HATBAND.

This invention relates to hat bands, as fitted to ladies and mens soft h exteriorly around the base of the crown and provides a made-up bow-band which can be fitted in position and will fit the hat crown snugly without the necessity of .haping or stitching the band.

The invention relates to detachable bowbands of the kind wherein the band proper is discontinued for distance, such. discon tinued part being occupied by a single elastic insertion substantially of equal width to tie band itself, which completes and closes the band, the said elastic insertion being hidden under the bow, said bow consisting of a separate piece sewn .by one of its ends to the band proper, its loop beingloosely mounted on the elastic insertion, or being formed by doubling back the ends of the bow.

In previous proposals of the foregoing kind the elastic insertion has been ofrectangular shape, its ends being parallel with one another, but since the crown of the hat usually tapers towards the top the result has been that the band stands away at its top edge, from the crown.

The present invention, which has for its object to obviate this disadvantage embodies an elastic insertion consisting of a single elastic strip substantially the full width of the band as has been previously proposed, but the present invention is characterized in that the said insertion has the shape of a symmetrical trapezoid or is otherwise shaped so that its sides taper towards its top edge. The result is-that the band is caused to assume a shape which conforms more or less to the tapering contour of the hat crown, so that when fitted in place its top edge does not stand away from said crown.

A further feature consists in the formation of the bow as will be hereinafter described.

Referring to Figures 1, 2 and 3, the band shown therein consists of a main strip 1 which nearly forms a complete loop but is discontinued for a short distance; that is to say there is a gap between its two ends. Such gap is occupied by an elastic insertion 2. The said elastic insertion 2 has the shape of a symmetrical trapezoid as shown or is otherwise shaped so that its side edges 7 taper together towards its top edge, the end edges of the band 1, to which said side edges of the elastic member 2, are stitched being cut obliquely to correspond. The result is that the band assumes a slight cone shape which conforms more or less to the tapering contour of the hat crown, so that when fitted in place its top edge does not stand away from the hat crown. The bow consists of a separate doubled strip .3 of similar material to the band itself stitched at its point of doubling 4 to the band near to the left hand side edge of the elastic insertion 2, and a loop or sleeve 5 of the same material which encircles the band and also the double thickness of the strip 3, when arranged in position as shown in Figures 2 and 3. Said sleeve 5 may be loosely mounted or may be stitched or otherwise secured to the strip 3 or to the band 1 or elastic insertion 2.

A modification of the foregoing construction is shown in Figure 1, wherein the bowl is formed by continuing the strip 1 at one end past the point 6 where the elastic insertion is stitched to it. The continued part is doubled back from such point 6 for a short distance and then back again forming the'rear thickness 7 of the bow. At the end of such part 7 the continued part is again doubled back to form the front thickness 8.

In a further modification, the continued part of the strip 1, from the point 6 may, instead of being doubled back from such point, pass directly across the elastic insertion 2 exteriorly and be doubled back when beyond such insertion.
