GLUING MACHINE.

This invention relates to machines for pasting or fastening box structures or the like to a folio or a covering adapted to en fold said box structure or the like.
The main object of the invention is to provide a machine adapted to have folders or covers fed into same at one end and box structures or the like at an other point of the machine and then pasting or fastening the said box on the folder.
Another object of the invention is to provide a pasting or gluing mechanism intermittently operated in the path of the object to be pasted.
A further object of the invention to provide an intermittent advancing mechanism for the object to be pasted to the folder.
Other objects and novel feature of construction of my invention will become apparent as the description proceeds. I

Referring to the drawings in detail, ,10 indicates a clutch mechanism operated by a foot lever 11 associated with a clutch oper- 40 ating or shifting lever 12 against the tension of a spring 12 to clutch a power driven pulley 13 mounted on a drive shaft 14 journaled in the side frames 15 and 16 of the machine and having a pinion 17 secured there 45 to in mesh with a gear 18 on a'shaft 19 journaled in the bearings of brackets 20 and 21 mounted on the base 22 of the machine. A forked lever arm 25 forming a part of the foot lever 11 and having a roller 26 mounted 50 thereon incontact with a detent or cut out 27 in a disc 28 mounted on the shaft 19 acts to always start and stop the machine at the same point. The pinion 17 on the clutch shaft 14 transmits motion to the gear 18 to 55 actuate or revolve the shaft 19 upon which 1926. Serial No. 105,430.
is secured a cam 30 adapted to raise a table I or carrier 31 slidingly mounted in slideways 32 fixed to the frame members 15 and 16. The said table 31' is raised by means of the high portion 30 of the cam 30 pressing against a roller 33 on an arm 34 guided at one end on the shaft 19 by a slotted extension 35and at the opposite end is pivotally connected to a lever 36 associated with the table 31 and a lever 37 pivoted on a pin 38 in a bracket 39 fast to the frame of the ma chine.- A plate 40 provided with guide members 41 adapted to receive a cover blank 42 (Figs. 4 and 7) is mounted on the table 31 at the front of the machine. At the rear of the machine there is provided a conveyor belt 45 travelling on rollers 46 and 47 and driven by a sprocket chain 48 running on a sprocket wheel 49 mounted on a shaft 51 to which the roller 46 is secured and is journaled in upri ht frame members 52 and on a sprocket wheel 53 on a shaft 54 having secured thereto a spiral gear 55 in mesh with another spiral gear 56 on the shaft 19 driven from the main source of power through the gears 17 and 18. The conveyor'belt ls provided with guide rods 57 adapted to guide boxes 58 or the like in their travel to a point 59 at the rear of the machine (Fig. 4) from where theyare advanced to the front of the machine to be secured to the cover blanks 42. The blanks are advanced to the securing position in the following manner. A disc 60 eccentrically mounted on the shaft 19 and operating in an eccentric strap 61 having an arm 62 associated with an arm 63 of a lever 64 mounted on a shaft 65 journaled in a bracket 66 fast to the frame of the machine, said lever 64 having an arm 66. connected by means of a link 67 to a slide bar 68 secured at one end thereof to a cross bar 69 which is secured to a push bar or plunger 70 comprising upper and lower arms 71 and 72 respectively, the arm 71 passing over and the lower arm 72 passing under the top of the conveyor belt 45, the lower arm-7 2 being provided at its forward end with a pivoted member 73 maintained in normal operating position by a spring 74 secured to the arm 72. It will be seen from Figs. 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 that as a box or the like travelling on the conveyor belt 45 reaches the position indicatedat 59 in Fig. 4 its movement in the direction of the arrow will be intercepted by a stop bar 79, the conveyor-belt continuing in its movement, as the box is only held on the conveyor by gravity. When the box reaches this particular point mentioned the push bar is brought forward to a position shown in Fig. 5 by the eccentric 60 and the connecting means 62, 63, 66 and 67 with the upper plunger arm 71 abutting the rear of the box 58. As the shaft 19 continues to revolve the eccentric 60 will advance the plunger 70 and the plunger arm 71 will push the box 58 to a position indicated at 80 Figs. 1, 5 and 6. During the travel of the box 58 from the position 59 to the position 80 the bottom of the box 58 will have paste applied to it at the right and left hand edges thereof by rollers 81 and 82. These rollers 81 and 82 are normally in contact with a paste roller 83 journaled and I partly immersed in a paste pot 8% suspended from the frame of the machine. As the box is pushed forward and passes over the rollers 81 and 82, a slidably mounted frame structure 85 in which the said rollers are journaled is raised up to contact the rollers with the bottom of said box by means of a cam 86 mounted on the shaft 54: depressing a roller 87 on a lever 88 against the tension of a spring 88* said lever being guidingly mounted on the shaft 5 1 and having a rod 89 extending therefrom in engagement with a lever 90 pivoted at 91, said lever 90 having a connecting rod 92 extending therefrom and connected to a cross bar 93 joining the walls 94 and 95 of the slide frame 85. To apply paste or glue to the peripheral surfaces of the rollers 81 and 82 it is necessary to revolve them. This is accomplished by a sprocket 97- on the shaft 19 driving a sprocket wheel 98 by means of a sprocket chain 99. The sprocket wheel 98 is mounted on a shaft 100 which also carries the glue pot roller 83 and a friction wheel 101 in frictional contact with a wheel 102 on a shaft 103 carrying the rollers 81 and 82. It will be noted in this connection that after the glue has been applied to the bottom of the box and the box brought to the position indicated at 80, the plunger 70 is brought back to the position shown in Fig. 5, the glue on the box in the meanwhile having a chance to set so as to have greater adhesive properties and stick to the cover 42 when pressed against same. lVith the box in this position a retaining member 105 pivoted on a bracket 106 supported on an extending arm of a bracket 107 suspend from the bars 108 and 109 in upper frame members 110 will assume the position shown in Fig. 6 to prevent the box from being drawn back on the return stroke of the plunger 70. On the next revolution of the shaft 19 the plunger 7 0 will again be drawn forwardly and the member 7 3 which on the return stroke of the previous revolution of the shaft 19 will have been depressedagainst the spring 74 under the box 58 and brought into contact with the rear of said box will advance the box into a position indicated at 112 Fig. 6 and into pivotally suspended guideways 1 13 Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 6 over the cover blank 42 lying on the plate 10 between the guideways 41. With the cover blank and the box in the position just described, the table 31 carrying the plate 40 with the blank 42 thereon will rise and the box and cover will be pasted together. The action being as follows: The cam 30 will lift the table 31 and a plate 11% secured thereto by brackets 115 and resting on the tops of collars 116 on shafts 117 having adjustable collars 118 secured to them, said collars 118 acting as abutments against which the plate 114 in its upward movement will act to lift said shafts 117 connected at their upper end by a plate 119, the shafts being guided in bearings or sleeves 120 on the side frames of the machine. The plate 119 has fixed thereto brackets 121 having depending arms 122 to which there is pivotably connected levers 123 with extended portions 124 normally bearing against a roller 125 mounted on a resiliently maintained bracket or top frame 126 supported on the side frames of the machine and guidingly maintained in proper alignment on rods 127 extending the entire height of the machine. As the plate 114 comes in contact with the upper collars 118 the plate 119 will be lifted upward on the rods 117 carrying with the arms 123 and extensions 124t against the roller 125 causing the guideways 113 containing the box 58 between them to open up against the pressure of springs 127 and allow the said box to fall on the cover blank 42 and pressed and pasted to same between a block 128 on the resiliently mounted frame 126 and the'plate 410 after which the table 31 will again descend carrying with it the completed box which is then withdrawn from the plate 40 and another cover inserted to be operated on.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a machine adapted to feed boxes or the like on a conveyor belt toa predetermined point, advance the said boxes one by one over glue rollers adapted tofbe raised and apply glue to two edges of the said boxes, allow same to be held in another position to all-ow the glue to become more adhesive and then advance the boxes to a further position where they are pasted to a cover blank and then removed from the machine in amanner and a rate of speed hitherto unknown in the art.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new is: l I
1. A machine adapted to paste a cover to a box, comprising a movable carrier, a plate on said carrier, guideways on said plate adapted to hold a cover between them, 'a.-utomatic box advancing means, paste applying means in the path of travel of said box and means for automatically pasting said cover to the box.
2. A machine of the nature described, comprising automatic box feeding means, means for applying glue to the underside of said box, means for advancing the box over said glue applying means to a predetermined position, a movable carrier adapted to hold a cover blank thereon, means for further advancing the box to a position above and in line With said cover blank, and means for pasting the cover blank to the box in said position.
3. In a machine of the nature described, box advancing means, comprising a plunger, an arm on said plunger adapted to advance the box to a predetermined position, a second arm on said plunger adapted to advance the box to a further position, automatic plunger actuating means, means for guiding the box in its travel comprising a plate, guideways secured to said plate adapted to guide the box to the first mentioned position, a second plate, guideways hingedly suspended from said second-plate, and'means for actuating the said second mentioned guideways to release the box.
4. In combination With box advancing means, comprising a plunger, an arm on said plunger adapted to advance the box to a predetermined position, a second arm on saidplunger adapted to advance the box to a further position, stationary guideways adapted to guide the box to the first mentioned position, movable guideways adapted to guide the box to the second named position, a movable carrier and means on said carrier adapted to actuate the second mentioned guideway to release the box.
5. In combination with a box advancing mechanism, a movable carrier means for lifting the carrier, a plurality of box guides resiliently associated With said carrier, an arm on each of said guides, a roller associated with the arms adapted to actuate the guides to release the box when the carrier is lifted to a predetermined height.
