Description

UNITED STATES PEL AG 'WERNI, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMPOUNDS FOR PRESERVING WOOD.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,786, dated June 22, 1875; application filed November 9, 1874. i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PELAG WERNI, of the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and usefnl Improvement in Preserving or Protecting l/Vood and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description of the nature thereof, sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand, make, and use the same.
My invention consists in treating wood in such a manner that it shall be proof against fire, rot, vermin, 850.; and in carrying out the same I proceed as follows:
I take one pound of prussiate of potash, one-half pound of sulphate of zinc, two pounds of glue. The prussiate of potash is dissolved in four gallons of Water, the glue in one gallon of water, and the sulphate of zinc in one quart of water. When the articles are thoroughly dissolved they are united, and the compound well boiled.- The wood is now placed in said compound, and boiled therein for about twenty-four hours.
The glue acts as a vehicle for conveying the compound into the pores of the wood. The prussiate of potash and sulphate of zinc are preservative and non-inflammable in their nature, whereby it is evident that wood'incased therein or saturated therewith will be pre- Vented from burning, will not rot in water or from dampness or moisture, andis proof against pose set forth.
PELAG WERNI.
