T. KELLACKEY PIPE THREADING vDIESTOCK Filed Aug. 8, 1924 2 Sheets-Sheet l Patented Oct. 18, 1927.
Unirse stares PAT TIMOTHY KELLACKEY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
PIPE-THREADING DIESTOCK.
Application filed August 8, 1924. Serial No. 730,820'.
The present invention, relating, as indicated, to die stocks is more particularly directed to a pipe threading die stock provided with means for automatically releasing the dies on completion of the threading operation. A further object of the invention is the provision of an extremely simple and elli/cient mechanical means operable upon the completion of the threading operation and engaged by the stock being threaded when the latter has reached a predetermined position for resetting the threading members. To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends, said inven tion, then, consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The annexed drawing and the following description set forth in detail certain mech anism embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In said annexed drawings:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of my improv-ed die stock; Fig. 2 is a similar view with a portion of the mechanism removed; Fig. 3 is a similar view with the cover or end plate of the stock removed; Fig. l is a plan view of the setting handle and cam; Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5-5 in Fig. 3; Fig. 6 is a. transverse vertical section through the setting mechanism; Fig. 7 is a section on the line 7-7 in Fig. 6; and Fig. 8 is a section on the line S-S in Fig. 1 showing a guide means for the dies 2.
The die stoel; proper consists of two spaced annular members 1 and 2, in each of which are mounted in radial position a series of threading members or dies 3, shown in Fig-s. 1, 2 and 3, these members being radiallyA movable upon the rotational move ment of an operating member or cam plate 4 mounted upon the upper member 1. This cam plate l is provided with a series of cams engaging in slots 7 in the die members 3, the engagement being such that rotation of the cam plate will produce inward or outward radial movement of the die members, depending upon the direction of rotation of the cam plate, and this movement will be equal for all of the several die members.
Mounted in a boss 8 of die case l, formed as a part of one of the handles 9 of the member 1, is a shaft 10, which is provided at its lower end with a loclring handle 11. This shaft is bodily movable circumferentially of the die in the slot 12 formed in the boss, and maybe set in any position in `the slot by turning the' handle 11 to screw down vthe shaft 10 and bring a plate 13 on theupper Iend of the shaft into engagement with the upper surface of the boss 8. The rotatable cam plate l is provided with an extension extending over the boss 8 and slot 12, in which is formed an oval opening lll having its long dimension lying radially l lower portion 15 to act as a cam and rotate the cam plate 4l. The memberl is normally maintained in a position holding the cam plate in its limiting position outward, that is, holding the die members 3 in their retracted position by meansV of a coil spring 18, one end of which engages in a hole formed therefor in the member 15, while the other end of the coil spring engages in a corresponding hole formed in a retaining member 20 formed with a polygonal opening therein which fits over a similarly formed portion on the shaft 10, while a lock nut 21 maintains the retaining mem- 'ber 20 in such engagement on the shaft.
The cam plate is caused to return to its retracted position and to cause the dies to move outJ of engagement with the stock when the stock has reached a predetermined position by the following means. Extending inward into the path of movement of the stock is a lever 22, which is rigidly conneet-ed to an arm 23, (see Fig. 5), the latter arm being pivoted about an aXis 241 and connected at its lower end to a second arm 25 having a movable connection with a ver tically disposed locking pin 26. The latter is provided with a beveled upper end, which fits into a corresponding notch 27 in the member l5, and normally maintains the members 15 and 16 in the desired position. When the stock engages the end of the member 22, however, and swings this member about its axis, the locking; pin 26 is retracted from its engagement With the member l5 and the coil spring 18 then-acts to rotate the members l5 and .16 and in this Way to swing the cam plate to its original position, releasing the die. rEhe tension on the spring 18 may be adjusted by turning down the lock nut 2l, thus coiling the spring and increasing the tension.
The latch member 26 is normally pressed upward into engagement with the recess in the member l5 by means oi a coil spring,l 28 mounted as shown in- Figs. 5 and 6 and op-V erating at its upper end against a shoulder 29 formed on the rod 26.
In Fig. 8,1 have shown the mounting oi the dies 3 in the member l and in the cam plate il. The cam plate is provided with a series oi. downwardly extending ilanges 30 engaging against the uppeiI suri'a-ce oi' the dies 3 and prwentingl tipping of these dies during their inward and outward mov-ement as the die is then borne on the iiat lower bed or guide surface of the member l and against the engaging flange 3 on the cam ring or disk 4.
In Fig,` formed on a removable cover plate on the member l with a single graduation S5 on the cam ring l enabling the user to set the dies to both the normal position and to graduations from the normal to compensate for oversize or undersize heads which it is desired. to out upony the stock.
l, I have shown graduations 32.
Other modes of applying the principle of my invention may be employed Vinstead ci the one explained, change being,v made as regards the mechanism herein disclosed, provided the means stated by any of the iolu lowing,` claims or 'theA equivalent of sueh stated means be employed.
l therefore particularly point out and dis-- tinctly claim as .my invention:
l. In a die stock, the combination of a die head, a plurality oi dies radially movable in said head, means normally maintaining` said d'es in operative position in engagei ment with a blank, said means including a rotatable ringv engaging said dies and having, an opening` therein, a cam mounted in such opening, and means Voperable by a blail; within said dies iior causing actuation of cam to move said ring.
in a die stock, the combination ci a die head, a plurality oi dies radially movable in said head, means normztlly maintaini dies in operative position in engage/mem; with a blank,n said means including a rotatable ring engaging said dies and lnwing an opening therein, acam mounted in such opening', means for adjusting said cam to variously poi "on said ringl and said dies, and. means operable by a blank Within said dies, said means causing operation ot said cam.
Signed by me, this 31st day of March,
lQQa'-,
TMOTHY KELLCEY.
