Description

Nrrien STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN BRAUN, OF PHILADELPHIA, IEXXSYLVANIA.
SHAFT-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATIGN forming part of Letters Patent No. 292,978, dated February 5, 1884.
I all whom; it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN BRAUN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shaft-Couplings, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which' Figure 1 is a side elevation of the shaftcoupling embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof in line .r 00, Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a transverse section in line .2 z, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an end'view thereof. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section in line y a, Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a view of the interior of the coupling. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists of a shaftcoupling having a clamp which is operated by a screw, the action whereof to compress the clamp against the shaft in a powerful and secure manner. I
It also consists of certain details of construction, as will be herein set forth.
Referring to the drawings, Arcpresents the body of the coupling or hub of a pulley or wheel, and B B the shafts to be coupled, said body being hollow and provided at its ends with heads 0 0, whose centers have openings for the reception of the shafts. The head 0 is formed separate from the body and at tached thereto by means of screws I), which are passed through openings in said head, and engage with lugs E, which are castwith the body A and project from the inner face thereof. The other head, 0, is cast with the body, but may be made and attached similar to the head 0.
F represents a clamp, which is somewhat of U shape, and located within the body A, said clamp having an opening near its bend or crown for the reception of the ends of the shafts B B, the limbs F of the clamp constituting jaws, being separated ,and having re-' cesses 011 their outer faces, in which are fitted nuts G G, of which in the present case there are two on each side. In i the jaws F are transverse openings coincident with the openings of the nuts G, for the passage of screws H, which engage with said nuts.
Application filed May 15, 1832. (X0 model.)
Projecting longitudinally from the ends of the clamp F are teats or studs J, and in the heads 0 G are openings a, which are adapted to receive said studs J, whereby the clamp is connected with the body and the two move as one. I
In the wall of the body A are openings K, which occupy coincidentpositions with the heads of the screws H, so that said screws may be rotated from without the body A by means of a key, wrench, or other suitable implement inserted through said openings K.
In the heads 0 O are openings L, which register with the space between the limbs or jaws F of the clamp F, whereby a wedge may be introduced into said spacethrough the openings L, for forcing apart said jaws should they G on opposite sides of the jaws F being different to accommodate the difference of the threads of the screws.
It will be seen that when lengths of a shaf t screws are rotated in opposite direction or loosened, the jaws are relieved, whereby the two lengths of the shaft are adapted to be removed from the coupling and reapplied or re placed. When an ordinary screw is employed in lieu of the differential screw H, the former is journaled to one of the nuts G and engages with the opposite nut, so that the legs F F of the clamp, which expand and contract, may be brought together or permitted to separate for the purpose of holding or releasing the lengths of the shaft. The body or shell A protectively incloses the clamp and adjacent parts, and when made of cylindrical form may be employed as a pulley, as is evident.
I do not claim, broadly, a shaft-coupling having an internal clamp provided. with a differential screw and nuts.
Having thus described my invention, what I substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a coupling, an internal clamp having a differential screw and nuts, and exterior shell formed at its ends with heads, which are connected with said clamp, substantially as described. p p
4. In a coupling, an internal clamp having studs J, in combination with the exterior body or shell, having openings a, which receive said studs, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. A clamp having legs F, in combination with the heads of the exterior body or shell, having openings L coincident with the space between said legs, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
6. In a coupling, a hollow body or shell, in combination with a clamp having means for attaching it with the heads of said body, one or both .of said heads being removably connected with said body, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
JOHN BRAUN.
