Description
Filed June 23. 1926 4 77%" j 4 3140mm Patented Sept. 27, 1927.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BED BRACE.
Application filed June 23, 1926. Serial No. 118,042.
The deviceforming the subject matter of this application is a bed brace of the general sort' shown in my prior Patent No. 67 4,241, and the invention aims to improve the plates which are connected by the screw, lightness being secured, along with strength, the mounting of the flexible elements on the hooks of the plates being facilitated, and the device being so constructed that there is a straight pull on the screw, preventing a bending of the screw.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
Although a preferred form of the inven tion has been shown, it will be understood that a mechanic, working within the scope of what is claimed, may make such changes as his skill may suggest, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 shows in bottom plan, a bed frame equipped with the device forming the subject matter of this application; Figure 2 is a longitudinal section taken through the tightening device; Figure 3 is an elevation showing one side of the plate of the tightening device; Figure 4L is an elevation showing the opposite side of the plate of the tightening device, the parts being inverted in Figures 2, 3 and 4, from the positions which they will actually assume in use, because Figure 1 is a bottom plan.
In carrying out the invention, there is provided a pair of plates 1 and 2, each of which is provided in one edge 3 with end notches 4, and in its opposite edge 5 with an intermediate notch 6, each plate having outstanding end hooks 7 at the base of the end notches 4:, and each plate having an outstanding intermediate hook 8 at the base of the intermediate notch 65 Each plate has a depression 9 bounded by a projecting flange 10 which extends continuously about the entire periphery of each plate, and about the notches 64, there being a boss 11 located opposite to the intermediate hook S and extended from the flange 10 in the depression 9 as clearly shown in Figure 4 of the drawings. A screw 12 is journaled for free rotation in the boss 11 of the plate 1 and has a head 14 bearing on the outer end 15 of the said boss- The screw 12 is threaded into the boss 11 of the late 2. The deepest portions 16 of the end ooks 7 are in the same plane A-B with the axis C-D of the screw 12. Flexible elements 17 are engaged with the deepest portions 16 of the end hooks 7 and are loose as at 18 about the intermediate hook 8, to prevent the flexible elements from sliding endwise, or, more accurately speaking, to prevent the tightening device, considered as a whole, from sliding on the flexible elements 17.
17 being anchored at 23 on the posts 21.
The operation of the device may be dismissed with. the general statement that by rotating the screw 12, the flexible elements 17 may be tightened up, and the whole bed frame held together.
What is claimed is In a device of the class described, a pair of plates each of which is provided in one edge with end notches, and in its opposite edge with an intermediate notch, the plate having outstanding end hooks at the base of the end notches, and an outstanding intermediate hook at the base of the intermediate notch, the plate having a depression bounded by a projecting flange which extends continuously about the entire periphery of the plate and about the notches, there being a boss located opposite the intermediate hook and extended from the flange into the depression, a screw journaled in the boss of one plate and having a head which engages the boss of said plate, the screw being threaded into the boss of the other. plate, the deepest portions of the end hooks being in the same plane with the axis of the screw, and flexible elements engaged with the deepest portions of the end hooks and looped about the intermediate hook, the notches facilitating the engagement of the flexible elements with the hooks.
, In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature.
JEFFERSON D. KING.
