VThis invention relates toj a'lug strap support, and particularly to a construction adapted for application t the picker stick or staff' of a loom ,by which the `loop eX- tending from the actuating bar is connected to'said stick. Y *l j Y 'In the operation of such constructions ythe movement of tliebar in opposite directions imparts a pressure (or impact: tothe l'connecting means "for "the support upon the stick resulting in a; frequent'loosening there# ofrlwhich requires f replacementJ of the sup-k port in aynewfposition.. llt has lalso been found desirable to provide a construction of `support `which may fbe readily l adjusted verticallyfupon thel'y'stick,`" reversed in position; thereon, or used "inL cooperation with a n similar'support at the opposite .side ofthe stick. Such 4a fieldjoff'location and adjustment of the supportlil'asvnot been possible i' in prior/constructionsso far as l am aware andA tliefpresent invention y is designed to provide asimple construction capable of the improved functions and of a rigid connection lwith` the stick when securedv thereto.
It has also been found yimportant to avoid thediectbearingof the leather loo from they actuating bar against the metalllc body ofthesupport, and this has been effected by a novel construction in which 'the portion of the support surrounding thevloop is odset from they stick and provided with bearing surfaces engaging the stick at one side andl having an antifrictionsupp'ort :for the vertical edgesof'the loop which contacts therewith.v y g fThe invention has for an object to provide a novel and improved construction including a supporting plate having an outwardly disposed shoulder at its upperend with a strap supporting face and an offset guard from the outer portion of said shoulder having an inwardly disposed projection comprising a bearing at the upper edge of the lug strap.
Another object of the invention is to provide a longitudinally slottedv supporting plate carrying at its upper portion an offset guard and combined with a clamping plate disposed yat the opposite side of the stick and connected with the retaining plate bymeans of an attaching bolt or similar device.
A further object of the invention is to provide a retaining plate having a longitudinally disposed iange at one side vand a substantially horizontal movement ofthe curved'shoulder at the upper end of said Harige from which an offset guard extends and is'rpr'ovided with an inwardly disposed curved Vbearing lug contacting with the face of the stick, together with means for rigidly securing the retainingplate'in position."
f Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and' thesnovel features thereof defined by the appended claims.
jIn the accompanying drawing: jgFigure l is an elevation showing the con? neotion between the stick and strapg" e.
Figure 2 is an enlarged elevation from the opposite side from Figure 1j with' part of-thestick broken awa 'V Figure 3 is a detail e ge view; Figure 4 is a section on the line 4 4 of Flgure 3; and i i Figure 5 is a similar View of a modified applicationoftwo of the su ports.v i
Like reference numerals Vdesignate corresponding parts throughout the several Yfigures of the drawing zo'y Referring tothe drawing7 A 'designates 80 the picker stick or staff; conventionally used 1n loom apparatus and B the actuatin or connectingrod from which the strap eX- tends to embrace the stick.' The present invention relates k'particularly'to means for supporting this strap in its relation to the stick so that it may bev free for thejnecessary oscillatory movement incident to the movement of thestick ina curved path and a' actuating bar. AFor this purpose the support 1s provided with a late 10 adapted to engagev a face of the stic and formed with A a longitudinally extending flange `11 at one edge which engagesl an angular face of the stick so as to prevent an oscillatory movement of the plateupon its connecting means.
At the upper portion of the supporting or retaining plate 10 a shoulder 12 extends outward therefrom and is formed with an inclined or curved bearing surface 13 from kwhich arguard plate 14 extends longitudinally of the stickand is provided at its upper end with an inward'projeotion or lug 15 having a curved or inclined inner face 16 adapted to engage the edge of the strap C in its movement vrelative to the stick. Such a construction removes the strap from rubbing or abrasive contact with the metal of the support and permits the saine to be freely lis operable upon the body oi the` stick sul rounded thereby. This accomplished by offsetting the guard plate and providing` inwardly extending bearing surfaces which contact with a side ot the stick.
In the use et such a support it is frequent ly desi able to adjust the position thereof vertically upon the stick in order to secure the most ellicient positioning of the loop relative thereto and for this purpose the retaining` plate l0 is provided with a lengt tudinal slot 17 extending` parallel to the flange il. and through which a retaining de vice such as the holt it?, is passed. This holt being mounted in the stick permits the vertical adjustment ot the support thereon and for `the purpose of retaining the support against accidental slipping or play it may be formed with a plurality ot teeth or pins as indicated at 19 which are embedded in the Wood o t the stick when the bolt is tightened. Cooperating` with the head Q0 ot the bolt l also use a clamping plate Qi having` angular ilanges 22 al; each side which einhrare the stick r and retain the plate against rotative movement thereon.
The construction ot'the support is such that it may he disposed at either side oi the stick or reversed in position thereon, 'lier instance, as shown by dotted lines at :23 in Figure Il, in which case the position ot the holder tans'ferred :troni one side of the stick to the other. llnder soinecoiuglitions of use it may be desirable to provide the sup ports upon opposite 'tacos oit the stick and such result can be accomplished by the construction shown at Q3 in Figure 3 or by securing the supports by the same attaching` means as indicated hy the section'in Figs ure 5 whereinthe retaining plates l0 are parallel to each other and secured by a device indicated at Qel. In such an arrangement the second. supportused replaces the clamping plate 2Q indicated in Figure 3.
The operation oit the invention will be apparent 'from the 'foregoing description troni which it will be seen that the construction provides for a wide tield oit adjustment of the support upon the picker stick to provide for substantially all desired positioning thereof relative to the strap and further il'orm a guard having bearings for the verti cal movement ot the strap and retaining the saine against lateral displacement. In such a construction it is particularly desirable to provide against any movement of the support` upon the stick, and for that reason the structure of the retaining plate with its V[lange is provided in connection with the guard plate carried by the upper end thereof.
lhile the specilic construction of the several parts has been shown and described, the invention is not confined thereto as changes and alterations may be made therein Within the spirit ot the invention as defined by the following claims.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
jl.. A lug strap support comprising a retaining plate having an outwardly disposed shoulder at its upperend with an inclined supporting tace, an offset guard from the outer portion ot said shoulder terminating in a tree end and having an inwardly dis posed. lug at the upper end of the guard engaging a side of a stick but free from the ed thereot` and formed with a bearing tacefor a lug strap, and means extending longitudinally of the plate below said shoulder lor retaining the plate against lateral movement upon a stick.
Q. The combination with a picker stick, ol a slotted retaining plate having an angularly disposed longitudinal flange at one edge and an outwardly extending shoulder at its upper end with a curved bearing tace. an odset guard :from the upper portion of this shoulder terminating in a tree end and having an inwardly disposed lug with a curved bear? ing` face :tor a strap, a clamping plate upon the opposite face ot the stick from the retaining plate and formed with angular flanges to engage the edges oi said stick, and means cooperating with the clamping and retaining plates to permit the longitudinal adjustnient of the latter upon the stick.
In testimony whereof l aliix my signature.
