Description

A. P. PAINE NEEDLE POSITIONING MEANS FOR AXMINSTER LOOMS Filed May 9, 1925 Patented Dec. 1, 1925 PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR P. IPAINE, OF WORCESTER,MASSACHUSETTS ASSIGNOR TO CROMPTON & KNOWLES LOOM- WORKS, OF WORCESTER, IVIASSAGHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
4 NEEDLE-POSITIONING Means FOR AXMINSTER LGQMS.
Application filed May 9, 1925. Serial No. 29,203.
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR P. PAINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vorcester, in the county of lVorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Needle-Positioning Means for Axminstcr Looms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in needle motions for Axminster looms where the needle is actuated by a rope or flexible cord which is subject to such stretching as results'in inaccurate placingof the needle. It is the principal object of my invention to provide means for positively positioning the needle to the end that it may always occupy the same position with respect to the shed and the selvage forming shuttle on the opposite end of the loom.
It is a further object of my invention to provide a needle positioning device which shall act first as a check to the motion of the needle and immediately thereafter to position the needle to overcome the effects of rebounding due to the checking.
A segment gear is usually'employed to drive the drum around which the rope is wound, and it is a more particular object of my invention to use the latter part of the stroke of the segment to operate the positioner for the needle, movement of the needle in either direction being prevented until the segment moves to reverse the direction of the needle.
With these and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and set forth in the. claims.
In the accompanying drawings wherein I have shown one embodiment of my invention,
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a portion of a loom having my invention applied thereto and showing the same in position to check the needle,
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing the parts in the position they assume at the end of the stroke of the needle and the driving segment therefor,
Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line B-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 1 is a detail top plan view looking in the direction of arrow 1, Fig. 1, and
Fig. 5 is an enlarged vertical section on line 5--5 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings it will be seen that I have provided an end frame 10 secured in any approved manner to an. Axi'ninster loom not shown and having mounted thereon a stand 11 on which is mounted a needle rail 12. As shown more particularly in Fig. 5-said rail is provided with a dove-tail groove 13 in which is slidably mounted a correspondingly formed block 14 the rear end of which has secured thereto in any. approved manner an actuating cord or rope 15. Secured to and movable with the block 14; is the filling needle indicated at 16.
Iivotally mounted with respect to the frame 10 by means not shown is a segn'ienl; 17 driven by a connector 18 and meshing with a pinion 19 which is secured to drum 9.0 and moves therewith about shaft 21. The cord 1.5 is secured to and wrapped around the drum 20 and as the segment 17' is reciprocated by the link 18 theblock 14. moves back and forth in the groove 13 to move the needle 16 into and out of the shed. The matter thus far described is of common construction and forms no part of my invention.
In carrying out my improvements I secure a stand 28 to the end frame 10 and mount thereon for pivotal motion a shaft 29 having fastened thereto levers 30. and 31, the latter being provided with an adjusted screw 32 positioned for engagement with the segmentv 17. A'spring interposed between lever 30' and stand 11 normally holds said lever in the position shown in Fig. 1 against fixed stop screw 34. Pivotally mounted as at 35 on the needle rail 12 is a second lever 36 having a pin and slot connection 37 with the lever 30. Said lever 36 has a pair of spaced arms 38 and 39, respectively, the arm 38 normally positioned to receive the impact of a lug 40 extending rearwardly from the block 14 as shown in Fig. 5 and the arm 39 normally being below the path. of said 111 In operation as the needle approaches the inner end of its stroke lug 40 engages arm 38 and through the pin and slot connection 37 moves the levers 30. 31. and 36 from the normal position shown in Fig. 1 to the posi tion shown in Fig. 2 against the action of spring 33. As the segment 17 nears the end of its stroke it engages screw 32, over-powers spring 33, and moves the levers to give arm 39 an additional positive motion in the direction in which the needle is traveling, causing said arm to engage lug a and move the block 1% and needle to the left as shown in Fig. 1. A boss 41 on the needle rail has mounted therein stop screw 12 which engages a lug 43 on the block let to accurately position said block as the same is moved by arm 39. Slight inaccuracies in the set ting ot' screws 32 ant are compensated for by stretching oi the rope 15. As the segment 17 starts on its return movement the spring 33 will restore the parts to the position shown in Fig. 1.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided means for first checking the needle and then accurately positioning the same positively against the action of the checking means. It will also be seen that the checking and positioning means constitute a. lock for the block preventing motion thereof in either direction.
Having thus described my invention it will be apparent that changes and modifications may be made therein by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, and I do notwish to be limited to the details herein disclosed but what I claim is:
1. In a needle motion for Axminster looms comprising a needle and a block movable therewith, means to check the motion of the needle as the latter, nears the end of its stroke and means to thereafter positively position the needle.
2. In a needle motion for Axminster looms comprising a needle and a block movable therewith, yielding means normally in the path of the block and yielding at the end of the stroke of the needle to check the latter, and means to thereafter position said needle positively.
stroke, and positive connections from the driving mechanism acting against the yield ing means to positively position the needle at the end 01 its stroke.
at. In a needle motion for Axminster looms comprising a needle and a block movable therewith, driving mechanism for the block and needle, yielding means to check the needle as the latter nears the end of its stroke, and positive connections "ti-om the driving mechanism to positively position the needle at the end of its stroke.
5. In a needle motion for Axminster looms comprising a needle and a bloc}. movable therewith, a lever having an arm normally in the path of the block, and a second arm on the lever normally out of the path ot the block, yielding means to resist movement of the first named arm under influence ot the block to check the latter, and positive means to move the second named arm into said levers in normal position to arrest the motion of the block, the segment engaging one of said levers .at the end of the stroke thereot to move the same aga nst the action ,of theyielding means to positively position the block.
8. In a needle motion for Axminster looms, av movableneedle, meansto checkthe motion of the needle as the same approaches the end of the stroke thereof, and means to remove the checking of said needle immediatelybefore the needle reaches the extreme end of the stroke thereof to permit said needle to move uninterrnpted to the end of its stroke.
'In testimony whereof I have hereunto al- .tixed my signature.
