IMPROVEMENT IN EXTENSIN-TABLES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,207, dated .l une 8, 1875,' applicatlon led October 17, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, NICKOLAUS PETRY, of Rockport, in the county of Atchison and State of Missouri, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Extension-lables; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and 1i gures of reference marked thereon.

Figures l and 2 of the drawings are representations of sectional views of my table, respectively showing thev same open and folded. Fig. 3 is a plan view.

This invention has relation to extensiontables; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the parts constituting` the extension-table, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. I

In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the body of the table-support, consisting of the usual legs B and transverse connecting end boards C and side boards C'. The end boards C are notched in their upper edges at a a for the passage of the slide-bars hereinafter described. The side boards are conf nected at their middle portions by a transverse bar, D, which rests upon their upper edges, and is slotted near its connection therewith for the passage of devices which fasten the center board to the table-support. Underneath the bar D may be transversely channeled to guide the slide-bars and prevent lateral movement thereof, if thought desirable. E designates the center board or table-top proper. This is not rigidly attached to the table-support, but is anchored thereto by means of slotted arms b, which pass through the slots c of the transverse bar D, and engage with screws or pins d secured to the inside of the side board C', and capable of removal should it be desired to take the tabletop olf from its support. G Gr represent the extension-wings, which may be equal in width to the distance from the edge of the center bar D to the edge of the center board E. To the under side of each side board are rigidly attached the outer ends of two parallel slide bars or arms, H, the lower edges of which rest in the notches a of the end boards C, and the upper edges of which bear against the under side of the center board E. The lower edges of these slide-bars are inclined, as shown at e, and the upper edges of their inner ends are designed to have au inclination parallel, or nearly so, with that of the lower edges, as shown at f. The vertical distance between these inclined edges should be about equal to double the thickness of the table-top. 'On the under edges of the slide-bars H are formed stops 7c, which abut against the inside'of the end boards C when the wings are drawn out, and form, with the inner edges of said wings. when the center board is dropped between them, a clutch-fastening, which keeps said win gs steadily in contact with the center board, and effectually prevents the accidental opening of a cleft between them.

For the purpose of preventing all marrin g or scratching of the upper surfaces of the win gs when they are pushed beneath the center board, suitable bearings m, of rubber or other material, maybe let into the under side of the table-top proper.

L designates side blocks equal in width to the center bar D, and serving to steady thc same, and to close the gap between the inner edges of the extensions Gr when the latter are pushed in.

When the table iscontracted, to extend it raise the center board at one end and pull out the corresponding wing, andA both pieces will fall into place. Repeat the operation at the other end, and the extension will be complete In order to contract the table when extended, raise the center board and push home the extensions under the saine.,

I am aware that a rising center board and two horizontally-sliding wings, adapted to be stowed under said center board when the table is contracted,.and to be protruded therefrom when the table is extended, have heretofore been employed; and I therefore lay no claim to such invention.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In an extension-table, the combination of the support A, the notched end boards C, the rising center board E, the extension-wings G,

slide-bars H, slotted arms b, and pins d, all

arranged to operate as described.
