved va ance forming a joint between the wall edges; Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary detail view of a section corner'and the valance arrangement; V V
4 is a fragmentary-view of a section corner showing a slightly modified form of valance therefor; and I Fig; 5jis a similar view with'one portion of the. valance corner removed to show details of construction.
Referring now drawings, itwill appear that the numeral 8 indicates a wardrobe suitcase having a pair more particularly to the ofc'o'mplementarysections}?and 10 adapted o'penedand closeduwith respect to each other. j The outer edgeportionsof the'wallsflll of the section 10 aread'a'pted to meetfth'e' outer edge po'rtionsfof'the walls 12 of; the section 9, when the sections are closedwith respecttoeachother, and to former dust and wiater-proofltOngue and groove joint between said adj ace'nt edges,
an'ce construction is provided. 1
-Thewalls of one ofthe sections, as 10, are

17 f embrace-the. outer edge portionsof the outer and inner. faces, respectively, ota wall lli and the attaching means comprise pins 18extended through the outer 'fiange'16, the l veneer board layers of the wall, and arethen bent over, as at 19, against the inner surface of said wall. Because of the short flange '17 the pin only has to extend through one thick- 'ness of valance metal and yetthe valance is adequately, secured, and fthe bent over portions 19"of'the pin do not protrude beyond the thickness of the flange 17 The inner sur-.
The securing means is the same as that de-' scribed for the tongue valance 15, consisting of light pins 18 extending through the outer face long flange, the wall veneer layers, and bent. over at 19 against the inner surface of the wall inwardly of the short flange- Also between thevalance of the Wallis a. wall edge embracing fabric strip 21 and the inner sur- 1 faces of the wallshave linings 20.
The valance arrangement for a corner is illustrated in Fig. 3 wherein the veneer plies of the walls 12 meet at right "angles and an outer curved re-enforcing band 25; is pro vided. The valance members 14 terminate short of the junction of the walls. While the corner construction for a groove valance has been shown, the tongue valance corner arrangement is carried out in the same way.
In Figs. 4 and 5 a modified form of. corner construction and the valance arrangement therefor has been illustrated. The corner is of the re-enforced type, wherein the veneer plies 11 extend into a corner post member 26, and the latter is covered externally by a fab ric leather or composition band 29. A short intermediate curved valance member 27 is mounted on the upper outer-edge portion of the post 26 and the end portions of's'aid member 27 are slightly reduced, as-at 27". The
two adjacent walls 11 are covered by an integrail valance member 13f, which, at its midportion is cut-away, so that only the long outer flange portion remains forming an outer curved strap 28 which engages the outer surface of the member 27. The tongue portions 15" of the valance slightly overlap thereduced portions 27 of the member 27 and hold said member firml'y in position.
The valance 13", as in the principal form,
a has a long outer flange and a' short inner seen that the improved valance. construction for-trunks, suitcases-,or the like is both simple and novel, and is well adapted for the purposes described.
What I claim as my invention is:
In a two-section container, the adjacent edge portions of the section walls being in juxtaposition when the sections are closed with respect to each other, grooved valance members mounted on the outer edge portions of the walls I of one section, and tongue valance member mountedon. the. outer edge portions of the walls'of the, other of said sections, said tongue and groove valance members being inter-fitting, each valance member having spaced apart sides engaging opposite surfaces of'the section wall and its outer side bein considerably longer than the other, and headed, bendable metallic securing extended through only thelon-g outer sides of the valancemembers, and the respective section walls and having their end portions bent over against. the lnner surface of the Walls substantially flush with the short inner sides of the valance. members i In testimony whereof l. affiX. my signature.
