WINDOW LATCH.
Y Application filed September 2, 1926. rSerial No. 133,222."
This invention relates to window latches.
Objects of this invention are to provide a simple. type of window latch which may be applied to the window `sashes in` an inconspicuous manner, and which may be used without damage or abrasion of the sashes, and which nevertheless is effective in operai tion.
l Aio be easily moved past each other, as the tongue will clear the upper end 13 of the Further objects are to provide a novel form of window latchwhch will permit the use of t-he window in an ordinar y and which will also allow the locking of the window in a partially opened condition for ventilation, for instance, and will prevent further opening of the window.
An embodiment of thel invention is shown .in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a face view of the device showing it applied to the window and showing a fragment of the window;
Figure 2 is a sectional view transversely through the window;
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the lin 3-3 of Figure 1. j
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the upper window pane is indicated by the reference character 1, and the lower window pane by the reference character 2. These window panes are carried in an upper sash 3 and a lower sash 4. j The upperysash is provided with a plate 5 secured thereto by means oi screws 6 which are counter sunkv in the plate 5, as shown in Figure 2, and it is to be noted that the lower end of the plate is provided with an enlarged portion 7. This portion 7 forms, in reality, a pair of ears, between which a movable tongue 8 is pivotally carried by means of a pintlepin 9. Preferably, the tongue is'slightly narrower than the space between the .ear-s and is pressed in one direction by means ofa spring 10 which loosely surrounds the pintle pin. This tongue is provided with a latching shoulder which lits a corresponding recess 11 formed in one of the ears 7 as shown in Figures 1 and 3, to thus latch the tongue against inadvertent motion. Preferably, also the tongue is provided with a rounded cut-away portion 12 for easy insertion of the linger when the tongue is turned into the dotted line posi- ,tion .shown in Figure 2. When in thislast mentioned position, the/window sashes may lower window sash.` yThis upper portion 13 ol the lower window sash is provided with a contact or bearing platelheld in place Vby means of a counter sunk screw 15. It
prong 16 to prevent is also provided with a its turning out of place. v
In using the device, the tongueS is rocked` f outwardly at right angles to the upper window sash, as shown in full lines -in Figure 2, and when it is attempted to move either of the saslies, the tongue will contact with the bearing plate `14C and will'arrest and prevent further motion of the sashes.
On the other hand, when it is desired to y operate the windows in the usual manner, it 1s merely necessary to rock the tongue 8 into the dotted line position shown in Figure 2,;where such tongue will pass freely kb Athe lower sash without engagement. It Wi l be seen, therefore, that a very simple and inconspicuous latch has been provided `for ak window which will permitv the partial opening of the window, but will restrain the sashes against further motion.
' Although the invention has been described i in considerable detail, such description is intended .as illustrative rather than limiting as the invention may be variously embodied and as the scope of such invention is to be de termined as claimed.
We claim: y
A latch for ay pair of relatively movable window sashes, said latch comprising a bearing plate carried by one end of one of said sashes, ak second plate carried by the face of the adjacent sash and secured thereto and having projecting ears, a tongue pivotally mounted between said ears and adapted to extend either outwardly at right angles to the second mentioned plate or in alignment therewith, said tongue being adapted tov con tact with t-he bearing plate when it projects outwardly withrespect to'said second mentioned plate, lsaid tongue andl said second mentioned plate having interengaging spring pressed retaining means for temporarily holding said tongue in its outwardly projecting position.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands at -Mil- Vwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and
