v E. E. CLARK M FOR AXMINSTER LOOMS TUBE FEEDING CHAIN MECHANIS Filed June 30 1922 lit) Patented Oct. 30, 1923.
' arass EVERETT E. CLARK, OE WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS; AssIeiI R To oRoMr'roN & KNOWLES LOOM wORKs, A CORPORATION O MASSACHUSETTS. I
TUBE FEEDING CHAIN MECHANISM EOE AXMINSTEB LOOMS. 1
Application filed June so, 1922. Serial No. 571,862;
T0 (ZZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, EVERETT E. CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State otMassachusetts, have invented a new and useful Tube Feeding Chain Mechanism for Axminister Looms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to chain feedingmechanism for looms of the Moquette type in which the numerous tuft yarns for each pick of the fabric are assembled on a separate yarn spool and are presented between'the warp threads by a corresponding number of yarn tubes. These yarn tubes are fixed to a. tube frame which also supports the yarn spool and a number of these tube frames and spools are assembled to form a pattern chain of greater or less length and often of very considerable weight. 7
My invention relates to improvements in the mechanism for intermittently advancing such a pattern chain and particularly to means for manually controlling and re versing the feed thereof.
My invention further relates to arrangements and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
A preferred form of the invention is shown in the drawings, in which- Fig. 1 is a front elevation of parts of a loom frame having my invention applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional side elevation taken along the line 3-3 in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4c is a detail side elevation looking in the direction of the arrow t in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings. I have indicated parts of a loom frame 10 and an upper cross girt 11. A driving shaft 12 for the tube chain (not shown) is supported in bearings on the frame 10 and is intermittently advanced in either direction by the pawl and ratchet mechanism shown in detail in Fig. 3.
' This mechanism comprises a. pair of ratchet wheels fixed to the shaft 12 and having ratchet teeth facing in opposed directions. A pair of feed pawls 13 and 14 are regularly moved angularly about the axis of the shaft 12 by links 15 which connect the feed pawl supports 16 with a bell crank 17 actuated 'by a cam .1 18 shaft 19. Y Y
on the loomcam A guard plate or shield 20 is mounted'on a fixed pivot 21 and engages studs 22 in the pawls 13' and 14. The guard plate 20 is movable upward and downwardfrom the midposition shown in Fig. 3 and when in its upward position permits the feed pawl 14: to
become operative while the pawl 13' is held inoperative. Similarly when in its lower position the pawl 13' is operative and'the pawl 14: is inoperative.
The parts thus far selves form no part of my present invention and for a more complete disclosure thereof reference is made to the copending' application of E. H. Ryon, Serial No. 560,211, filed May 11; 1922.
described in them- The guard plate or shield 20 is connected it by a link'24 to a reversing arm 25 fixed on a cross rod or shaft 26. This shatt'is supported in bearings on the upper cross girt 11 and is provided with hand levers 27 and 28 secured to the opposite endst-hereof. The
lever 28 has an upward extension 29 on which a latch 30 is pivoted at 31. This latch co-operates with a notched locking plate 32 fixed to the cross girt 11.
A release lever 33 is pivoed at 3; to the hand lever 28 and has a pin and slot connection at 35 with the latch 30. A spring 36 normally holds the latch 30 in engagement with the notches of the lock plate 32. A second release lever 38 is pivoted at 39 on the hand lever 27 and is connected by a link 10 to the latch 30.
With the mechanism thus described the loom operator is able to control the pattern chain feed from either side of the loom. For this purpose it he is at the right side of the loo-m he grasps the lower ends of the hand lever 27 and the release lever 38, pressing them toward each other. This action is effective through the link 40 to withdraw the latch 30 from the notches in the plate 32, after which the. release cross rod 26 may be turned by the hand lever 27 to raise or The mechanism described forms a very convenient and accessible means of reversing or stopping the feed of the pattern chain at any desired point and from either side of the loom.
Having thus described my invention and the advantages thereof, I do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed other wise than as set forth in the claims but What I claim is za 1. A tube chain feeding mechanism for an Axminster carpet loom comprising a feed shaft, means to angularly advance said shaft intermittently in either direction, reversing mechanism for said means including a pivotally mounted reversing arm, a latch for said arm, a release lever mounted. on said arm, and connections from said lever to said latch, whereby said latch may be rel-eased.
2. A tube chain feeding mechanism for an Axminster carpet loom comprising a feed shaft, means to angularly advance said shaft intermittently in either direction, reversing mechanism for said means including a shaft, a reversing arm fixed to said shaft and having an extension beyond said shaft, a latch mounted on said extension, and a release lever for said latch mounted on said arm and movable therewith, said release lever having an additional movement independent of said arm to release said latch.
3. A tube chain feeding mechanism for an Axminster carpet loom comprising a feed shaft, means to angularly advance said shaft intermittently in either direction, reversing mechanism for said means including a shaft,
a reversing arm on said shaft, a latch for said shaft, a notched plate fixed to said 100111 and co-operating With said latch, a spring to engage said latch With said plate, and a release lever mounted on and movable With said reversing arm and connected to release said latch.
4. A tube'chain feeding mechanism for an Axminster carpet loom comprising a feed shaft, means to angularly advance said shaft intermittent-l in either direction reversin b mechanism for said means extending transversely reversing arm at each latch for said including a shaft across said m, at end of said shaft, a shaft pivotally mounted on an extension of one of said reversing arms, and
a lever on each arm connected to release said latch, the handle portions of each associated reversing arm and release lever being so positioned that they may be simultaneously grasped and easily moved by the hand of the operator.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature.
EVERETT E. CLARK.
