The present invention relatesto an im provement in filling feeler mechanisms for looms. 2
In some forms of filling feeler mechanisms, a controller engages a portion of the shuttle. in the operation of the loom this causes wear upon the 2 the more rapid consumption of shuttles. In other forms of filling feeler mechanisms a controller engages the surface of the bobbin spring. Now, the bobbin s rings bear slightly difierent positions in di erent shuttles, and this causes a different action of the feeler in the different shuttles. In other forms of filling feeler mechanisms, a controller contacts with the bobbin, and this is objectionable not .only by reason of the wear on theibobbin, but byreason of the fact that, the bobbin is not alwaysin precisely the same position ,owing to slight difierences/iif the positions of the bobbin springs "In other forms of fillingv feeler mechanlsms a special form of front boxplate was required to. be used in order to adapt the loom for use with the feeler mechanisms. The illustrated embodiment of the invention is described as follows: The loom to which this filling feeler mechanism is applied may be of any usual or preferred construction in either a plain loom or a weft replenishing loom. if applied to a plain loom, the feeler mechanism operates to 'sto the loom upon critical exhaustion of the filling in the shuttle; and if applied to a weft replenishing loom, the feeler mechanism operates to bring about the insertion in the shuttle of a fresh supply of filling upon critical exhaustion, The portion of the loom shown in the drawing comprises a lay 1, a. breast beam 2, a'weft hammer 3, a shuttle box 4, a change shaft or stop shaft 5, achange or stop lever 6, all of which maybe of the usual or any preferred construction, A knock-01f bracket 10 attached to the breast beam projects 7 outwardly from the loom frame and carriesu' on its end a filling feeler 11, substantially 0 the form shown in the Northrop Patent No. 1,249,280. 'The filling feeler is connected by means of a link 12 with the latch 13 pivoted at 14 upon the side of the controller arm 15, which is pivoted at 16 to the change or stop lever 6. The rear end of the controller arm 15 is turned down and rests upon the controller supporting plate 17 attached to thebreast beam of the loom, upon the u per surface of which it is adapted to slide back and forth. The controller arm 15 is provided with a slot 20 which receives the controller stud '21. This Y stud 21 is screwed into a hole in the forward end of the controller 22. The controller is normally held inrearward position by the bspring 23, which has its rear end attached to a pm 24 supported by the plate 25,'secured to the controller plate 17. The rear end of the controller is adapted to ,en tion 30 on the rear box late 0 t e lay. On every other beat of the ay, the controller is pushed forwardly in the slot in the controller arm, and upon: each retreat of the lay following such forward movement of'the cona a pro ec troller, it moves backward again under the influence of the springs 23. The controller latch 13 is provided with a downwardly extended lug 31 which is engaged by the controller stud 21 upon its rearward movement, thereby turning the latch 13 to'the position shownin Fig. 1, and moving the latch out of .strongenough for this purpose.
32. The weft hammersupports the controller, the latter resting upon a surface formed on the weft hammer. The weft hammer moves forward and lifts the controller b engaging the cam surface on the contro ler bunter, so that the controller is above the rojection 30 on the box when the shuttle is Boxed on the right-hand side of the loom. But the weft hammer permits the controller to occupy theposition shown in Fig. 2 when the shuttle is boxed at the left-hand side of the loom, as shown in Fig. 1, so thatthe' feeler is ineffective to cause weft replenishment or stoppage of the loom when the shutllale is boxed at the right-hand side of'the. 00m.
The operation of the filling feeler mechanism is as follows: When critlcal exhaustion of the filling is reached, the spring 33 tends to swing the latch 13 in a direction to cause the feeler to move toward the butt of the bobbin, and the tendency of the feeler so to move not being resisted by the presence of yarn on the bobbin, it swings with the latch,

filling feeler mechanism comprising a feeler, a latch, connections between the feeler and latch, means tending to move the feeler to cause its filling feeling end to move toward the butt of a bobbin in the shuttle, a controller for preventing such movement of the feeler, the shuttle box being provided with a part ada ted to engage the controller, and thereby re ease the latch and feeler when the shuttle is boxed on the filling feeler side of the loom. l
2. A loom having, in combination, a la adapted to carry a shuttle, a box, a 'we hammer, a filling feeler having a filling feeling end adapted to engage the filling on' a bobbin in the shuttle, a latch, connections between the latch and the feeler, said latch having a part adapted tobe engaged when in operative position by the weft hammer, a controller having provision for holding the latch in inoperative position, means for moving the latch intooperative position when ghe controller is actuated to release the latch ever.
3. A filling feeler mechanism for looms having, in combination, a filling feeler, a latch. connections between the latch and filling feeler, a weft hammer, means'tending to move the latch in a direction to present a portion to the action of the weft hammer,
a controller having an end adapted to be struck by the lay, and a portion adapted to control the release of the latch, said controller having a cam surface which rests upon the weft hammer, wherebv, on alter nate beats of the lav. the controller is lifted out of the range action of the lay.
4. A filling ,feeler mechanism for looms having, in combination,- a filling feeler, a latch. a wefthammer, a controller for controlling the operation of the latch, a controller actuating member on a moving part of the loom, said controller and weft hammer having cooperating cam surfaces adapted to move the controller so as to thereby remove the controller from the field of action of its actuating member.
