To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Janos Kerr, engineer, a citizenof the Swiss Confederation, residing at Kiisnacht, Canton of Znrich, Switzerland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Lathes and the like, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to an attachment for lathes and the like said attachment .being adapted to be used either as a screw-cutting chuck, cutting-ofi chuck, a centering-chuck or as a back rest to hold the work piece when being operated on.
The object of the invention is to provide an attachment which may be readily fixed to the lathe carriage or to the bed according to the use for 'whichthe attachment is destined.
Another object is to provide a device which may be readily adjusted. to various work and which when used; as a screwthreading chuck'allows a quick and accurate adjustment of the three cutting tools in such a manner that the three tools cut simultaneously and in apredetermined manner in the same thread.
The present invention also comprises other features which will appear in the course of the subjoined description.
Reference is to be had to the accompany? ing drawings forming a part of this specification in which similar characters'of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

My improved attachment is designed to be applied to any kind of lathe, the means for mounting the attachment to the carriage or to the bed of a lathe may be variable and only one "form is shown by way of an example.
The attachment, Figs. 1 to 5, comprises a casing 1 having a downwardly projecting wall by means of which it may be mounted on to the bed or the carriage ora slide rest etc. of a lathe. The casing 1 is provided with a wall 33 having a central circular opening which admits the passage of the piece 19 to be operated upon for instance a shaft. On the wall 33 a steering disk 2 is arranged having three curved slots 4:- Into each of said slots i a stud 10 projects which is fixed to a slide 8 movably arranged between two guides 9, 9, on a cover 15 screwed on the casing 1. Each stud 10 passes through a radial slot 7. The disk 2 is provided with a handle 16 passing through a slot at the circumference of the casing 1 in such a manner that by moving the handle 16 the disk 2 is rotated within the casing Which disk moves the three slides 8 to or from the center according to the direction in which the handle 16 is moved. On each slide 8 the cutting tool 5 is fixed by means of two clamp pieces 6 and screws 25 in the Wellknown manner. To facilitate an exact adjustment of the cutting tool in such a manner that the cuttingedge of each tool exactly points toward the center I provide set screws 20, 21. 0n the circumference of the casing 1 I arrange an adjustable stop 24 by means of a screw 23 which stop prodisk 2. It is provided with a handle 17 projecting through a slot on the circumference of the casing 1. By moving the handle 17 the rollers 13 may be moved to or from the center as desired. The pitch of the curves 4 in the disks 2 and 3 may be made such that the latter hold the rollers 13 and the tools 5 in any position however great the pressure or reaction of the roller 13 and tools 5 may be. The casing 1 is covered by a lid 30 screwed on the body of the casing 1.
The device described may be used as a centering device if only the rollers 13 are used and it may be used as a cutting oflt' device if the tools 5 are made use of.
In the construction shown in Figs. 6 to 11 the casing 40 is provided with a lug 41 having two slots 42 by means of which the casing may be attached to the carriage of the lathe or to the bed thereof by means of suitable well known connecting devices as angles and so on. The casing 40 is provided with a center wall 43 having three radially disposed guideways for three guide blocks or steadying dies 44, said dies 44 being adapted to guide a shaft inserted in the central bore 45 of the wall 43. Each block 44 is provided with a roller 46 which projects into a curved slot 47 of a disk 48 rotatably mounted in the casing 40 on said wall 43. Between the disk 48 and a cover 49 rigidly fixed to the casing 40 a second disk 50 is rotatably arranged.
Said disk 50 is provided with three curved slots 51 and moreover with a handle 52 which projects radially through a slot in the casing 40. The disk 50 is provided with a rim 53 within which thedisk 48 is arranged. In the rim 53 I arrange a pin 54 adapted to engage grooves 55 on the disk 48 in such a manner that the two disks 48, 50 may be connected by said pin 54 with each other and rotated together. The pin 54 is held out of enga ement with the grooves 55 by a spring 5 which abuts with one end on the casing 40 and with the other on a head fixed to the end of the pin 54. If pin 54 is pressed into the disk 48 and handle 52 moved the dies 44 and slides 60 are moved simultaneously in the same sense. The slides 60 are arranged in radial guide ways 61 on a lid 62. Each is provided with a stud 63 passing through a radial slot and projecting into a curved slot of the disk 50. In each guide way a slanting plane 65 is arranged on which a tool rest 66 is slidably arranged. The tool rest 66 is provided with an end piece 67 in which a screw threaded spindle 68 is rotatably mounted. The spindle engages a bore 69 of the slide 60. If the spindle 68 is rotated the tool rest 66 is moved on the slanting plane 65 and the cutting tool 70 which rests on it will be moved in the direction of the axis of the bore 45. By adjusting the three rests 66 the cutting tools may be easily set in such a manner that they cut simultaneously in one and the same thread of the work piece it the attachment is used for screw-cutting work. The tools 70 are held by means of a clamp piece 71 and screws 72. I arrange moreover set-screws 73, to facilitate the adjustment of the tools. On the casing 40 I provide a lug 74 in which a set screw 75 is arranged projecting into the path of the handle 52, by means of which the inward motion of the tools 70 may be limited.
On the other side of the center wall 43 I arrange a cutting-off device which is essentially of the same construction as described above. A disk 76 having curved slots and a handle 78 is rotatably mounted in the casing 40 between the wall 43 and the lid 77. Into each slot 80 projects a stud 81 of a slide 82 on which a cutting-off tool may be fixed in the manner and with the means described above.
The attachment shown in Figs. 6 to 11 admits the cutting-01f and the cutting of screw-threads without necessitating the change of tools.
While I have illustrated and described two practical embodiments of my invention it is to be understood that the latter is not limited to the forms shown but may be embodied in many other forms, and that many modifications may be made in the forms illustrated without departing from the spirit of the invention as expressed in the claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent: I
1. An attachment for lathes comprising in combination a casing adapted to be fixed to the carriage of a lathe or to the bed thereof, two disks with curved slots and a handle rotatably mounted in said casing, three slides for each disk arranged in radial guides of said casing adapted to be moved by said disks, means for centering a work piece on some of said slides and cutting tools on the other slides, means for adjusting the cutting tools in the direction of the axis of the attachment and means for coupling the disk for moving the steadying dies and the cutting tools substantially as described and shown.
