Description
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Luna s. TEAGHMAN, OF LINCOLN, NEBRASKA.
WOOD-PRESERVING COMPOSITION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 277,810, dated May 15, 1 883. Application filed February 13, 1883. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LUKE N. TEACHMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lincoln, in the county of Lancaster and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Compositions for Pre serving Wood; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in compositions for preserving wood, it being particularly applicable to such material when used in a damp locality or under ground and the invention consists of one part zinc sulphate, three parts soda hyposulphite, one part sulphate of copper, and one part chlorate of potash, combined by first pulverizing and mixing together in the proportions named, and applied to the wood in the usual manner, by first boring a hole therein and filling the cavity with the mixture, after which the hole is plugged up. After the wood has been thus treated, the composition, by the natural chemical action going on in the said wood, percolates through and fills the-pores, thereby preventing the souring and fermentation of the substances contained therein, this souring and fermentation being the cause of decay.
When applied to fence-posts or other wood partially embedded in the ground the composition is introduced just above the ground-line, in the manner before described, the dampness of the woodunder treatment causing the composition to dissolve and fill the pores of the wood and thus arrest fermentation, which would result'from such dampness, and thereby prevent decay.
Wood treated with this composition in the manner and proportions named willlast an indefinite length of time; and in the use of wood for fence or other posts, or for sills, &c.,'where the material is exposed to the damp, such treatment will be found very desirable in not only preventing decay, but in saving the necessary repairs and renewal from time to time of such posts, sills, 85c.
V The composition, being simple and inexpensive in its parts, is easily prepared and readily applied, and can be put up and sold upon the market in a neat and desirable manner at a comparatively small cost.
Having now fully described myinvention, what I elaimas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A wood-preservin gcomposi tiou consisting of zinc sulphate, soda hyposulphite, sulphateot' copper, and chlorate of potash, in substantially the proportions named, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have' hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
LUKE" N. TEAOHMAN.
