Abstract

The invention relates to a lid (10) for a garbage container (12). The body (14) forming the lid defines a chute formation (16) leading to an opening (20) through which garbage can be fed via the body into a garbage container on which the body is located, in use. The walls (32, 34) of the chute formation are associated with a magnet (18) that can trap metal objects. A flap (22), optionally also having a magnet (40) associated herewith, is pivotally mounted on the body to provide for blocking of the opening while garbage is not being fed into an associated garbage container. The lid is intended to be used with garbage containers into which leftovers of eating establishments are discarded, in order to trap tableware that often are simultaneously discarded.

Description

A LID FOR A GARBAGE CONTAINER
THIS I NVENTION relates to a lid for a garbage container.
The lid for a garbage container, as herein envisaged, is provided particularly for use in eating establishments, such as restaurants. In this regard it is well known that upon discarding leftovers from plates, or otherwise, into garbage containers, tableware including knives, forks and spoons often are simultaneously discarded, thus resulting in substantial financial losses. The above constitutes a problem and, as such, it is an object of this invention to at least alleviate this problem.
According to the invention there is provided a lid for a garbage container, which lid comprises
a body formed to fit on a garbage container and defining a chute formation leading to an opening through which garbage can be fed via the body into a garbage container on which the body is located, in use;
at least one magnet secured on the body in the region of the chute formation or trapping metal objects passing through the chute formation; and a flap, pivotally located on the body in the region of the opening, that is urged into a position in which it blocks the opening and that is pivotally displaceable to permit garbage to pass via the chute formation through the opening.
The body of the lid of the invention particularly defines a locating formation formed to locate the lid on a garbage container. The configuration of such a locating formation may be greatly variable and will depend particularly on the configuration of a garbage container on which the lid is to be located, for use.
The body forming the lid particularly defines a main wall with the chute formation being formed by walls depending from this main wall. As such, the chute formation may be defined by a base wall and two side walls, with the base wall extending angularly downwardly from the main wall of the body, with the body disposed in its operative configuration on a garbage container. The base wall of the chute formation typically extends at an angle of approximately 45° to the main wall of the lid.
The magnet of the lid of the invention may be a permanent magnet that is located on the operative underneath side of the base wall of the chute formation. The lid also may include two or more magnets secured on the body in the region of the chute formation for trapping metal objects passing through the chute formation. The or each magnet specifically is of a type that has sufficient magnetic qualities to permit metal objects such as tableware, when disposed of into a garbage container via the lid of the invention, to be trapped on the base wall of the chute formation.
The flap of the lid of the invention may be hinged with respect to the body in a configuration in which it is urged by the force of gravity into its blocking position in which the opening is blocked. The side of the flap facing away from the chute formation also may have at least one magnet secured thereto, this magnet also serving to trap metal objects passing through the chute formation into a garbage container on which the lid is fitted, in use. This magnet particularly serves to trap metal objects not trapped by the magnet associated with the chute formation.
The body and the flap of the lid of the invention may be formed of any suitable material and, as such, may be formed of a synthetic plastics material, or the like.
The lid of the invention may be adapted particularly for use with various other applications that can benefit from trapping metal objects disposed of into a container, as herein envisaged.
Insofar as the lid of the invention may be provided as part of a garbage container, the invention extends also to a garbage container which includes a lid, in accordance with the invention, as part thereof.
Further features of a lid for a garbage container, in accordance with the invention, are described hereafter by way of an example of a lid illustrated in the accompanying diagrammatic drawings. In the drawings:
Figure 1 shows a plan view of a lid for a garbage container, in accordance with the invention; and
Figure 2 shows a sectional elevation of an arrangement comprising the lid of Figure 1 , located on top of a garbage container.
In the drawings, a lid for a garbage container, in accordance with the invention, is designated generally by reference numeral 1 0. In Figure 2, a garbage container is designated generally by reference numeral 1 2.
The lid 10 comprises a body 14 formed to be located on the garbage container 12 and is shown so located in Figure 2. The body 14 defines a chute formation 1 6 leading to an opening 20 through which garbage (not shown) can be fed via the lid 10 into the garbage container 1 2. The body 14 has a magnet 18 secured thereon in the region of the chute formation 1 6 for trapping metal objects (not shown) passing through the chute formation 1 6. The body 14 has also a flap 22, pivotally located thereon by means of a hinge 36, in the region of the opening 20. The flap 22 is urged under gravity into a position 24 in which it blocks the opening 20. The flap 22 is pivotally displaceable to a position 26 to permit garbage to pass through the opening 20.
The body 14 particularly defines a locating formation 28 adapted to locate the lid on the garbage container 12. In alternative arrangements not shown, the body forming the lid may define locating arrangements adapted to locate the lid on a range of garbage containers.
The body 14 as shown defines a main wall 30 with the chute formation 1 6 being defined by a base wall 32 and two side walls 34 (only one of which is shown in Figure 2) depending from this main wall. The base wall 32 extends downwardly from the main wall 30 at an angle of approximately 45° to the main wall. The main wall 30 has reinforcing ribs 42.
The magnet 1 8 of the lid 10 in the embodiment shown is located on the underneath side of the base wall 32. The magnet 1 8 is a conventional permanent magnet which has sufficient magnetic qualities to permit metal objects such as tableware (not shown), when accidently disposed of into the garbage container 1 2 via the lid 10, to be trapped on the base wall 32 of the chute formation 1 6.
The rear side 38 of the flap 22 also has a magnet 40 secured thereon. The magnet 40, in practice, serves to trap metal objects which were not trapped by the magnet 18.
The lid 10 may be formed of any suitable material including a synthetic plastics material, or the like. Clearly the configuration of many of the features of the lid may be greatly variable and will depend on the configuration of the garbage container on which the lid is to be located, for use. The lid of the invention also can be adapted particularly for use with various different applications which may benefit from trapping metal objects disposed of into a container as herein envisaged.
It is submitted that the lid 10 for a garbage container may effect significant cost savings by trapping and thus allowing the manual retrieval of metal objects, such as tableware, that are inadvertently fed, together with garbage into an associated garbage container.
