Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES POOLMAN, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN EXTENSION-TABLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,479, dated June 15, 1875; application filed April 24, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES POOLMAN, of the city and county of Providence, Rhode Island, have invented a new and Improved Extension- Table, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of a couple of pairs of toggle-bars and a right and left threaded screw for working them, combined with an extensiontable, for extending and contracting it by the turning of the screw,'to lessen the labor, so as to accomplish it by one person, and to draw it tightly and rigidly together, when adjusted, and stifl'en up the middle portion, so as to dispense with the middle leg.
For very long tables two or more sets of this apparatus may be used.
Figure 1 is a plan of the under side of the table. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation, and Fig. 3 is a detail section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A and B represent the two pairs of togglebars, which at the ends of each pair are jointed to opposite ends of the table, and at their connecting-joint are attached to a nut, G, on the screw D, arranged transversely under the table in suitable bearings, and extending from side to side, for the temporary application of a crank to either end, to extend or contract the bars. The two pairs are attached to opposite sides of the table, so as to work them alike, and thus move the table without cramping or binding, as it does when moved by hand, owing to the unavoidable moving of one side faster or slower than the other.
I am aware that it is not new to adjust the leaves of a table by means of lazy-tongs and screw; but
What I claim is- The combination of two pairs of toggles with a median screw, D, and traveling nuts 0, arranged in connection with table, as shown and described.
JAMES POQLMAN.
