Description
I T. a. ARNOLD. Harvester-CutterQ Patented June 29,1875.
Hlllllll] l I I I! I l l 1 WITNESSES:
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS E. ARNOLD, OF KNOXBOROUGH, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARVESTER-CUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,958, dated J une 29, 1875; application filed March 29, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THoMAs R. ARNOLD, of Knoxborough P. 0., in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mode of Fastening Gutter-Bars, of which the following is a specification:
The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a top view of a portion of a cutter-bar having knives attached according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of Fig. 1, taken on the line 00 00.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the cutter-bar. F is the clamping-bar over the knives. E represents the knives. In the inner or back portion of the cutter-bar is made a groove, 0, and on the side of the knives is made a flange or lip, D. This flange extends entirely across the back of the knife, but it may be made in sections of two or more for each knife. This flange restsin the groove, as seen in Fig. 2, while the knife rests flat on the face of the cutter-bar. The knives are brought in contact with each other on the front of the cutter-bar, as seen at H. The back of the knives Test against the shoulder G of the cutter-bar, so that the knives are kept rigidly in place. The clamping-bar F is attached to cutter-bar with screws which pass between each pair of knives. The corners of the knives, having corresponding pieces cut out of each corner, form rearwardly-opening spaces 0 e on each corner edge of the shank, or being clipped to allow the screw to pass between, as seen in dotted lines in Fig. 1. By loosening these screws the knives may readily'be removed and replaced.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of grooved knife bar, knives, shouldered at the rear edge and re cessed at the rear corners, the clamping-bar, and the fastening-screws, as and for the purpose specified.
THOMAS R. ARNOLD. Witnesses:
T. B. Mosnnn, ALEX. F. RoBERTs.
