. Application filed August 13, 1923. Serial No. 657,024.`
This invention relates vto tools, and more particularlyto tongs or wrenches useful for handling pipes, casing, or like objects. Y y' It is an object ofthis inventioiito provide a simple -and improved tool of the general character specified..`
lt is 'another object of this invention to provide a tool of the character specified having only a few parts, which parts are simple and can be made strong and durable.
The objects and features of my invention Will be best and'vinore'fully understood by reference to, the following description, throughout 'which description reference is ,iad to theaccompanying drawings, in which: F ig. 1 is 'a face view 5 of a wrench of the chain type, constructed in accordance with my invention; ,Y Y 'Y 2 is a detail sectional view of a portionA of the wrench, showing the parts provided bymy invention; and
` Fig. Sis a detail transverse sectional view, taken as indicated by the line 3 3 on Fig. 2.
In accordance 'with the broader .aspects of my invention the construction provided by this inventionr is applicable to, or suitable for embodiment in, wrenches and tongs of varibeconsideied as limiting my invention to ous sizes, types and constructions. The inventionV is particularly suited, however, for application to wrenches or tongs of the chain type, so, thereforeyl will herein disclose a typical construction embodying my' invention in' connection with a wrench ofthe chain type, it being understood, howeveig'that such specific disclosure and reference is not to this or any other'specific application.
In' accordance with myfinvention the Wrench includes, ',generally, a lever 10, work engaging means 11, anda latch 12 for releasably operatively securing the work engaging means in position'for operation.k
The lever 10 includes a handle 13,'and`a.
head '14 at the outer end of the handle.. 'The head 14 is bifurcated so that it ,has jtwo spaced lside parts 15 whichcarry and receive the other Aparts of. the tool, as hereinafter described. The head ltis preferably somewhatenlarged, the side parts 15 being comparatively wide and flat, so that it isV strong and rigid. The lever 10 may, lin practice,-
be forged oi' otherwise formed so that vits several parts are integral, making itsimple, strong and durable. n l
The work engaging means 11, being of the chain type, is in the form of chain, having suitable pintle pins 18. The
15,` and Yprovided at its other end with a jaw 1 16. The particular chain illustrated iii-thedrawings -includes links 17, connected :by side links 17,
at the inner end of the chain, extend between the outermost parts of the side parts 15, and f areconnected with the side parts 15 by a pivot pin 19. vThe jaw 16 is an arcuate jaw, pivot-ally connected to the outer end ofthe chain by a pivot pin 20. The Jaw 16 is made suiiiciently narrow to pass between the side parts 15, and when the means 11V is in operating position on a pipe P, or the like, the jaw 16 extends between ythe parts 1:5. The amount that the jaw extends between the parts is dependentupon the size or diameter of the pipe. If the pipe is small the jawf will extend between the side parts 15 past the inner end ofthe chain. Y
'In accordance with the'preferred form of the finvention,` a gripping plate` 22 is ar-V ranged at the outer portions of the side parts 15. The plate 22 extends between the side parts 15 and is supported` in recesses 23 provided inY the outer Yparts of the side'parts. The outer part or face ofthe plate is provided'with teeth 24 adapted to grip the vwork to which the tool is applied. The plate is provided' with a Vlug.25`,4 which extends between the side parts 15 and the links 17 at the inner end of the chain, to beheld lby lthe pin 19. By this construction the plate iseifectively connected withy the other parts of the tool, although it is free to be moved or forced outI in the recessesltoward the ywork to which the tool is applied. In practice the d pinv :19 is preferably made to iit' more or less tightly through the lug 25 so that theplate does VVnot lswing or move freely but lnormally .stays yseated in `the recesses, as illustrated iii-,the drawings. The preferred form or plate -22 is provided at its back or inner side with a rib 26, which fits between the side 'parts 15 andlacts asy a spacer for the side parts.V Theplate 22serves to more or lessV brace and-reenforce 'thel side parts 15 at their outer portion and Vpresents awide gripf Vping face vthatV is .particularly effectiveA in gripping the work to plied.
