2 Claims.
The present invention relates .to an improved bond tightener and sealer which is a division of my application bearing Serial No. 529,150, filed April 1, 1944, wherein a preferably solid reel operates in conjunction with a pair of loose latches or bars, operatively connected in spaced parallel relation with opposite sides of said reel, to clamp and substantially seal a flexible lashing or band embracing one or more separate packages or a cargo to be secured, when the ends of said bond or band are inserted between said reel and bars and the same are rotated to wind thereon said ends and thereby tighten and seal said cargo.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a new'and improved bond tightener and sealer for rigidly securing separate objects together and against undue play or movement during a turbulent trip or transportation.
Another object is to provide a new and improved device of the character set forth which may subsequently be readily retightened and resealed to take up the slack in loosened cargo lashings.
A further object is to provide a new and improved bond tightener and sealer which may be reused repeatedly without destroying or seriously marring said bond or lashing, so that the same may be reused indefinitely upon successive cargoes, thereby effecting a saving of time and material.
I accomplish these and other objects by means of the improved device disclosed in the drawings forming a part of the present application, and in which- Fig. lis an elevation of'a cargo of bulky packages secured together upon a carrier, disclosin one application of my improved device;
Fig.2 is a sectional view, on an enlarged scale, of the device, disclosing the manner in which a flexible bond or band embracing a cargo of separate packages has its free ends initially hooked into the device, before tightening;
Fig. 3 is a front elevation, showing both detachable wrenches in operative position;
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing the snubbing efiect after one-half of a revolution of the reel; and
Fig. 5 is a partly broken or sectional plan view of the device, with the flexible band and detachable wrenches removed.
Referring to the drawings:
The numeral l is used to designate one form of a carrier upon which a cargo of bulky cases 2 is embraced and secured thereto by lashings or bonds comprising a preferably fiat metallic band 3, as fullydisclosed in Fig. 1 of the draw ings.
In order to provide suflicient tension upon the band 3 to rigidly secure a cargo to a carrier I, I have provided a tightener consisting of a preferably solid reel 4, hexagonal throughout the length thereof for economy of construction and efiiciency of operation.
A pair of opposite sides of the hexagonal or polygonal reel- 4 are each'provided with a pair of preferably integrally formed lugs 6, cupped or recessed in their inner or adjacent faces, as at 1.
Between each pair of cupped lugs 6 is slidably mounted for limited lateral movement relatively to the axis of the reel 4, the ends of a loose bar or latch 8, substantially in spaced parallel relation also with the axis of said reel 4, as fully disclosed in Fig. 5 of the drawings. A detachable wrench 9 is provided to detachably engage either end of the hexagonal reel 4, while a crank l2, having a lateral extension or'handle M with a button or keeper IS on the end thereof, is provided to engage the opposite end of the reel 4 to rotate or hold the same, in a manner and for a purpose which will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In operation:
A cargo, comprising separate packages or bundles 2, is piled upon the carrier I and embraced by the fiat flexible metallic band, bond,'or lashing 3. The opposite ends of said band 3 are inserted from opposite directions and preferably upon opposite sides of the reel 4 and between said reel 4 and the loose bars 8 thereof, and preferably bent back upon themselves to form hooks, as disclosed in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The detachable wrench 9 and crank l2, are then mounted upon opposite ends of the reel 4, as shown, and the reel 4 and bars 8 are rotated in a direction which will wind the loose ends of the bond 3 around said reel 4 and bars 8, the purpose of the wrench 9 being to hold the reel 4 against counter turning, while the crank I2, with its lateral extension or handle l4 offset to prevent contact with the bond 3, is removed and adjusted to a new position when such is neceswill clearly snub and secure the ends of the bond 3, so that each end of said bond 3 will overlie and press against the other end thereof, and the bar 8 thereunder, and press said end and bar and thereby tightly seal the ends of said bond or lashing by snubbing. Further rotation of the reel 4, by means of the crank l2, will even more tightly bind, seal and snub the ends of the lashing as-the tension of the same is increased.
When sufficient tension upon the lashing is obtained, the reel 4 is secured against a counterrotation or releasing movement by reversing the direction-of the lateral extension M of the crank 12 so that said extension M will lie directly against the tightened lashing 3, and'in a position where the tension of the lashing will tend to move said extension 14 against said lashing and thereby effectively prevent a counterrotation or releasing movement of the reel 4. The button or keeper I5 is provided to prevent the lashing 3 from slipping oil from the end of the extension l4.
It is obvious that the bond or lashing 3 subsequently may be tightened to take up any slack caused by a turbulent journey.
It is also obvious that not only may-a cargo be quickly, easily and effectively secured against relative movement by my improved device, but the same easily-and quickly, with a minimum of timeand labor, released to unload the cargo, and
used repeatedly upon other and successive cargoes.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. A bond tightener and sealer comprising a hexagonal reel; a pair of spaced lugs mounted upon each of two opposite sides of said reel and intermediate the ends thereof, said lugs having their adjacent faces cupped; a bar slidably mounted for limited movement between each pair of lugs; and means for rotating said reel and bars to wind opposite ends of a flexible band embracing a cargo and inserted between opposite bars and said reel to tighten, snub and seal said flexible band.

A bond tightener and sealer comprising a hexagonal reel; a pair of spaced lugs mounted upon each of two opposite sides of said reel and intermediate the ends thereof, said lugs having their adjacent faces cupped; a bar slidably mounted for limited movement between the cupped faces of each pair of lugs; means for engaging one end of said reel to rotate the same and bars thereon to wind opposite ends of a flexible band embracing a cargo and inserted between opposite bars and said reel to tighten, snub and seal said flexible band; and means for engaging the opposite end of said reel and band to prevent counterrotation of said reel.
