PATENT OFFICE.
HERMAN F. NEWMAN, OF ROSENBURG, TEXAS.
ILIERS.
Application filed October 4, 1926.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in pliers.
Une object of the invention is to provide 2n implement of the character described whose jaws, or gripping points, are dis posed, at all times parallel to each other, one of said jaws being fixed to one handle of the pliers and the other jaw being operatively connected with the other handle so as to be moved by said last named handle toard and from the fixed jaw.
Another object of the invention is to provide an implement of the character described which will more securely grip and hold an object than is the case with pliers now in common use for that purpose.
-With the above and other objects in view this invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction, operation and arrangement of parts, an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 shows a side view of the pliers.
Figure 2 shows an edge view thereof, and
Figure 3 shows a side elevation ofa modified form of implement.
Referring now more particularly to the drai'vings, wherein like numerals of reference designate similar parts in each of the figures, the numeral 1 designates a grip handle whose operative end has a fixed jaw 2. Opposing the fixed jaw 2 there is a movable jaw 53 having an integral overturned shank l which moves in a transverse groove 5, adjacent the jaw 2, forming a track in which the shank moves and the outer side of the shank 4 carries a tenon 6, which fits into a corresponding transverse mortise 7. Pivoted to the handle 1 there is a hand lever 8 whose operative end is formed with an arcuate rack face 9, which is in mesh with a corresponding rack face 10, formed on the adjacent side of the shank 4c.
In use, when the handle 1 is gripped and Serial No. 139,375.
the hand lever 8 forced toward it, it will operate to carry the jaw 23 toward the jaw 2, to grip the object sought to be handled and when the hand lever 8 is moved in the other direction the jaw 3 will be carried from the jaw 12. The gripping faces of the jaws will always be parallel to each other and will thus secure a firmer hold on the object, particularly when a polygonal object, such as a nut, is gripped.
What I claim is:
1.. An implement of the character described including a grip handle, and a fixed jaw at the operative end thereof, said handle having a transverse side groove adja-' cent said jaw forming a track, a movable jaw having an overturned shank fitted into said groove, said movable jaw confronting the fixed jaw, said shank and an opposing side of said groove being formed, one with a mortise andthe other with a tenon which fits into said mortise, a hand lever pivoted to said handle, the operative end of said 2. An implement of the character described including a grip handle and a fixed jaw at the operative end thereof, said handle having a side groove adjacent said jaw forn'iing a track, a movable jaw having an overturned shank fitted into said groove, said movable jaw confronting the fixed jaw, said shank and the opposing side of said groove being formed, one with a mortise and the other with a tenon which fits into said mortise, a hand lever pivoted to said handle, the operative end of said lever and the adjacent edge of said shank being provided with intermeshing rack faces, the rack face carried by the operative end of said lever being arcuate.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
HERMAN F. NEWMAV.
