This invention relates to improvements in the production of the parts of boxes or containers having a curved bottom.
In the production of boxes and particularly those which are provided with lids and with a neck insert it is usual to give the lid a convex curvature and also to provide it with impressions.
It has been proposed to form boxes first with a fiat bottom and a flat lid, to open them after they are completed and in this condition to deliver them to a stamping press which produces the curvature of the bottom of the lid and the necessary impressions. This known method has the disadvantage that it involves changing the shape of the already completed box, an operation which with fragile articles does not produce a satisfactory product.
It has moreover been proposed to curve the blank as regards its bottom portion before production of the box and to apply the blank thus shaped to the completed under part and form it on this. This operation involves great dificulty because the shaping of the lid portion on the neck insert is naturally possible only when the lid portion is of fragile paper and the neck insert of strong cardboard.
As distinguished therefrom the present method consists in shaping a box blank already curved as regards its bottom portion in a shaping chan nel with'the aid of a forming block adapted to be applied to the one side flap and having a shape corresponding to the curvature. In this way separate box or container parts or even complete boxes can be produced with and without neck. inserts in one operation and the curvature of the portion of the bottom of the box in question produced in a satisfactory manner.
In apparatus intended for carrying the method into efiect a pile of blanks is provided from which the blanks are delivered separately into a press for curving the bottom whereupon the blanks withthe bottom now curved are placed in front of a shaping channel or in frontof the forming block, the side ofthe shaping channel corresponding to the curved side of the forming block being mounted resiliently.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying. dra.wings in which I Fig. 1 is a vertical longitudinal section through the apparatus, a

Fig. 16 is a lateral sectional pleted box.
Referring-to the drawings, the blanks Z0 are fed from the pile 1 to the shaping station W by means of a lug 2' on the plunger 2. e shaping means consists of a matrix 3 and a hollow die 4 which after the blank is in position on the matrix presses on the side flaps oi the blank. The shaping die 5 which is movable in the hollow die 4, now moves downwards and forms the lid portion with a curved surface as shown in Fig. 7. The lugs 6 provided on the plunger 2 now push the blank along the supporting bars 7 so that the front flap comes into position over the shaping'channel 8. At the same time the blank Zu intended to form the lower'part is view of the com -moved towards the blank forming the lid m tion by means of the plunger 9 so that the two blanksmeet midway over the shapin channel 8.- After the neck strip Za is placed above the lunction of these blanks, the forming block F which is formed with a suitably'curved surface and V which mus inoperative position is pressed by a downwards by means of the plunger 12. The forming block first contacts with the neck strip and presses it against the end flaps 01' theblanks located over the shaping channel, the resiliently supported counter-plunger 13 i'orming anabut:
ment. 01. further downward movement of the plunger 12 the plunger 13 is correspondingly moved backwards and the blanks are given a U-shape. In order to ensure that the lid portion will fit properly around the curved lid forming block the left hand channel wall 14 is arranged to pivot at 15. A spring 16 bearing against the wall 14 presses the latter into the position shown in Fig. 1, the hook shaped lug 14' on the wall 14 bearing against a pin 17. On passage of the box part through the channel the plate 14 is pressed backwards. On the passage of the forming block with the work through the shaping channel 8 the four opposite side flaps are pressed at the same time by the folding cam members 8', 8 against the forming block. After the form ing block has moved with the work into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4 a plunger 18 moves forward and pushes it into the channel 19 where in known manner the still projecting ends of the neck portion are folded by means-of a suitably actuated projection 20 and by a folding finger 21 projecting into the shaping channel. The two upper side flaps' strike against bending bars 22 which bend these side flaps against the forming block. The work passes from the channel 19 the bottom of which is formed by a resilient plate 19' to a device which in known manner provides it with a binding strip.
It should be noted that the one wall 19" of the channel 19 is shaped to correspond to the curvature of the lid portion. It should also be noted that the plunger 2 as shown in Fig. 6 is provided at its forward forked end with two lugs 6 which, at the time when the lugs 2' feed a new blank from the pile 1 to the shaping station W push the blank provided with its curved surface 1 forward on the supporting bars '7.
Actuation of the various movable elements-of the device may be effected as follows:
The lug 2' which feeds the blanks Z0 from the pile 1 is actuated as follows:-
A link 23 is pivotally joined to arm 2 of said lug and one end of a lever 24. The latter is pivoted to the.machine frame 9 at 25. The other end of lever 24 has a roller 26 which tracks a cam 27 keyed to a shaft 34 which is driven in a manner to be presently described.
Lug 9 which feeds the blanks Zu from the pile 1' is actuated as follows:
A link 31 is pivotally connected to lug 9 and to one'end of a lever which latter is pivoted to the machine frame at 32. A link 28 is pivotally connected to lever 30 at 29 and to arm 24 at 24'. In this manner motion of both lugs is accomplished by a single cam. It is, of course, understood that lugs 2 and 9 are guided horizontally in suitable manner.
1 Matrix die 3 is reciprocated vertically as folows:--
The matrix has a roller 36 mounted on an ex tension which tracks a cam 46 keyed to a shaft 41.
Die 5 is actuated as'follo'wsz- The upper end of said die has two rollers 43 and 44 pivoted thereto in spaced relationship and between the said rollers a cam-42 is borne on a shaft 45 to which it is keyed.
Cams 42, and -46 are driven by means of a sprocket chain 86" which passes oversprocket wheels 3'7, 38"and 35 keyed respectively to shafts 41,45and34.
guide 48 on an extension of the machine frame is actuated as follows:
A lever 50 pivotally engages projection 12' on plunger 12 by means of a forked end 50'. Said lever is pivoted to the machine extension at 49. A link 51 is pivotally connected to lever 50 intermediate its ends and also pivotally connected to a lever 53. The latter is pivoted at 52 to the machine frame. Intermediate its ends said lever 53 has a roller 54 which tracks a cam 55 keyed on shaft 34.
Plunger 13 which is slidably borne in guides 61 having a spring 62 between guide 61 and its head, to retain it in raised position, and a lateral projection 13 at the lower end of the lower guide 61 to prevent it from being moved completely out of guides 61, is actuated as follows:-
A lever is pivotally mounted at 59 to the machine frame. One end 60' of said lever engages the projection 13. The other end of said lever is provided with a roller 60 which tracks a cam 58 keyed on a shaft 5'7.
Suitable gearing 56 connects shafts 57 and 35 and either of the two may be driven from a source not shown.
Plunger 18 which is slidably borne in the machine frame is actuated as follows:-
A link is pivotally connected to said plunger and to one end of a lever '78. The latter is pivoted intermediate its ends at '79 to the machine frame. The free end of said lever has a cam roller 81 which tracks a cam groove '77 in a cam 7'7 keyed to shaft 57.
Finger 20 which is slidably borne on plunger 18 is actuated as follows:-
A link 72 pivotally engages said finger and one end of a lever '73. The latter is pivotally mounted to the machine frame at '74. The free end of said lever has a roller '75 which tracks a cam groove '76 in a cam '76 keyed to said shaft 5'7.
