' My invention relatesto means for adjustably suspending the back of a hammock or the like. i I
In accordance with my invention, means are provided to suspend the back of a hamniock or the like so that it may automatically adjust itself to any desired angular position, thereby 'conformingto the curvature of thebody. The suspending means are preferably arranged at the ends of the back, near its central longitudinal axis and this permits of the simultaneous adjustment of the top and bottom of the back, which is effected without the use of bolts, nuts, screws or springs. Further, the construction is such that the back is automatically locked in the normal upright position, and when shifted to a selected inclined position, automatically releases itself, when pressure is removed therefrom, and returns to the normal upright position, thereby producing both comfortand safety. The construction is such that the back may be readily separated from the frame of the hammock without the use of nuts, bolts, screws, etc.
Other objects and advantages of the in vention will be apparent during the course of the following description. 7
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one end of a hammock embodying my invention,
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the stud element of the hinge, I
Figure 3 is a plan View of the same,
Figure 4: is a transverse vertical section on line 4-4 of Figure 1, and,
Figure 5 is a plan view of the'socket element. 1 i
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration, is shown a preferred em bodiment of my invention. the numeral designates the bottom of a hammock, at each end of which is secured the arm frame 11, including uprights 12. This arm frame is suspended by chains 13 or the like. The numeral 14 designates the back, including transverse end strips or bars 15, as shown.
My adjustable supporting means for the back embodies a stud element 16, including by bolts 18 or the like.
an attaching body portion 17, adapted to be rigidly secured to the transverse strip 15, The outer end of ring movement of the back.
back, no screws,
my invention or the body portidn 17 the form or a flat face 19. Preferably formed integral with this flat face is a headed stud, embodying a head 20 and' cylindrica'l shank 21, producing an annular groove 22, between the head 20 and the face 19.
The bodyp'orti'o'n l7 provided adjacent to the shank 21 with a forward transversely curved'ca1nface22. I The companion ocketf le entembodies an Ii-sus ect body portion 23, to straddle the edge of the upright 12 and to be attached thereto by bolts 24, or the like. Extending rearwardly from this L-shaped body 'portion, and preferably formed integral therewith, is a straight ear 25, having a U-shaped opening 26, which is opened at the top. This opening produces the socket.
in the use of the device, it being understood, of course,- that there are two of'the suspending devices employed at the opposite ends of the back, the headed stud is inserted within the openings 26 of the socketelement. This brings the forward curved cam face 22 into contact with the part 23 carried by the rear edge of the arm frame upright 12. This headed stud is preferably arranged at the central longitudinal axis of the back. When the occupant inclines upon the back, the back will be free to turn upon the studs, as pivots, and hence will automatically adjust itself to any desired angular position, to conform to the contour of the back. Further, the curved cam face 22 works against the part 23 of the arm and prevents the back from lurching too suddenly into the adjusted a lock to prevent the back from going too far backward or forward. It returns the back to the normal vertical position when pressure is removed therefrom. The cam face 22 acting upon the upright 12 tends to elevate the back 14, and this opposes the swing- It is obvious that the back may be readily separated from the arm frames. In the manipulation of the nuts or bolts are employed.
It is to be understood 'that the form of my invention, herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of claims.
position, and acts as the scope of the subjoined Having thus described my invention, I
. 1. The combination with the back and arm toward the forward side of the back and a stud, the cam'face being eccentric with relation to the stud, a co-actingsocket member secured to the arm frame and having an opening to receive thestudythe cam face being arranged to engage with a part carried by the arm frame.
2. A' hinge for adjustably connecting the back and arm frame of a hammock comprising a member secured to the back and provided with a forward cam face and having a headed stud, the cam face being eccentric withrespect to the headed. stud, a socket member secured to the arm frame and having a substantially vertical opening which is "open at its top and adapted for the reception of the headed stud, the cam face being arranged to engage with a part carried by the arm frame.
3. A hinge for adjustably detachably connecting the back and arm frame of a hammo'c comprising a member secured to the back at one end thereof and extending substantially horizontally, said member bein provided with a substantially horizonta pivot stud and'also having a generally upstanding curved cam face upon its forward side'which is eccentric with relation to the stud, said cam face extending above and below the stud for substantial distances, and a socket member secured to the arm frame and embodying a substantially vertical plate to contact with the cam face and also having a substantially vertical opening to receive the stud.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
SAMUEL HEYMAN.
