Our invention relates to golf clubs, and particularly to the covering forthe upper end of the golf club shaft.
It is our object to provide the. hand end of the golf club shaft completely enclosed with leather.
It is our object to provide a golf club handle with an enclosing, one-piece leather cap whipped upon the leather cover. of the handle.
Referring to the drawings; Figure 1 is a side elevation of .the handle; Figure 2 is a section on the line 2 2 thereof; Figure 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 is the wooden handle upon which is wound a plurality of layers of resilient fabric 2-. Upon this fabric layer is a spirally wound strip of leather 3. Over the end of the fabric and the leather strip 3 and the end'of the wooden handle 1 is mounted a one-piece leather cap consisting of an end portion 4 and a skirt portion 5 having a tapered marginal edge 6 on which is whipped a thread 7 which is wound around the tapered edge to attach with a smooth joint the one-piece cap to the handle.
It is thus possible to attach a smooth onepiece leather cap by a smooth joint to the leather handle providing a handle which will not abrade the hands of the user. and which will, at the same time, provide a neat and decorative appearance adapted to exclude moisture from getting in between the leather and fabric and the wooden handle. It will be understood that we desire to attaching. means consisting of a whipped thread binding the free margin of the cupshaped cap on the leather covering of the shaft.
2. In a golf club handle, a shaft, a resilient fabric wound on saidshaft, a spirally wound leather cover on the handle of said shaft, a one-piece leather cap mounted as a cap over the end of said shaft and its cover, anda thread whipped aroundthe free edge ofsaid cap'to bindit on said shaft and its leather cover, the said cap having a tapered margin.
3. In a golf club handle, a shaft, a resilient fabric wound on said shaft, a spirally wound-leather cover on the handle of said shaft, a one-piece leather capmounte'd as a cap overthe-end of said shaft and its cover,
and a thread whipped around the free edge of said cap to bind it on said shaft and its leather cover,'said cap havinga tapered margin where the whipping is mounted in order to provide a tapering surface from the cap to the surface of the handle.
