My principal aim is to generally improve v upon inventions of this class by providing one of comparative simplicity and durability which is constructed to assure a firm and eflicient grip on the pipey in a manner to prevent undue marring of the surface, and possible crushing from any powerful pressure fromthe jaws of the vise.

It is yet to be pointed out that appropriate spring latches may be connected with one of the half sections l to coact with keepers 9 in the other half sections to hold the two half sections `together when the clamp is removed from the latch.
From the foregoing description it is obvious that the half sections Vof the clamp are swung apart and that-the pipe l() is placed therebetween, after which the clamp and the pipe are placed between the face plates of the jaws, and the jaws piped in the usual manner, thereby obtaining an indirect grip through the medium of the clamp on the pipe. The fact that the clamp is cylindrical inform and compara-tivelyV long, affordsa grip havingconsiderable area, and thereby guarding against crushing and injury of the pipe. In this connection I wish to call attention to the fact that the outer casing formed by the halves 3 is of comparatively hard metal, while 1 the` interconnected or nested bushing forming sectionsl are of a more or less malleable metal.
The gist of the invention resides in the particular construction, arrangement of parts wherein sectional j bushings are conned within a sectional casing, the sections of the bushingsbeing nested together and held in assembled relation by projections fitting into complemental openings so that by using a suitable instrument, the sections may be pried apart to adjust the central opening to any desired diameter to lit different diameters of pipes.
The invention will be clear to those skilled pbufality of bushings arranged in said oaeing, each bashing being composed oi a pair of half-sections of Syn'inietrieal configuration, and izo-acting' ineans between the adjacent sections of the respective bushings for maintaining said sections in nested relation, whereby to adapt said device for clampingl pipes of various diameters, said co-aeting nieans comprising lugs on the outer faces of said sections fittingr into` correspondingly shaped holes on the inner faces of the cooperating sections.
