c. H. LEONARD WRENCH Filed 061;. 23, 1926 attorney Patented Dec. 27, 1927.
CARL LEONARD, F PENDER, NEBRASKA.
wnmron.
Application filed October 23, 1926. Serial No. 143,736.
This invention relates to wrenches and it is an object of the invention to provide a tool of this kind which comprises a pair oi relatively movable jaws normally in open or spaced arrangei'nent together withhandle operated means for causing said jaws to move one toward the other to properly engage the work and thereby dispensing with any supplemental or auxiliary adjusting means.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts or" my improved wrench whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device ren dered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, 1 will now proceed to de scribe the same with reference to the ac companying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a View in side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention, a second position of certain of the parts being indicated by broken lines; i
Figure 2 is a view in edge elevation of the structure as illustrated in Figure 1 with a portion broken away; i 1
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line of Figure 1. 7
As disclosed in the accompanying drawing, 1 denotes an elongatedhandle member having an intermediate arcuate portion 2 and continued at one end by a laterally extending arm 3. This arm 3 terminates in an outstanding jaw 1.
Slidably mounted on the arm 3 is a movable jaw 5 provided at opposite sides of the arm 3 with the pockets or openings 6 in whichare freely engaged the spaced fingers 7 arranged at the outer end of the elongated arm 8. i
Carried by the handle member 1 at opposite sides thereof and extending in the same general direction as the arn13 are the plates 9 between which the second end portion of the arm 8 extends and pivotally supported thereby through the medium of the rivet 10 or the like. By this means, the arm 8 is adapted to have desired swinging movement a to move the jaw 5 toward or from the jaw 4. A second handle member 11 hasone end portion extending between the plates 9 and pivotally engaged therewith by a rivet 12 or the like. The pivoted portion-of the hall dlemember 11 is continued by the forked arm 14 substantially atrightangles to the handle member 11 and which straddles the pivoted end portion of the arm 8. i a 1 The extremities of the forked arm 1 1 are pivotally connected by the rivet 15 or jaw 5 toward the jaw 1. This movement of the jaw 5 assures effective engagement with a nut or other work between the jaws 4 and 5, the wedge member 16, efiectively locking the jaws in such engagement until the hair dle member 11 is released.
The arm 8 is constantly urged inwardly toward the handle member 1 by the spring leaf 17 having one end portion anchored, as at 18, to the pivoted end portion of the handle member 11, the opposite or free end portion of the spring leaf 17 being in direct contact with the arm 8. j a i i The handle member 11 is constantly urged outwardly through'thc medium of the spring 19 interposed between the handle members 1 i L and 11 and, herein disclosed, as anchored, as at 20, to the handle member 1. i
As is illustrated in Figure 1 of the draw ing, themarginal portion of the arm 3 adjacent theouter end thereof is provided with a wire receiving notch '21 with which the body portion 5 of the jaw 5 is adapted to coact to provide an effective wireoutter.
The outer extremity of the handle memher 1, as herein disclosed, is beveled, as at 22, to provide a screwdriver blade.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a wrench constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spir t thereof and for this reason 1 do not wish to be understood as llmlting myself to the precise a r 'angement and formation of the several partshcrein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as here inafter claimed. Iclaimz- 1. A wrench comprising a handle member provided with an arm, a jaw carried by said arm, a movable jaw slidable on the arm, a second arm carried by the handle member for swinging movement, an end portion of the second arm having sliding engagement with the movable jaw, a wedge member interposed between. the second arm andthe handle member and having movement independently of both the second arm and the handle member and means for-moving said wedge member ina direction tocausewthe second arm to slide the movable jaw toward secondarm carried by the handle member for swingingmovement, an end portion of the second arm havlng SllCllIl'g engagement with the movablejaw, a wedge member interposed between the second arm and the hand-lomember and having movement indepcn'dentlyof both the second arm and the handle member, means for mov ng sald wedge member in a direction to cause the second air-ml to slide the movable j aw toward the first jaw, and means TE OF'CODSlJZrHblY urging the secondarm in the opposite direction.
3. A wrench con'lprising a handle member provided with an arm, a jaw carried by said arm, amovable jaw slldable on therarm a second arm carried by the handle" member forswlnging movement, an end portionoi the second arm having sliding engagement with the movable jaw, a wedge member interposed betweenthesecond arm and" the handle member, and means for moving said 1 Wedge member in a direction to cause the second arm to slide" the movable .j aw toward thefirst jatvysa'id second arnrcarrying a fork freely engageable withinpockets forlned in the mow' able-jaw. a r
4. A wrench-comprisin r ajhandle member providedrwitlr an arm, a jaw carried by said" arm, a movable jaw slidable on the" arm, a second arm CEHTIBd byzthe handle member for swingingv movement, an end portion of terposed between the second arm and the handlemember and enacting therewith and lravirig movement hidependcntly of both the second arm and the handle member, and means for moving sard wedge member m a "direction to canse the second arm to slide the mo "able jaw toward the first jaw, the portion of the handle member with which the wedge member coacts being substantially arcnate;
5. A wrench comprising an elongatedhan dle memberincluding an arm, a jaw carried a by saidarm, a slidable jaw movable onwthc arm, outstanding plates cairrledvby the handle member, a second arm pivotally held by thefplatcn and havingslidablc contactw with the movable jaw a handle member 1 pivotally supported by-the plates, the pivoted end portion of the second handle menr her being continued by a fork straddling the second arm, a wedge member carried by the fork and interposed between the second arm andtheihrstnamed handle nijlember whereby movementot one of thelihandle members toward the other will cause the wedge member to more the secondarm in a direction to slide the movable jaw toward the first namedfi jaw. v i i i i 6. A wrench comprising anelongatedhan-x dle nicnlber including an arm, a jaw carried by said arm, a slidablejaw movable on the arm, outstanding platescarried by the handlemember, a second arn'l pivotall held by the platesaml hzwinn slidable contact with the movable jaw, a handle member .pivotall supported by the plates, the pivoted endwporward the other will cause the wedge member to move thesecond arm in a dlrectioato slide the movable aw toward thefirst named jaw, and. means for normally maintaining the adjacent portions of thehmrdle members I separated.
