This invention relates to rovements in conveyers for logs and thev e comprising more particularly the usel of companion logs which are particularly constructed to s facilitate the carrying of the lo and permit and facilitate'the withdrawa :ofthe o in a direction which 'at substantiall rig t angles to the path of movement gf 'veyer with less frictional resls nce than operation with .conveyers now in use. v The invention is illustrated yin' the accompanying drawings,in which:
. Fig. lis a more or less diagrammatic viewla showing the use of improved conveyer chains in the carrying of logs. Fi 2 's a plan :of onefof the links of the chain Fig. 3 is a side elevation ofi-the same with 'en' the connected links in dotted outline.
The im Iroved chain is made up of links -which inc ude a base-1 having upstandmg projections 2 and 3,-at the respective en ds, The projection 3 is, below the upper portion 25 thereof, divided to provide aA recess 4 which extends -into thebase 1. The -projection 2 at theo posite end of the link is spaced from such end 'and the link end proper is in the form of a lug '5 adapted to seat in the ao recess 4 of the ad acent link. The pivot pin 6 extends throng the walls of the recess 4` and lug to couple the links flexibly together. A spindle 7 is su ported in the respective lprojections 2'an l3 extending lon'- gitudina ly ofthe linkand this spindle is preferably fixed in position b transverse pins 8. A roller' 9 is rotatab y .sup orted upon the spindle having aA length su tantially equ jections 2 an 3. and a diameter which will permit the upper surface of the roller to ie in a plane above the upper ends of the' v 1 the roller constituting su stantially the fulll V i projections. Assuming companion chains arranged in spaced relation to jbe travellingin adirection of thev arrow indicated in Fig. land.
. the lumber, here indicated as logs 10, delivered from a loadingl platform 11 will fall onto the conveyer c ams for delive at a remote int. As the logs are de ivered they frequently' fall at an angle other than aright angle tothe conveyer chains, and it is n to straighten such logs for convenient transportation. For this purpose. anl oper'ators platform 12 is are conmanner.
the distance between the proranged adjacent the line of travelv of the chains and the logs are straightened by lthe opherator through'theuse of a cant hook or o er implement.- Itis further necessary, at times, to withdraw a lo during the travel of the chains, and as t "s movement of the log is at right angles to the path of movement of the chains; and such Ylo'gv is su ported upon rollers mounted for rotation in that direction theremoval of the lo .may be. conveniently secured in an expe itious The rollers 'act as the sole supporting ele-- .ments for the logs thus facilitating the adjustinent' of the'logs into a position substanfor convenient transportation an also `ma te'riall facilitate the movement of the log at rigl t .angles to the patl'of movement of the c ains in the event) it is desired to remove the log from the conveyer.
`A tially at right angles to the conve er chains I am aware that devices for' the sainey general purposes `as above described are known inthe art, but so far as I am awarev such devices involvel anv element which is not to be found in the construction of my im roved ,conveyen For example, -conveyers. aving rollers whose axes are parallel tothe conveyers have been roposed, but in suchconstructions the rol ers are covered, there being an aperture in the cover through whichV rtion ofthe upIper circular surface of the 1 tion describe "accomplishes everything that such covered rollers can accomplish.
1. A log 'carrier including a chain made up of a series of movably connected links, each link ca is arranged longitudinall of the link with supporting surface of the link.
2; A link for log carrying'chainsand th like comprising a base having upstandi projectionsl at the res ctive ends tliereon and a roller su porte in said upstanding ends and exten g throughout the greaterportion ofthe length of the base and arranged wholly abovethe same. tulip testimonyA wheregf I a'x mysigna- "aEDMoND H.
