To aZZ whom it may concern.- Be it known that I, CARL SOHOEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York, State of New York, have invented acertain new and useful Improvement in Shuttle-Box-Operating Mechanisms for Looms, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows in side elevation portion of a jacquard-machine and also portion of a shuttle-box-operating mechanism for looms with an embodiment of the present invention, only so much of the jacquardmachine and shuttlebox-operating mechanism being represented as is necessary in order to render clear the character, relations, and purposes of the invention. Fig. 2 shows the same in end elevation looking from the right-handside in Fig. 1. Fig. 3'shows the same in plan.
It is well known that invarious usual constructions of shnttle-box-operating mechanisms for looms the required'shifts or changes in the positions of the shuttle boxes are brought about under the dictation or control of a suitable pattern-surface, the latter having operatively combined therewith one or more hooks, hooked bars, or equivalent devices, these last being connected with the mechanism by which the required movements are transmitted to the shuttle-boxes or occasioned. For codperation with the said hooks or their equivalent's'a suitable moving part or member is provided. When the pattern causes one or more of the hooks or their equivalents to becomeengaged by the said moving part or member, the said hook or hooks or the like will be operated so as to bring about the required changes in the position of the shuttle-boxes. It is customary to employ jacquard-machines in connection with looms on which it is desired to weave figured goods or the like for the operation of the warp-threads. V
In my invention, asihereinafter more fullyexplained, with the aid of the particular embodiment thereofwhich is presented in the accompanying drawings, the hooks or equivalent devices are operatively combined with the usual horizontal needles of the jacquardmachine through the agency of devices which transmit the endwise movement of the said horizontal needles to the said hooks or the like in order to determine when the latter shall become engaged with the moving part about the shifts of the shuttle-boxes. Preferably also in my invention thesaid device which engages with the said hooks or equivalents to move the same, and thus bring about the required shifts or changes of the shuttleboXes, is applied to and moves in unison with the reciprocatory carrier of the cylinder or prism by which the pattern-cards are sup ported and pressed against the ends of the needles. Thereby the jacquard-machine is caused to actuate the shuttle-box-shifting machine, as well as control the operation thereof.
Having reference to the drawings, at A is shown portion of the frame of a jacquard-machine and at A the spring-box, which is located at one side of said machine, it forming a part of the said frame.
At A A are indicated portions of the usual horizontal needles engaging with the usual hooked uprights (not shown) and themselves acted against by the pattern-cards to control the engagement of the said hooked uprights with the usual lifting-grid or knife-frame. (Not shown.)
At A A are indicated the springs contained in the spring-box and acting in well-known manner to hold the needles pressed lengthwise into their normal position.
The pattern-cards and the prism or cylinder over which the pattern-cards pass and by means of which said pattern-cards are presented against the ends of the needles are not shown; but at A is shown portion of one ofthe siderods of the carrier in which the said prism or cylinder is mounted. The said carrier is reciprocated horizontally in wellknown manner in practice, the side rods respectively moving longitudinally in guides on the frame A, one of the said guides being represented at A For the actuation of the carrier power is applied to collars on said side rods, one such collar being shown at A The parts which have thus far been referred to, their operating connections and other accessories, and the mode of operation may all boas preferred or as heretofore.
At B B are shown levers pertaining to the or member whereby they are moved to bring ICO shuttle-box-shifting machanism of a loom. The said levers are mounted side by side upon a stud 13, carried by a stand B that is attached to one of the sides of the frame A of the jacquard-machine.
At B is a collar, also mounted on the stud B and provided with a stop-finger B, projecting behind the lower arms of levers B B to limit the descent of such arms, and thereby fix the normal position of said levers. The position of the said stop-finger may be adjusted to correspondingly adjust the normal position of the levers B B by rotating the collar B upon the stud b, after which the collar and stopmay be secured in position by means of a suitable clamping-screw B The shuttle-boxes are not shown, nor are the parts of their operating connections more immediately adjacent the same, with which the levers B B are connected. The precise character and construction of the said operating connections and the precise manner and mode of combining and connecting the levers B B therewith are not material to the invention, and all of these may be varied in many 'respects. There are various types of shuttle-box-operating mechanisms well known in the art, and the manner of applying and using, the features which have thus far been described in connection with any approved and suitable mechanism will be apparent without detailed explanation to those who are skilled in the art.
As already stated, the required action of the sh uttle-box-shifting mechanism of a loom is in practice customarily brought about through the employment of hooks or equivalent devices connected with the said mechanism and engaged, under the control of pattern devices, by a moving part or member, by means of which movement is transmitted through the hook or equivalent device to the connected portion or portions of the shuttlebox-shifting mechanism, and the said shifting mechanism is thereby made operative to produce the required change in position of the shuttle-boxes. Hooks for the purpose are shown in the drawings at C C, and they are pivoted, respectively, to the upper arms of levers B B upon studs 0 C, projecting from the said levers. The moving part with which the said hooks are caused to become engaged for the purpose of producing, the required action of the shuttle-box-shifting mechanism is constituted, in accordance with one feature of the present invention, by a blade D, projecting from the collar A on the side rod A As the carrier for the patterncylinder or prism moves to carry the latter outward from the adjacent ends of the needles A A the blade D moves therewith in a direction to engage with the hooks if the latter or either thereof should occupya position in its path and move the same lengthwise, so as to occasion the predetermined action ofthe shuttle-box-shifting mechanism.
The means of transmitting the endwise movements of the horizontal needles A A of the jacquard-machine to the hooks O C, so as to place the said hooks under the control of the said needles, and the usual patterncards of the jacquard-machine may vary more or less in practice. In the illustrated embodiment of the invention a stand or bracket E is attached to the spring-box A, this stand or bracket having a depending arm carrying a vertical stud E, on which are mounted horizontal levers F F. One arm of each lever F extends transversely of the jacquardmachine, its free extremity standing in line with the adjacent end or ends of one or more of the horizontal needles A A in such position that when the said end or ends is or are in a projected position the said arm is acted upon thereby and the lever is caused to occupy a corresponding position. Each lever F is connected by a wire G with a rocker, which engages with a corresponding one of the hooks 0. Each rocker comprises in the present instance a small rock shaft H, mounted in bearings which are provided in upwardly-extending arms B B of the stand or bracket B a depending arm H, with which one extremity of the corresponding wire G is connected, and a horizontal arm H which extends under the corresponding hook C and normally supports the same. When the end of a needle coacting with a lever F occupies a projected position, the rocker connected with said lever is operated to raise the corresponding hook 0 above the path of movement of the said reciprocating engaging device D. W'hen said needle is permitted to move inward, the corresponding lever F and rocker are permitted to move under the influence of the tension-spring K, which is con nected with the horizontal arm of the rocker, so as to lower the hook into the path of the said device D, which will enable the latter to engage with the hook and move it endwise.
The operation of the described embodiment of the invention will be obvious-that is to say, as the batten is swung inward, so as to present a pattern-card against the ends of the needles, should blank or unperforated portions of such card be presented to the needles acting in connection withthe levers F F the said needles will be pressed endwise by the said portion of the card and will turn the levers F F, thereby transmitting movement to the corresponding rockers H H and lifting the hooks 0 above the path of movement of the blade or other engaging device D, carried by the side rod A. Should a hole in the pattern-card be presented to the end of one of the needles coacting with the levers F F, the said needle will not be moved endwise by the inward movement of the batten, and consequently the hook O, which is controlled by the said needle and its connections, will re- 'main in its depressed position in readiness to be engaged by blade D vice carried by side rod or other engaging de- A. The said blade or other engaging device D in its outward movement will engage with such hook, drawing the same lengthwise and turning the cor responding lever B, so as to bring about the required movement of the connected parts pertaining to the shuttle-box motion and occasion thereby the desired shift of the shut-- tle-boxes.
In the case of certain looms the lift of the griff is not timed in proper unison with the time for the movement of the shuttle-boxes. This renders it inconvenient or impracticable to employ in such looms indicating devices for the shnttle-box-operating mechanism which are operatively connected with the jacquard-machine and actuated through the upward movement oflthe said uprights, which is occasioned by the engagement of the same with the griff in the rising movement of the latter. In such looms the outward movement of the batten for'the pattern-cards has the proper timing, and this enables my invention to be utilized to advantage in connection with such looms.
I claim as my invention- 1. As an improvement in shuttle-box-operating mechanism for looms, in combination, a hook connected with the mechanism for occasioning shifting movements of the shuttleboXes, a moving hook-engaging device to cooperate with the said hook, the horizontal needles of a jacquard-machine, and devices operated by the said needles and transmitting the endwise' movement of the latter to the said hook, thereby controlling the engagement of the said hook by the said hook-engaging device, substantially as described.
".2. As an improvement in shuttle-boX-operating mechanism for looms, in combination, a hook connected with the mechanism for 00- casioning shifting movements of the shuttleboxes, the reciprocatory carrier for the prism by which the pattern-cards of a jacquardmachine are presented to the ends of the horizontal needles of the said machine, a hookengaging device with which the said carrier is provided to cooperate with the said hook, the said needles, and devices operated by the said needles and controlling the engagement of the said hook by the hook-engaging device with which the carrier is provided, substantially as described.
3. As an improvement in shnttle-box-operating mechanism for looms, in combination, a series of hooks connected with the mechanism for occasioning shifting movements of the shuttlmboxes, a moving hook-engaging device to cooperate with the said books, the horizontal needles of a jacquard-machine, and devices operated by the said needles and transmitting the endwise movement of the latter to the said hooks, therebycontrolling the engagement ofthe respective hooks by the said hook-engaging device, substantially as described. 4:. As an improvement in shuttle-box-operating mechanism for looms, in combination, the hooks connected with the mechanism for occasioning shifting movements of the shuttle-boxes, the reciprocatory carrier for the prism by which the pattern-cards of a jacguard-machine are presented to the ends of the horizontal needles of the said machine, a hook-en gaging device with which the said carrier is provided, the said needles, and devices operated by said needles and controlling the engagement of the said hooks by the said hook-engaging device with which the prismcarrier is provided, substantially as described.
5. As an improvement in shuttle-box-operating mechanism for looms, in combination, a hook connected with the mechanism for occasioning shifting movements of the shuttleboxes, the reciprocatory carrier for the prism by which the pattern-cards of a jacquard-machine are presented to the ends of the horizontal needles of the said machine, a hook-engaging device with which the said carrier is provided to cooperate with the said hook, the said needles, a lever operated by the needles, and a rocker operatively connected with the said lever and engaging the hook, whereby the engagement of the latter by the hook-engaging device with which the carrier is provided is controlled, substantially as described,
6. As an improvement in shuttle-box-operating mechanism for looms, in combination, the reciprocatory carrier for the prism by which the pattern-cards of a jacquard-machine are presented to the ends of the horizontal needles of the said machine, a hook-engag' ing device with which said carrier is provided, the said needles, the spring-box for the said needles, the lovers pivotally mounted upon the spring-box and actuated by the rear ends of the needles, the rock-shafts operated by the said levers, and the hooks controlled by said rock-shafts as to their engagement by the hook-engaging device with which the prism carrier is provided, and connected with the mechanism for occasioning shifting move- ICC ments of the shuttle-boxes, substantially as described.
7. As an improvement in shuttle-box-operating mechanism for looms, in combination, a hook having connections for transmitting movement to the shuttle-boxes, a reciprocatory device engaging with the said hook to impart movement to the same, needles of a jacquard-machine, a lever operated by said needles, and a rocker connected with said lever and having an arm by which the position of the hookis controlled, substantially as described.
