IMPROVEMENT IN l-"OCT-POWER LASTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,722, dated J une 2.2, 1875; application filed J une 7, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that Lhnnnnnron J. DAVIS, of Newport, inthe county of Orleans and State of Vermont, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Foot-Power Laster; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a side view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view-of the same.
This invention relates to a device of simple construction, designed to take the place of hand-tools used for the purpose of drawing and holding the upper leather in place upon the last or boot while being secured thereto by pegging; and my invention consists in two slotted jaws, pivoted together, and provided withsuitable lever-handles, in connection with a suitable strap attached to one of the handles, the strap being of sufficient length to extend down to the foot of the operator, and, by pressing thereon, brings the jaws together firmly upon the leather, drawing and holding the same in place upon the last, boot, or shoe while being pegged.
In the drawings, A represents one of the jaws composing my device, having suitable serrations a upon its face, and a lip, I), to prevent the leather from slipping from between the jaws. This jaw A is formed with a leverliandle, B, consisting of two plates, 0 '0, forming an opening of sufficient size for the insertion of the operating-jaw O, which is pivoted thereto by a pin or bolt, d. The jaw O is also constructed with a lever -handle, I), and formed with an elongated slot, 6, through which one end of a suitable strap, E, passes, both ends of the strap being inserted through the opening in the neck B of thejaw A. This strap E has at one end a buckle, f, by which the two ends of the strap are connected, and admitting the adjustment of its length to suit the position of the operator, as my device is equally as well adapted for use in a sitting position, with the boot or last in the lap, as in a standing position with a jack.
The operation of the device will be easily understood from the following: Take the leverhandlesB and D of the respective jaws and press them outward, whichwill open them. The left foot is then placed in the strap, the jaws at the same time being made to bite the leather, after which the foot is pressed down upon the strap, bringing the jaws tightly together, and drawing the leather in the desired position, where it is pegged to the boot or last.
With this device there is no danger of tearin g or otherwire injuring the leather, which is quickly drawn into position, and easily held there, giving the operator the liberty of both hands to use the pegging-awl and hammer.
This device is very simple in construction; and may be manufactured at a trifling cost,
bringing'it within the reach of all who are in FREDERICK J. DAVIS.
