' This invention relates covers for ash cans and has for its principal ob e ct to provide a cover that is so constructedas to per-l will automatically move to closed position for accomplishing the above mentioned result.
A still further object is to provide an ash can cover of this character that is extremely simple of construction and that may be manufactured and marketed at a cost but slightly greater than the ordinary types ofcovers now generally used.
Other objects will become apparent as the nature of the invention will be better understood, the same comprising a novel form of cover hereinafter more fully described, shown in the acompanying drawings and claimed.
In the drawing wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts in both of the views Figure l is a perspective of an ash can cover constructed in accordance with the present invention, and
Figure 2 is a detail transverse section thereof.
Now having particular reference to the drawinv the cover 5 is of circularshape and preferably of sheet metal that is closed at its top side and open at its lower side and at which lower side the same is formed with an outwardly offset wing 6 to permit the slipping engagement of the top upon the open upper end the dotted line in Figure 2 and designated A.
A can top constructed in accordance'with the present invention is of relatively greater depth than the conventional type of ash can tops and when arranged upon t e can as disclosed in Figure 2 the top wall thereof is in position considerably above the upper open end of the can. The said top wall is formed throughout substantially one-half its area with an opening 7, the ed e of which declines toward the front si e of thetop as of the ash can disclosed by a clearly disclosed .in both ranged within this 'op e'ning is, sheet metal, plate 8 that is formed in aniiiioli'l'ledmanner the same, extending dpwnwarolly to the top the inner ed e thereof terminating under the top wall of tile lid for thus providing a Chute for receiving the ashes and for causing the same to fall downwardly into the can A when a lid is applied thereto. Preferably the outer edge of said plate 8 is attached to the edge of the opening 7 b bending the same thereover and then wel ing, soldering or otherwise permanently attaching the plate to the lid.
Hingedly secured to the edge of the top wall of the lid above the chute as at 9 is a freely swinging door 10, the lower edge of he i which is similar in shape to the shape of the inner edge of the chute plate, the same being of a width as to extend beneath the edge of the chute plate when said door is closed which is the normal position of the same as per the full line in Figure 2, said door automatically opening by the weight of the ashes striking thereagainst for permitting the same to pass...

The inner edge of the chute plate 8 may be and preferably is equipped at its underside with a packing strip 11 to provide a dust proof joint between the chute an said door.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a highly novel, simple and efficient form of lid for ash cans that is well adapted for all of the urposes as heretofore designated, and even t ough'I hate herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made without eifecting the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
