The invention relates to improvements in fastenings for house and apartment doors, and is more particularly designed to be embodied in and with main fastenings or locks applied to the inner faces of such doors and door casings and constructed to be substantially non-forcible or burglar-proof. The special form of main fastening or lock fory which the invention is more particularly intended is disclosed in my prior Patent, No. 1,497,303, dated June 10, 1924. The objects of the invention are to provide an auxiliary fastening on the projecting. keeper for cooperation with the casing of the main fastening or, to provide an improved shackle for securing the door while permitting it to be opened for a few inches, and to improve and strengthen the casing of the main fastening or lock. The door is indicated at 2, and the door j amb.I door frame or wall is marked 3. For greater simplicity no attempt has been made to differentiate the door frame structure and the wall, as these details are not essential to the invention. The casing 4 of the main fastening or lock is applied to the inner face of the door, to which it is secured by screws 5. The heads of these screws preferably rest in thickened portions 6 of the casing wall, these portions being connected by a framing rib 7 and the margin of the casing surrounding this rib being preferably beveled as shown yat 8. Inside the lock casing 4 is a twin bolt 9, 9 (Figs. 2 and 7 which is operable vby a knob 10von the inside 4of the door or by a key lock cylinder 11. onV the outside,'substantially as shown, for example,l in'my prior patent.
As in my said prior patent, the lock casing f4 has an integral extension 12 carried beyond the edge of the door so as toy overlap the door frame. This extension comprises a vertical wall 13 spaced fromV the end wall 14 of the body of the lock casing 4 and strongly united therewith by integral top and bottom portions 15 and 16.v The said walls 13 and 14 are provided with alined openings 15 and 16 for the bolt.
The space or opening between the casing 4 and its extension receives, when the door isclosed, a keeper lip 17, which projects from the door-jamb, inwardly of the apartment, that is to say in a direction at right angles to the plane of the door. This keeper is provided with similar bolt-openings 18 to register with the holes 15 and 16; and, when the door Vis locked,-the twin bolt passes through the holes 16 in the end wall of the casing body, theholes 18 in the, keeper and into or through the holes l5 in the extension wall of the lock casing, producing a very powerful lock. The extension wall 13 is formed, as in my patent aforesaid, with a face flange 19 and a rear flange 20, projecting endwise away from the lock casing and forming a channel guarding the ends of the bolt and greatly strengthening the structure.
Tn accordance with one part of the kinvention, as embodied in the specific lock illustrated, thecface flange 19 is formed inter-l mediate its upper and lower ends with a shackle lug o r projection .21. This projection is preferably in the form of a key-hole eye, made as a thickened boss on the flange, extending beyond the edge thereof, and having a comparatively narrow lateral entrance 22 at its outer side communicating withthe relatively enlarged hole 23 of the eye. held by the increased tension of the spring. The turn-piece now overlaps the body and the extension of the lock casing, offering excellent resistance to opening of the door.
The keeper, as in my pri-or patent, is provided with flanges 4l and 42, at right angles to each other, applied to faces of the door-jamb, to which they are secured by screws 43, 44.
Vhile the preferred embodiment of the invention has been described in detail, I do not wish to be limited to t-he precise details, arrangement and combination, since parts may be varied in form and relation, or may be used without others.
I claim: Y
l. The combination in and with a main door fastening h aving a casing designed to be applied to the inner face of a door and formed with an integral extension spaced from and inline with the body of the casing to overlap the door-frame, with a bolt in the casing adapted to be projected across from the body of the casing into said extension through a bolt-keeper projecting from the door-j amb and intervening between the body of the casing and said extension, of a projection formed with said extension, and a swinging shackle arm pivotally mounted on the door-jamb, said' projection and arm formed for sliding interengagement to the extent limited by the arm and for engagement and disengagement of the arm with the projection when the door is in closed position.
2. lThe combination in and with a main door fastening having a casing designed to be applied to the inner face of a door yand formed with an integral extension spaced from and in line with the body of the casing to overlap the door-frame, with a bolt in the casing adapted to be projected across from the body of the casing into said extension through a bolt-keeper projecting from the door-j amb and intervening between the body of the casing and said extension, said eX- tension having a face iiange, of a projection formed with said face iange, and a swinging shackle arm pivotally mounted on the doorjamb, said projection and arm formed for sliding interengagement tothe extent limited by the arm and for engagement and disengagement of the arm with the projection when the door is in closed position.
3. The combination in and with a main door fastening having a casing designed to be applied to the inner face of a door and formedwith an integral extension spaced from and in line with the body of the casing to overlap the door-frame with a bolt in the casing adapted to be projected across from the body of the casing into said extension through a bolt-keeper projecting from the door-j amb and intervening between the body of the casing and said extension, of an eye .formed with said extension and provided with a lateral entrance, and a swinging shackle-arm pivotally mounted on the doorjamb, said arm formed to be slidingly retained in said eye and having an inner shank portion capable of' passing through said entrance.
4. The combination of a main door fastening comprising a casing applicable to a door and containing'- rectilinearly movable boltmechanism t-o vcooperate with keeper means on the door-jamb, said casing having an extension to project over the door-jamb, a swinging shackle arm pivotally mounted on the door-j amb, said extension and arm being formed for sliding interengagement to the extent limited by the arm so that the door may be opened to that extent and no further, and being also formed for engagement and disengagement of the arm with respect to the extension when the door is in closed position, the pivot of said shackle arm lying beyond the closed-door position of said extension, and thebodyof the arm which is formed for sliding engagement with the projection being convexly offset with respect to the portion of the arm which is formed to pass into and out of engagement with the projection and with respect to said casin 5. The combination of a main door fastening having a casing designed to be applied to the inner face of a door and formed with an integral extension to overlap the doorframe7 lsaid extension having twin bolt openings with a twin bolt in the casing adapted to be projected across from the body of the casing into said extension through an intervening bolt keeper projecting from the doorn jam said extension having a face-flange, a projection on said face-flange, a transverse rib on the extension of the lock casing dis! posed between the twin bolt openings and joining said flange at the region of said projection, and a swinging shackle arm pivotally mounted on the door-jamb for cooperation with said projection, substantially as set forth. v 6. The combination in and with a main door fastening having a casing designed to be applied to the inner face of a door and formed with an integral extension to overlap the door-frame, with a bolt in the casing adapted to be projected across into engagement with the extension, and an outstanding' bolt-keeper lip constructed to be received b etween the body yof the lock casing and, said extension, of a turn-piece onthe end of said keeper lip adapted to lie either with or outwardly of the lip, in the latter position constituting a block opposed to the lock casing.
9.
