Description

G. W. HUNTER.
, Holder for Brooms. N 164,088.. v Pate nte dlune 8,1875.
WITNESSES INVENTOR 7% F1 4 r r 1 ft) ATTORNEY THE GRAPHIC COJ'NOTO LITH.39&4I PARK PLACE, Y.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. HUNTER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO WILLIAM F. STONE, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT lN HOLDE RS FOR BROOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,088, dated June 8, 1875 application filed May 17, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. HUNTER, of the city of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Brooms and other like articles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of my invention with a broom suspended. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view, showing the projections on the jaws, and the base or plate for attaching the device to the wall.
A represents a plate or base, by preference made with a curve, as shown in Fig. 2, and provided with stop-shoulders a a; and B B are cam-shaped vibrating jaws pivoted to the plate, as shown, and having projections h h extendin g forward from the faces thereof, flaring outwardly, so that, a broom-handle or other cylindrical body being forced between said projections, the jaws will swing open, and by reason of milled or roughened faces, terraced shoulders, and cam shape, the handle or body will be caught and held or suspended as desired. E represents a plate of tempered steel, screwed or secured into the bed-plate or base A in the angle made by its projecting arms, the outer extremity of which is beveled at its sides, thereby furnishing angular slots for the insertion of the knife-blade, which may be sharpened by passing it alternately through said slots, so as to bring each side of the blade in contact with the tempered steel, said blade being guided to and kept in position by the cam-jaws hung upon the arms A, the same being adapted and intended to operate to the best advantage when the broom-holder is securely fastened in position for use as such. It is also obvious that a rope or hawser may be stopped by this device.
It is found desirable in most cases to limit the movement of the jaws, and for this purpose the plate is provided with its stop-shoulders, and the jaws with ears or stops as 00. By this means the jaws are always ready to be most readily swung open, and an article suspended by a lateral or side motion of the same.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a broom-hanger, the cam-shaped jaws provided with flaring guides, having a serrated peripheryand outer flange, substantially as described and shown.
2. The plate A, provided with stop-shoul ders a a, and jaws B B, provided with ears or stops w w and projections h h, when combined for operation substantially as shown and described.
3. As an article of manufacture, a broomholder having cam-jaws hung upon arms A,
in the angle of which is placed the plate E,
beveled at its sides to furnish angular slots for the insertion of the knife, substantially as set forth and described.
