DIE-STOCK.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 17, 1912.
PatentedFeb. 3, 1914.
Serial No.l 697,865.
To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN lV. Os'rnin.
which the following is a full, clear, and eX-v act description.
This invention is an improvement in the kind of die stocks which include a plurality of radially movable dies and a rotatable adjuster or cani plate conc'entrically mounted upon the die stock body and provided with cam ribs which enter notches in the edges of the dies whereby, when this adjuster is turned, all the dies are moved simi-V lar distances inward or outward as the case may be.
The principal object of this invention is to so construct the dies of such a die stock that all of said dies may be put into 'the die stock and accurately positioned so that., when the adjuster is turned, the cam ribs will enter the notches of the several dies.
The invention is most useful with double ended dies, because such dies cannot be provided with the construction commonly employed with single ended dies for accuratelyl positioning all the dies for engagement with the cani ribs. Obviously, however, the invention is capable of use with single vended dies.
Each of the dies, whose construction forms the novel feature of the invention, has in its front edge the notch to receive a cam rib, and has so much of its side cut away as lies in front of the plane of the bottom of said notch and between the inner or cutting end of the die and said notch, whereby theportion of said side, outside ot the notch forms a shoulder which will engage the associated cam rib when the die has been properly positioned to allow the cam rib to slip into its notch. A double ended die is cut away on both sides, as st-ated, from both cutting ends back to the notch; that is to say, from one end back to the notch on one side of the die, and from the otherend back to the notch on the other side of the die. It is this die and its combination, as described, with the die stock and adjuster having cam ribs, which constitutes the present invention, as set forth in the appended claims.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a front end View of a die stock embodying the inven tion. Fig. 2 is alongitudinal sectional view through one side of said die stock adjacent to aldie, as, oneXample, in the plane of line 2 2 on Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view in the plane of line 3 8 on Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrow adj acent to said ligure.
The die stock includes a die stock body 10 having at its front end the concentric annular flanges 10a, 10b, in which are radially disposed grooves which form guideways for the dies 12. An adjuster 14 is rotatably 4mounted on vthe vfront end of the annular tlange 10a, and is held in place thereon by the cap plate 13 which screws into the end or" the flange 10a. This adjuster 14 has on its rear face as many cam like ribs 14l as there are dies. Each die has in its front edge a transverse notch 12a into which one of the rearwardly projecting cam ribs 14a is adapted to project. W'hen all of these cam ribs are engaging with the notches of the dies with which they are severally associated, the inner or cutting ends of the dies are equal distances from the aXis 0f the tool, and will be moved equal distances inward or outward as this adjuster is turned in one direction or the other. The side of each die from its frontedge back to the bottoni of the notch, and eXtendinfr from said notch to the inner end of the die (on which are the cutting teeth) is cut away, whereby the said side outside of the notch forms a shoulder 12b which, when the cam plate is in the right position, will engage the associated cam rib lila, as the die is moved inward in its associated guideway. It is a matter of no consequence to the present invention how the cam plate is brought lto the required position. For example, the
said cam plate and the cap plate 13 may have graduation lines such as are marked A-Al, so placed that when these are brought into alinement as shown the cani plate is in the proper position.
As shown, the dies are double ended; that is to say, there are cutting teeth at both ends. The purpose of this is to enable the dies to be drawn out and turned around, so that either end of a die may be used for cutting the threads. It is therefore necessary t0 have some means to position the dies, whichever end is put into the guideway first. To
accomplish this result the double ended die is similarly constructed at both ends, but the cut away portions of the die and the resulting shoulders 12b are on opposite sides of the die. lt is therefore apparent that whether one end or the other is pointed toward the axis of the tool, a shoulder 12b will engage the associated cam rib when the die has reached the position where the notch 12F1L will receive said cam plate when the adjuster is turned.
Having described my invention, I claim:
l. A thread cutting die for die stocks, having cutting teeth on one end and a notch in one edge,-the side of said die being cut away from its cutting end to the notch and from the notched edge transversely to the plane of the bottom of said notch.
2. A thread cutting die for die stockshaving cutting teeth on both ends and a. notch in one edge,-one side of said die being cut away from one end to the notch and from the notched edge transversely to the plane of the bottom of said notch, and the opposite side being similarly cut away from the opposite end of the die back to said notch.
3. In a die stock7 the combination of the die carrying body having radial guideways, and an adjuster rotatably mounted thereon and having on its rear face cam shaped ribs, with dies which are movably fitted in said guideways, each die having.v a notch in its edge for the reception of the associated cam rib, and having so much of its side cut away as lies between the notched edge and the plane of the bottom of the notch and between the cutting end of said die and said notch.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto aiiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
