L. SEARFOSS TIRE CHAIN LEVER HOOK Filed Feb. 19, 1923 Patented Feb. 12, 1924.,
TENT Fries,
' LYMAN SEARFOSS, or ASHLEY, PENNSYLVANIA.
TIRE-CHAIN LEVER HOOK.
Application filed February 19, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LYMAN SnAnross, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashley, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful TireChain Lever Hook, of which the following is a specification.
Thi invention aims to provide a simple but effective means whereby the flexible element of any sort, for instance the side chain of an anti-skidding covering for an automobile wheel, may be tightened.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described. and claimed, it being understood that, with in the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in side elevation, a device constructed in accordance with the invention, the parts being in the positions which they will assume before the chain has been tightened; Figure 2 is an elevation showing the device as it will appear after the chain has been tightened; Fi ire 3 is a top plan showing the device in t e position of Figure 2; Figure 4 is a cross section taken through the lever, the hook appearing in elevation.
The numeral 1 marks a connection, which may be one link in a chain. The side pieces 2 of the connection 1 are provided at their ends with bearings or eyes 3. A troughshaped lever 4 is provided, the same including a base 5 side walls 6 and a tongue 7 projecting from the base 5 and extended beyond the side walls 6, the tongue being disposed at an obtuse angle to the base. At its outer end, the tongue 7 is supplied with lateral projections 9. Those edges of the side walls 50 6 which are adjacent to the tongue 7 are Serial No. 620,038.
disposed at an acute angle to the tongue, as marked by the reference numeral 8. The side walls 6 of the lever 4 are provided at their corners with trunnions 10 received for rotation in the bearings 3 of the connection 1. A hook 11 is provided. The hook may be of any desired form, but, ordinarily, it
is made out of a single piece of metal, bent as shown at 12 to form a two-part bill 14 and a two-part shank 15, the constituent 6 members of the bill and of the shank being in contact. The members of the shank 15 are turned outwardly to form pivot elements 16 mounted to rock in opening 17 formed in the side walls 6 of the lever 4, the shank 15 extending between the side walls 6. The numeral 18 designates a link in the chain which is to be tightened.
In practical operation, assuming that the parts are disposed as shown in Figure 1, the 7 link 18 is engaged with the bill 14 of the hook 11. The lever 4 then is swung over into the position shown in Figure 2, the lever passing between theside pieces 2 of the connection 1, and the projections 9 of 7 the lever resting on the side pieces. When the parts are arranged as shown in Figure 2, the pivot elements 16 are not in a straight line with the point where the projections 9 are on the connection 1 and the point where the link 18 engages the bill 14 of the hook 11, and consequently, when a pull is exerted on the chain of which the members 1 and 18 form a part, the lever 4 will not tend to swing from the position depicted in Figure 35 2 to the position shown in Figure 1, but will remain in the position delineated in Figure 2.
What is claimed is In a device of the class described, a connection comprising side pieces rovided at their ends with eyes, a trough-s aped lever including side walls and a base, the base being extended to form a tongue disposed at an obtuse angle to the base and provided at its outer end with lateral projections adapted to engage the side pieces of the connection, the side walls being provided, at those corners thereof which are diagonall opposite to the base of the tongue, wit I00 trunnions mounted to rock in the eyes, and In testimony that I claim the foregoing a hook made of it single piece of material as my own, I have hereto affixed my signabent upon itself to form a two-part shank ture in the presence of two witnesses. and a two-part bill, the constituent members LYMAN SEARFOSS.
6 of the shank being outwardly extended to Witnesses:
form pivot elements journaled in the side WM. J. GEMMEL, walls of the lever. AMELIA SEARFOSS.
