WILLIAM B. SWALLOW, OF FLEMINGTON, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR 'OF ONE- THIRD HIS RIGHT TO ANDREW T. GONNET, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN FASTENERS FOR THE MEETING-RAILS OF SASHES. V
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,884, dated June 22, 1875 application filed May 19, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM B. SWALLOW, of Flemington, in the county of Hunterdon and in the State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash- Locks and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanyin g drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention relates to a device which is attached to the meeting-rails of a window-sash; and it consists in ,the combination of two plates, made wedge-shaped,and provided with dovetailed projections and recesses; also, in the combination, with said plates, of a shaft with handle and arm andian inclined slot in one plate, all as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed. to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my sashlock separated. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of that part which is on the upper sash. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the lock. Fig. 4 represents the device as applied to the meeting-rails of a window-sash.
My sash-lock is composed of two plates or castings, A and B, secured respectively in the meeting-rails of the lower and upper sashes. The plate A is wedge-shaped at each end, as shown at a. a, the inner edges of said wedgeshaped parts being inclined. In the center of the plate A is a part, a, of the same thickness as the upper part of the plate, and which is out off at its lower end, as shown. This part a has inclined sides, making the lower end narrower than the upper, and said inclined sides are beveled inward, forming, as it were, a dovetailed Wedge, with groove a on each side between it and the wedge parts a. Through the center of the plate A passes a vertical shaft, (1, with crank or handle D on its upper end, and a short arm, i, secured on wedge-shaped recess, corresponding with the part a for the same to enter into, and leaving a dovetailed wedge part, W, on each side thereof. In the recess b is made a slot,
x, as shown.
In closing the window, whether the lower sash is being lowered or the upper sash raised, the two plates A and B interlock into each other, forming a tight joint, and preventing any rattling of the sash. By means of the handle I) the shaft at is then turned so as to throw the arm 1' into the slot as in the plate B, thereby locking the sashes together, and preventing anybody from opening the window from the outside.
The end of the slot as, where the arm 11 first enters, is inclined so that, by bringing the arm straight outward, it will bind and lock the parts more firmly together.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination of the plate A, formed with the wedge-shaped parts a a, center dovetailed wedge a and grooves a? a and the plate B, formed with the wedgeshaped parts b 1), center dovetailed recess b, and wedges 1) b substantially as and for the purposes here in set forth.
2. In combination with the plates A and B, constructed as herein described, the shaft cl with handle D, and arm t, and the inclined slot :0 inthe plate B, as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that Iclaim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 22d day of April, 1875.
WILLIAM B. SWALLOW. t. s]
