PIPE WRENCH.
Application filed November 13, 1923.
To (all whom it may concern:
Be it known that .l. {lacon ll. Sin'rm'z, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marion, in the county of Marion and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful In'iprovements in Pipe \Vrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tools and more particularly to combination tools.
The primary object of this invention resides in the provision of a tool, which is of such construction that the elements formin its embodiment, broaden its scope of utility in that they may be used for distinct purposes aside from the assisting in the successfully co-operation between them.
A further object of this invention resides in the provision of a tool of the characteheretofore set forth, consisting of an embodiment of elements, which forma compact assen'iblage of tools for various purposes that are conveniently introduced into operation.
.Vith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of elements hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure l is a side view of the tool;
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof;
Fig. 3 is an end view of the tool looking toward the handle;
Fig. l is a detail sectional view on line 4.;4; of Fig. 1.
In the present embodin'ient of this invention, the letter r designates a handle which is provided with a cylindrical bore a, adjacent the inner terminal of which a slot communicates therewith. The aforesaid slot 7) is in communication with slots o and 0 which are disposed at right-angles thereto for a purpose to be hereinafter described.
lVit-hin the bore a of the handle is dis posed a rod D which is retained and limited in its slidable movement through the instrumentality of a lug 15 that projects through the body portion of the handle and is guided by said slot 1) whereupon it is directed to either slot 'v or 0 and thus retained in retracted or extended position. In order to insure an outward n'iovement of said rod when the lug 15 has been moved in Serial NO. 674547.
tension of the handle A.
The terminal of the handle opposite that in which the bore a is disposed, is provided with enlargement or head 2 provided with a rearwardly directed tongue t which is slotted as at 5 and beveled in order that it "lay be utilized for prying tops off boxes and extracting nails therefrom, though the paramount function of its provision lies in its utility as the permanent jaw of a pipe- ,wrench, the same being provided with serrations 3 for gripping a pipe. It will be noted that while said head is capable of the aforesaid utilization, it is further applicable as a hammer through the provision of a lug 1 that extends from the portion 0 of said handle and provides a continuation of the cam face of the head 2 and tongue 4, so that the handle will have a continuous and gradually varying leverage during the application of the head to prying lids off boxes and pulling nails.
In the face 8 of the handle A is formed a dovetail groove 6 that communicates with a rectangular groove (5 for the reception of the base 10 of a removable serrated jaw 11, said jaw being disposed in a position where the same will co-act with .the serrations 8 formed on the inner disposed sur face of said tongue l for gripping a cylindrical piece of material such as pipe or the like.
In order to retain said jaw 11 in its operative position, a cotter-pin 7 or the like is inserted through aligned apertures in the handle that permit the cotter-pin to bear against the rear side of the jaw.
While I have herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the elements as. adopted, I would have it understood that such changes may be resorted to, as may come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention What I claim is:
A tool of the character described comprisinga head having a gradually curved outer surface, a stationary jaw formed on said head, a hollow handle having a dovetailed groove fo-rmedtherein adjacent said head and continued'into a groove of rectangular formation, a removable jaw slidably mounted in said dove-tail groove and disposed in operative relation to said stationary jaw, and a pin passing through aligned openings in the handle adjacent the groove therein to limit moven'ionr. of the removable jaw in the said groove.
In testimony whereof I atiix my signature.
JACOB 1-1. snrrrirt.
