Description

o. J. WALINSKY LUGGAGE Sept. 27,1927. 1,643,397
Filed June 2; 1926 2 Sheets-Sheet Patented Sept. 27, 1927.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OSSIP JOSEPH WALINSKY, 0F SEA GATE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR T0 WHITE LUGGAGE CO. INC., OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
LUGGAGE.
Application filed. June 2,
This invention relates to luggage and has for an objecta suit case equipped with a tray which may be used or not as desired and having its lid divided into three compartments. the cover of one of which is independently hinged.
According to this invention, the front wall of the body is of less width than the side walls and the front wall of the lid is of greater width than the side walls. Ledges are provided along the side walls of the body and upon them rests a tray over the end of which the edge of the lid extends when the latter is closed. The tray is thus completely enclosed in the case when the cover is closed and the appearance of the case is unaltered whether the tray be in position or not. Preferably the cover is divided into compartments one of which is provided with a separately hinged cover in which is arranged a mirror.
Other objects novel features and advantages of this invention will be apparent from the following specification and accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a suit case embodying the invent-ion with the cover raised.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the suit case with the cover closed.
Figure 3 is a perspective view with the mirror carrying cover raised.
10 represents the body of a suit case to which is hinged a lid 11. The front wall 12 of the body is of less width than the side walls and ledges 13 extend along the side walls of the body to support a tray 14. From the upper edges of the side walls of the body extend ridges 15 which engage the inner faces of the side walls of the lid 11. The edge of the front wall of the lid 11 projects beyond the edges of the side walls so that when the lid is closed the edges of the lid and body are in contact.
A pair of partitions 16 divide the cover 11 into three compartments of' which the middle one is provided with a separately hinged cover 17 in which is mounted a mirror 18. The front walls of the two end compart- 1926. Serial No. 113,163.
ments are provided with latches 19 to cooperate with locks 20 on the body 10 to hold the lid 11 in closed position. The member 14 15 provided with upstanding flange 21 and cooperating means are provided on the flange and lid for locking the latter to the former.
It is of course understood that various structural modifications may be made without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A suit case comprising a body having a front Wall of less height than the side walls, a lid hinged thereto, said lid having a. front wall of greater height than its side walls, ledges on the side walls of said body and a tray supported by said ledges, the front walls of said body and said lid cooperating to completely close the front of said suit case.
2. A suit case comprising a body having a front wall of less height than the side walls, a lid hinged thereto, said lid having a front wall of greater height than its side walls, ledges in said body, a tray supported by said ledges, partitions dividing said lid into compartments, a separately hinged cover for one of said compartments latches carried by the front walls of two of said compartments to lock the lid to the body and cooperating means on said separately hinged cover and said tray to lock the latter to the former.
3. A suit case comprising a body, a lid hinged thereto, said lid being composed of top, front, back and end members and having its bottom substantially entirely open, supports within said body, a tray removably supported by said supports within the conlines of said body, partitions dividing said lid into compartments, a separate hinged cover for the central one of said compartments, said tray forming the bottom of said central compartment when the lid is in closed position.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
OSSIP JOSEPH -WALINSKY.
