v 1,644,782 PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES G. LANIDER, OF MILWAUKEE, WISGONSINZ' BOX.
Application filed March 20, 1926. Serial No. 96,188.
This invention relates to improvements in boxes, and more particularly to paper or pasteboard boxes of the knock down type.
It is one of the objects of the present invention to provide a knock down box formed of grease proof material and nonleakable in construction, making it especially suitable for shipping smoked fish and similar products. I
A further object of the invention is to provide a box of the character described including a cover, all being formed from a one piece blank.
"A further object of the invention is to provide a box of the character describedhaving inwardly inclined sides whereby a plurality of boxes may be packepl one within another to save space in shipping and stor- A further object ofthe invention is to rovide a knock down box formed with an integral cover, the inner surface of whlch may be used for advertising matter, thereby adapting the box for display purposes.
A further object of the invention is to provide a box having independent locking means readily insertable, for holding the.
cover in.closed position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a box in which the cover is formed with depending flaps which cooperate with removable strips insertable in pockets formed in the ends of the box for firmly holding the cover in closed position.
A further object of the invention is toprovide a paper box in which the cover may be firmly held in its closed position.
A further object of the invention 1s to provide a box of the class described which is of very simple construction, is inexpensive to manufacture, is easily assembled, is strong and durable, and is well adapted for the purposes described.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of the improved box, and its parts and combinations as set forth in the claims and all equivalents thereof.
In the accompanyingdrawing in whichthe same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the views:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the box blank; Fig. 2 is a front view of the box as -sembled;
Fig. 3 is an end view thereof; and ",i Fig. 4 is an end view of a slightly modified form of the invention.
said fold lines defining a front flap 18, a
The blank is further provided with corner angularly extending scored fold lines 25 defining triangular corner sections 26 which I are adapted to fold with respect to each other. I
V -shaped notches 27 are cut in the outer edge of the front 24 to form a pair of-lips 28 arranged for insertion in a pair of slots 29 formed in the front flap' l8.
To form the finished box from the blank, the ends 23 are bent up, as are also the front 24 and the rear 21. The triangular corner sect ons 26 are next folded together and against and exteriorlyof the ends 23. Then, the cover is brought down and the cover end flaps 20; overlie p'ortionsof the ends and folded corner sections, as shown in Flg. 3, the corner sections and ends having been previously fastened at the top by staples 30. Elongated strips 31 are then inserted, as shown in'Fig. 3, with their ends received by the-pockets formed between the blanks, or folded into shape and packed one within the other with the covers open, this being permitted by the tapered construction of the boxes. The box may also be used for display purposes withthe cover open and ad-: .vertising matter delineated on the inner surface thereof. Furthermore, the box, proper is formed from a one piece blank and is of very simple and novel construction and is well adapted for the purposes described.
In Fig. 4, a slightly modified form of box is illustrated, showin the adaptation.- of the invention thereto. T 's box includes a separate body portion 33 having folded over triangular flaps 26 riveted in position to form en pockets. A separate cover 34 is also provided and is formed with an annular rim 35 from ,the ends of which depend flaps 20, shaped substantially in the form of an X. To ,removably lock the cover in position, locking strips 31 are used, having their end portions inserted in the pockets formed and overlying medially the lower portions of the flaps 20'.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A folding box, comprising a bottom portion, front and rear portions extending upwar'dl therefrom, atop connected to the upper e ge of the rear portion, ends extending from the bottom, folding corner sections between the ends and the front and rear portions and folded a ainst the ends, flaps extending from the en of the top and overlying portions of said corner sections and ends, and readily removable retaining stri s inserted between the corner sections and t e ends and overlapping the flaps.
2. A paper box having a bottom, ends and sides extending therefrom, a top extending from one side, folding sections overlapping portions of the ends, bottom end flaps folded against the ends and sections, pockets being formed between the sections and the ends, and all of said portions being integral and formed from a one piece blank, .and separate readily removable retaining strips inserted in said pockets and overlying said flaps to hold the same in position.
I 3. A box composed of a single piece of material, having a. bottom, inwardl tapered ends and sides extending upwar ly therefrom, the upper edge of the front side being formed with lips, a top extending from the rear side, corner flaps joining the ends and sides and foldable upon the ends to form pockets, a flap extendin from the front edge of the top and provide with slits, side flaps extending from the sides of the top and overlapping portionsof the ends and corner flaps, the lips in said front side engaging said top flap slits, and independent readily removable retaining strips received between the corner flaps and ends and'overlapping the side flaps and engaging only surface portions of said flaps.
4. In a box, a cover having end dependin flaps, a body portion having end pockets, an readil removable lookin strips insertable in sai pockets'and engaging surfaces of said flaps to prevent withdrawal of the same, said depending flaps being entirely exterior of said end pockets.
5. In a knock-down box, a body portion,
each end of the same being formed with pockets, a cover for the body portion and integral with the back of the box and having depending flaps engaging exteriorly said body ends, and independent locking strips removably inserted in pairs of said pockets and overlapping said flaps to hold the cover in closed position.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature.
JAMES G. LANDER.
