UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY S. GINTHER, OF DUQUOIN, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO MICHAEL J. SCHRADER, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPLEMENT FOR REMOVING BUTTON-FASTENERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 389,145, dated September 4, 1888.
Application tiled June 7, 1888. Serial No. 276,325. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. HENRY S. GINTHER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Duquoin, in the county of Perry and State oflllinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Implements for Removing Metallic Button-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such to as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, 'and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specitcation.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in implements for cutting and removing the button-fasteners from shoes or other objects to which they may be 2o attached.
The object of my invention is to provide an implement by means of which metallic buttonfasteners can be severed and removed from the leather, and which will at the same time hold the button between the cuttingjaws of the implement. The device is also provided with an awl located in or attached to one of the handles, so that it can be projected out of the handle when it is desired to 3o remove portions of the fastening devices, and
l my invention, with the above objects in view,
consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and specifically pointed outin the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is plan View. Fig. 2 is a sectional View taken through the line a: c of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken through the line i/ y of Fig. l. Figs. 4 and 5 are views showing the cutters removed and applied.
rlhe implement consists of handles A and A, which are pivoted to each other, after the manner of ordinary pliers, by a screw or rivet, a, which forms a fulcrum, on the opposite side of which pivot are formed the cutting-jaws B B. These cutting-jaws are convex on their under sides, the upper sides being formed with concave hollow spaces, which, when the jaws are united, form a receptacle for the retention o of the button at the time of cutting and after the metallic fastening has been cut.
Above the upper sides of the cuttingjaws extends a shield, C, which may be secured to the handle by the pivot or screw a. This shield O has an opening formed in the end portion of the same over the cutting-jaws, through which the button can be seen, and will be retained thereby in the space when severed from the fastening. The cutting-jaws may be formed integral with the handles, or 6o they may be formed, as shown in Fig. 5, with dovetailed projections, which will enter dovetailed recesses formed in the jaws B B, as fully illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5.
The handle A of the implement is provided with au opening,e,within which may be placed an awl,f, one end of the same bearing upon a spiral spring, s, for projecting the same out of the opening. The outer end of this opening is screw-threaded for the reception of a 7o tubular screw-threaded cap, s', through which the awl passes. The head of the awl engages with the cap to prevent the same falling out ofthe opening. This awl is held either in or out of the opening by a set-screw, g. The end of the handle A which carries the awl is provided with a projection, h, which extends beyond the point of the awl when the same is retracted, for preventing the hand of the operator coming in contact therewith.
Vhen it is desired to remove a button from a shoe, the cutting-jaws are placed over the metallic fastening, so that the shank of the button will lie within the recess formed in the jaws and under the shield, and by pressing S5 the jaws together the metallic fastener will be cut to remove the button therefrom, and said button will lie between the jaws and under the shield when severed. After the button is cut from the fastener the parts of the fastener re- 9o maining attached to the leather can be readily removed by the awl being inserted under and elevating them, the rounded end of the handle being used as a fulcrum in removing these fastenings.
The shield C may be attached to one of the jaws in any suitable manner7 and moves with the jaw to which it is attached.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters rco Patent, is-
1. In a device for removing metallic butthe spring, a tubular retention-cap, s', and a set-screw, g, substantially as described. r 5 3. The implement herein described, having a chambered handle, an awl inserted in said chamber', with a spring aitthe rear thereof, and a set screw, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in 2o presence of two witnesses.
'HENRY S. GINTHER.
