IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING AND SLIDING TEN-FOOT POLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,133, dated J une 8, 1875 application filed January 30, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN W. BLATOH- LY, of Dickson City, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding and Sliding Ten-Foot Poles, of which the following is a specification:
The present invention relates to a new and useful improvement in ten-foot poles or rods and consists in the construction of the same, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side view of the rod standing on its edge. Fig. 2 is a side view, showing the rod folded together. Fig. 3 is an edge view, showing the folded rod partly opened.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
This rod is made of four sections of wood marked A, B, O, and D, as seen in Fig. 1. The two middle sections B and O are hinged together with a common box-rule hinge enlarged for this purpose. To keep this hinge rigid when the rod is opened there is a slide, E, which is slotted and held in place by two screws. F is a bar-plate attached to the other part 0, which receives the slide when the rod is opened, and thereby holds the joint rigid. WVhen the rod is closed or folded the slide is pushed back. This slide may be made in any other manner. The sections A and D are confined each by the bands G G and H H. The bands G G are attached to the slides A D, and the bands H H are attached to the ends of the parts B O, and are of course stationary. The sections A D slide up to the shoulders I I, as seen in Fig. 2, in which condition the rod is readily carried from place to place. The rod is marked offinto feet and inches, in any convenient manner, to make it handy to measure with, and is (when extended) precisely ten feet long from end to end. It is designed to take the place of the Well-known and universally-used ten-foot pole.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent As a new article of manufacture, a ten-foot pole made in four sections, the two middle ones hinged together and provided with slide E, the shouldered part 0 I having bar F, and the parts A D having hands G H, all constructed, notated, and arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
STEPHEN w. BLATGHLY.
