WRENCH.
Application filed Februaryld'wz; Serial No.` 9,460.'
yhandle member adapted to be longitudinally shifted relatively to the one end of the wrench member thereof and adapted also to be shifted to one side and folded to the side of the wrench member; fourth, to provide a wrench having a wrench member provided with diametrically opposed notches at its one end adapted to receive the one end of the handle portion of the handle means. shiftably mounted at said end of the wrench member; fifth, to provide a wrench of this class having a handle member longitudinally shiftably mounted at the one end of a wrench member and provided at the portion of said handle member mounted in said i wrench member with a retaining means piv-` otally connected thereto, whereby said handle member isretained in association with said wrench member for rotating the same, or whereby said handle member may be folded to one side of thewrench member; sixth, to provide as a whole a novelly constructed wrench, and seventh, to provide a wrench of the character mentioned which is very simple and economical of construction, durable, efiicient,` compact when folded, kand which will not readily deteriorate or get out of order.
With these and other objects in view, as will appear hereinafter, our invention consists of certain novel features ofconstruction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions, as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and Vto the characters of reference thereon, which form a part of this application, in which:
Figure 1 is-an end view of our wrench structure, with the handle membervthereof in operative relation with the wrench member; Fig. 2 is a side elevational view thereof, showing certain parts and portions broken away and in section to facilitate the illustration and lshowing fragmentarily by dotted lines the handle and other members withdrawn from the one end of the wrench member ;V Fig. 3 is another side elevational view of our wrenchwith the handle member thereof folded to the one side of the wrench member and Fig. 4 is an end view of the wrench when folded as shown in Fig. 8.
Like characters of reference refer to similar parts andportions throughout the Aseveral views of the drawings.
The wrench memberV 1, head member 2, n
handle member 3, retaining member 4, and the ,pin 5, constitute th-e principal parts `and portions of our wrench structure in its preferred embodiment as a socket wrench.`
The wrench member 1 is preferably tubui lar and provided at its one end with a wrench portion 1a inv the form of a socket adapted to receive a nut, bolt head, spark plug, and the like, the structure illustrated in the drawings being particularly adapted S for spark plugs. y At the opposite end of the tubular wrench member 1 is provideda plurality of relativelyl deep `recesses or notches 1b which are -diametrically opposed to each other and adapted, kwhen the wrench is in operation, ,to .receive the one `end 3a ofthe handle member 3, the extended-'portions1c:v
at the last mentioned end of the member 1 being engageable bythe handle member 3 when desiring to` rotate the'member 1.
`Within and at the vone end of the tubular i member 1 provided with thenotches and slightly spaced inwardly from the lower end of said notches is a head member 2 provided with a central hole 2a into which is adapted to be inserted a portion 3b extending at right angles from the main portion of th-e handle member 3 between the port-ions thereof posi tioned between oppcsitelydisposed slots of the member 1. At the end of the .portion 3l? is pivotally connected, by means of a pin 5, the lug portion 4b' of the handle retaining member. 4, thelug being provided at the end opposite its pivotal connection withthe portion 3b with anenlarged member or disc 4'UL which is adapted to engage the inner side v of the head member 2 fwhen the handle y member 3 is withdrawn. I
It will be here noted that the head member 2 may be in the form of lugs punched inwardly from the desired.,
wall of the ymember 1, if
handle member from the Wrench member l;
Thus, it Will be seenthat the nut, bolt head, spark plug, or the like adapted to bev tightened or unscreived may be successively rotated small portions of a turn Without removing the Wrench member from the object to be rotated, by slightV manipulation of the handle memberrlVhen through using the Wrench, the `handle member 3 is Withdrawn lto the dotted line position shown in Fig. 3 and then tilted about its pivotal connection With the member Ll to the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4l, providing acompact and e'llicient wrench.
Though We have shown and described a particular construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions, We do not Wish to be limited to this particular construction, combination and arrangement, but desire to include in the scope of our invention, the construction, combination and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described our invention, What We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
