UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

KNOWLES LOOM WORKS, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
JACQUARD INDICATOR FOR BOX LOOMS.
Application filed .Tune 17, 1926. Serial No. 116,750.
This invention relates to improvements in jacquard indicators for box looms and it is the principal object of the invention to render mechanisms of this type positive ina-their movements by a direct connection from the jacquard which insures correct timing of the box motion.
My invention is more particularly an improvement on the type of motion shown in patent to Ryon No. 1,554,297. In that motion there is shown a plurality of horizontally movable slides each supported in part by a pin which passes through a downwardly curved slot. Cord connections from the 5 jacquard move the slide so that the pin will lie either in the right or left hand end of the curved slot. It has been found in practice that the type'of slot shown in said patent does not require the slide to move positively to complete an indicating movement. WVhen a loom is stopped for any reason with the indication half given to the indicator it is found that the slide will rest on the pin at a point intermediate the ends of the slot and the result of thisis that the hooked links which cooperate with the regularly moving actuator both lie in the'path of the latter and either cramp or break the motion. It is a further object of my invention to prevent this. uncertainty of movement of the indicating member by providing a series of detents to cooperate with the members moved by the jacquard.
It has further been found that the actual movement of the controlling part of the box motion which determines which of the shuttles shall become active varies in amount with different types of box motions and it is a furtherobject of my invention to'render the motion applicable to all'styles ofbo x motions by providing an adjustable connec tion between the actuated lever of the indicating mechanism and the box controlling devices.
With these and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings wherein l have shown a convenient embodiment of my invention,
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a loom having my invention applied thereto,
Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of the motion, parts being removed,
Fig. 3 is a top plan view looking in the direction of arrow 3, Fig. 2 and Fig. 4 is a fragmentary vertical section is provided with a connector 16. The forward end of each connector is attached to one or another of a set of hell crank levers 17 and 18 which work inpairs and are connected by links'19 to afioating box lever 20. The lever is operatively-connected to a box rod 21 on the'upper end of which is mougted a series of shuttle boxes indicated at 2 Constantly but oppositely rotating cylinder gears 23 and 24, driven in any approved manner, are located one above and the other below the vibrator gears 14 and are each provided with gear teeth to engage and ro-' tate the vibrator gears 14, depending upon the vertical position of the vibrator lever 13. The matterv thus far described is of common construction and is the usual well-known side 'platerboxmotion such as that shown in Patent No. 551.104.
The mechanism for controlling the vertical position of the vibrator levers 13 cornprises a stand 30 bolted or otherwise secured to 'the loom frame and having a depending foot 31 on which is pivoted as at 32 a cam lever 33 having a roll 3% thereon. Said roll cooperates'with a cam 35 secured to the top shaft'36 of the loom and makes a complete revolution each pick of the loom. An actuator lever 36 is pivoted as at 37 to the stand 30 and is operatively connected to the cam lever by an adjustable link 38 as inclicated inFi'g. 1. i Y
- A stud 39 is secured to and extends laterally from the frame 30 "and has mounted of three-armed levers 40 which as indicated more particularly in Fig. 2 are each pro vided with forwardly and. rearwardly ex tending substantially horizontal arms 41 and 42 and provided also with an upstanding arm 43 having a rounded upper surface' A pin 44 secured to the frame 80 has pivotally mounted thereon a plurality of lifting levers 45, one for each of the levers 40. Each lifting lever is provided with a run 46 terminating in forward and rearward notches 47 and 48, respectively, positioned to receive the upper rounded end of arm 43. Each lever 40 has pivotally connected thereto a pair of lifting hooks 49 and 50 each provided with a notch 51 and an upwardly extending guide 52.
The matter thus far described as being supported on stand 30 is substantially the same as that set forth in the aforesaid pat- -ent to Ryon, the cam 35 causing a vertical reciprocation of actuatorlever 36 to raise a lifting knife 53 each pick of the .loom to en- 'age the notches 51 of whichever hooks have been moved into the path of the knife 53. As the hooks are lifted the corresponding levers 40 will be rocked on pin 39 to cause a change in the vertical position of the vibrator lifting levers 45, the result of which is to change the relation of the associated vibrator gear 14 in regard to the actuating cylinders 23 and 24. a
My improvements relate more particularly to the means for changing the position of the hooks 49 and 50 and also for establishing operative connections between the vibrator lifting levers 45 and the vibrator levers 13. with a horn 60 provided with a stud 61 on which is pivotally mounted a plurality of controller levers 62 each provided with spaced fingers 63 between which the guides 52 may extend. Each controller lever 62 is provided with an upper arm 64 connected above the stud 61 to a flexible cord 65 actuated. by a jacquard book 66 and each lever 62 is further connected below the stud 61 to a second flexible connector 67 attached to another jacquard hook 68.
I-Iorn60 is provided with a pair of laterally extending arms 69 and 7 0 which guide a plurality of spring plungers or detents 71, each plunger having a head 72 sliding in arm and receiving the thrust of a compression spring 7 3 the rear portion of which presses against arm 69. Each head is formed as a detent to: enter one or another of a plurality of notches 74 formed in the rear end of a horizontal arm 75 cast integral with the corresponding controller lever 62.
It is to be understood that the cards of the jacquard will be so punched that butv Accordingly, I provide the stand 30 oscillating movement of the corresponding controller lever 62 on stud 61 to move the hooks 49 and 50 with respect to the knife edge 53. The detents or plungers serve to complete any oscillating movement of the controller levers which may have been started but not completed by the jacks 66 and 68. If the loom should stop for instance, before the jacquard has moved the controller levers 62 for half of their throw the 'plungers would act to return said controller levers to theiroriginal position should the weight of the lingoes move the lay backwardly to ore ate a slight reverse motion of the loom. On the other hand, should theloom stop shortly after the controller levers have passed their In order that the rocking movement of the I three-armed levers 40 may have operative connection with the vibrator levers I provide each of the lifter levers 45 with a special form of stud shown more particularly in Fig. 4 and indicated at 76, saidstud having a shank 77 which is received in the forwardly extending end of the corresponding lifter lever 45. The stud is provided with a shoulder 7 8 and a bearing portion 79 which receives the upper end of a wire or other convenient link 80 the lower end of which as indicated in Fig. 1 is connected to one of the vibrator levers 13. A set screw 81 threaded into each lifter lever 45 serves to position the stud 7 6 and affords an adjustment of the upper endof the link 80 from or toward the pivotal support 44 to increase or diminish the throw of said linksv 80.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a simple means for rendering definite the action of lever 62 and thereby controlling the hooks 49 and 50 so that the same will always be properly positioned with respect to the knife edge 53. It will further be seen that each of the lifter levers 45 is provided with means for rendering the same capable of giving more or less throw to the links 80. 3
Having thus described my invention it will be apparent that changes and'modifications may be made therein by those skilled. in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, and I do not wish to be limited to the details herein dis closed but what I claim is:. v Y
