Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES C. MGGLIN AND THOMAS E. HART, OF SHABB ONA GROVE, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BARBED FENCE-WIRES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 182,212, dated September 12, 1876; application filed August 2, 1876.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JAMES O.v MGGLIN and THOMAS E. HART, of Shabbona Grove, in
the county of De Kalb and State of Illinois,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barbed-Wire Fences, of which the following is a specification; and we do hereby declare that in the same is contained a full, clear, and exact description of our said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference markedthereon. V
This invention relates to a novel construction of a perforated sheet-metal barb, and its combination with the several strands of a laidwire rope.
In the description of our invention which follows due reference must be had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a view of a portion of a fence embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a view of a portion of-=the same. on an enlarged scale and Fig. 3, a side view of the improved barb, also on an enlarged scale.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts of the invention in all the views.
A A are the fence-posts, and B B wire-ropes, connecting the same, and secured thereto by means of staples. The wire-rope B is preferthe usual manner, and is attached to the barbs O as follows: The barbs consist in pointed sheet-metal devices, perforated as shown, the number of perforations corresponding to the number of the strands of wire used. The barbs are attached to the wire-rope in its manufacturc,-the strands of the rope being at certain points spread and passed through the perfo rations in the barbs, as is clearly illustrated in the drawings.
The barbs are preferably shaped as fivepointed stars; but barbs of other delineation may be used without afl'ecting the nature of the invention.
Having thus described our invention, what We claim as new, and Wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is'- A perforated sheet-metal barb, combined with a laid-wire rope the several strands of which pass through the perforations in said barb, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto subscribed our names this 26th day of July,
