WATER AND VENT BOX.
Application filed August 6, 1925. Serial No. 48,455.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY EDELMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania,have invented a certain new and useful Water and Vent Box, of which the following is a specification.
This invention, generally stated relates to water and vent boxes and has more especial relation to a novel construction of the same.
The leading object of the present inven tion may be said to reside in the provision of a water or vent box of simple efficient and comparatively inexpensive structure provided with means whereby the lid or cover of the box must be first lifted for a limited distance and the lid thereafter rotated before said lid or cover can be detached from the box. 7
A further object of the present invention resides in the provision of general details of construction and arrangement and combination of parts for effecting the results sought by the leading object.
I A still further object of the present invention is to provide the box proper with an iriturned annular ledge whereby cement may be introduced between the side walls of the box and the drain pipeprojected into the box to eifect a sealed joint. A still further object of the present invention is to provide a box of the character stated in which a minimum amount of material is employed in the box structure thus obviating relatively heavy vent box cases as at present used. v
The invention consists of the novel construction hereinafter described and finally claimed.
The nature, characteristic features and scope of the invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanylng drawings forming part hereof, and in which 1 Fig.1, is a top or plan view of a water and vent box embodying the invention.

Fig.1 5, is a view; in section taken upon the line 5-5 of Figt 15 Fig. 6, is a view of the underside of the lid or cover shown in Fig. 7 and Fig. 7 is a view in cross section of a vent box embodying the invention. For the purpose of illustrating my invention I have shown in the accompanying drawings several forms thereofwhich are at present preferred by me, since the same have been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the reference numeral 1 designates a casing preferably of annular structure provided at its bottom with an annular flange inwardly extended as at2. In practice this casing 1 is used in a pavement and is inserted in the paving material 3 so that the top annular ledge 4: thereof is positioned slightly below the top surface of the paving material 3 as clearly shown in Fig. a. The rim 4 of the casing 1 is notched upon opposite sides as at 5, see Fig. 3, and intermediate said notches upon opposite sides the wall 1 has preferably formed integral therewith laterally extended ledges 6 and 7 and laterally disposed lugs 8 and 9. Projected into the opening 10 of easing 1 is a soil pipe 11 and between the inner wall of casing 1 and the outer wall of soil pipe 11 is introduced cementor other sealing material 12, as plainly shown in Fig. 41. This material 12 is filled in upon the annular ledge 2 of easing 1 and serves to prevent water seeping between casing 1 and the outer walls of. the soil pipe 11. The cover of the water and vent box is designated 13 and is of substantially disc-like configuration and has projected in a vertical manner from the bottom thereof a plurality of lugs Those lugs designated l i and 15 are hook shaped and in practice are adapted to en gage beneath the flanges 6 and 7 The remaining lugs are designated 16 and 17 and are notched as at 18, see Fig. 2, the notched parts 18 normally being seated within the notched parts 5 of ang 1. The object of the lugs 16 and 17 e g ging the iiotched parts 5 is for the pursues of preventing acctdental rotation of the lid or cover, as for instance when persons might be walking over the pavement and accidentally kick the lid or cover. As the cover is prevented from being rotated in any direction it becomes absolutely necessary to first vertically lift the lid or cover before the rotative movement can be made. The lid or cover 13, as shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, is provided with a screw 19 the head of which is fitted to the counter-sunk portion 20 as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 5. The screw 19 projects into casing 1 and the screw threaded end thereof is provided with a nut 21. Assuming that the cover is in the position shown in Fig. 1, that is with the lugs 16 and 17 seated within the notches 5 of easing 1 and with the hooklike members 14- and 15 engaging the underside of ledges (3 and 7 rotation of the lid or cover in any direction is prevented because the parts 16 and 17 are interlocked with respect to notches 5 and the hook-like members 14: and 15 are in abutting relation to the lugs 8 and 9. Thus, accidental displacement of the lid or cover'is absolutely prevented except the lid or cover be raised vertically and then rotated. This can only be accomplished by grasping the head of screw 19,1ifting the same vertically until the nut 21 abuts against the underside of said cover whereupon the head or cover may be lifted in a vertical direction and then by a twist of the wrist disengaged from ledges 6 and 7 so that the cover may be removed.
Referring now to Figs. 6 and 7. The con struction of the casing 1, sealing compound, and soil pipe are the same as above described. The lid or cover 22, however, instead of being provided with the screw 19 is apertured a at 28. The underside of the lid or cover is provided with a somewhat conical shaped deflector 2d screwed to the underside of said lid or cover as at 25. Otherwise the construction of the lid is the same as thatshown in Fig. 2. To lift the lidor cover 22 so that the hook shaped members 1st and 15 may be disengaged from the ledges 6 and 7 it is merely necessary to insert through one or more apertures 23 of said lid or cover a suitable implement so that the lid or cover may be first lifted vertically and then partially rotated to disengage said hook like members from said ledges.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is:
1. In a device of the character stated an annular casing the upper rim of which is notched upon opposite sides, overhanging ledges intermediate said notches, a coverplate provided with projections upon its under side for normally engaging withsaid notches and With said ledges to prevent accidental rotation of said cover-plate and finger engaging means provided said coverplate whereby said cover-plate must be first raised to disengage said plate with respect to said notches in order that said cover-plate may thereafter be rotated for entire disengagement.
2. In a device of the character stated an annular casing the upper rim of which notched upon opposite sides, and the lower rlm of which is inwardly extended, to form a ledge, overhanging ledges intermediate said notches, a cover-plate provided with projections upon its underside for normally engaging with said notches and with said ledges to prevent accidental rotation of said cover-plate, finger engaging means provided said cover-plate whereby said coverplate must be first raised to disengage said plate with respect to said notches in order that said cover-plate may thereafter be rotated for entire disengagement, a soil pipe extended up into said casing, and a sealing compound introduced between said casing and pipe and sustained by said first-mentioned ledge.
In a device of the character stated an annular casing the upper rim of which is notched upon opposite sides, overhanging ledges intermediate said notches, a coverplate provided with projections upon its under side for normally engaging with said notches and with said ledges to prevent accidental rotation of said cover-plate, and finger-engaging means, including a vertically movable member operably fitted to a countersunk portion of said cover-plate, provided saidcover-plate whereby the coverplate must be first raised to disengage said plate with respect to said notches in order that said cover-plate may thereafter be ro tated for entire disengagment.
