IMPROVEMENT IN BARBED-WIRE FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,181., dated June 8,1875; application filed January 30, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES KENNEDY, of Hinckley, in the county of De Kalb and State of Illinois, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Wire Fences, which are simple in construction and durable and efficient in use; and it consists in forming a barb with a body or cylinder, with an opening on the inside of suflicient size to fit the wire of the fence, and bending both the body of the barb and the Wire of the fence together, by which means the barb is prevented from moving longitudinally, and also prevented from turning, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which this invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompany' ing drawings, with letters of reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specification,
in which-- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a fence embodying my invention. Fig. 2' is a section of the body of the barb, taken on line 00 0c of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the barb and body before the body is bent.
A represents the fence wire before the barbs are placed thereon, and A represents the wire, showing the bends at b. B represents the posts of the fence. The barbs are formed with a body, 0, and projections a, as shown in Fig. 3. They are formed of metal, and the body O of such kind of metal as will bend. This body is then slipped on the wire A, or a number put on and arranged at suitable intervals, and then both the body 0 of the barb and the wire of the fence bent together by tongs of suitable form, or by any other means, so that the bend in the body 0 and the bend in the wire of the fence correspond to each other, by which means the barb is prevented from moving longitudinally, and also prevented from turning on the fencewire.
By this means a very simple and effective invention is produced, and the barbs can be attached and secured after thefence has been or is being put up. Y
- The barb and body may be of a single piece, bent to form a proper size for encircling the wire of the fence, as desired, with a space where the parts of the body meet, as shown in a former patent to me.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The fence-wire, in combination with a barb having body 0, both the fence wire and the body being bent together, and having bends of corresponding forms, whereby the barb is prevented from moving longitudinally or turning, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
