The present invention pertains to meclianism for forming receptacles or containers out of paper or similar material, in which the blank or sheet of paper is brought to the rial is secured in one end of the tube.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide improved means for wrapping the blank around the mandrel, to cause its edges to lap, and be suitably secured together, such as by. previously applied adhesive on one of the lapping edges, that is moistened prior to the edges being brought together.
A further object is to provide in connection with the said folding means, an arrangement whereby the blank will be pressed against the mandrel on two opposite sides at the middle portion with the edges projecting upwardly, and thereupon the said pressing means will be caused to follow around the upper part of the mandrel to bring the edges to lap.
A further object of the invention is to-provide means for suitably vmoistening the blank dried gummed edges, prior to these edges being lapped on the mandrel.

As shown in the drawings the mechanism is carried by a base 1, with suitable supporting legs 2, 2. At the rear is a main driving shaft 3, see Fig. 1, supported in suitable bearings 4, Y on standards to extend the length of the ma- 90 chine. The shaft 3 is driven by suitable means, such as a motor 5, see Fig. '3, through reducing gears 6, and a chain 7, engaging a sprocket 8, on shaft 3. Suitable means are provided to seciire these lapped margins, preferably by previously adding a suitable gum or adhesive, as indicated at 1 1, on the blank which'margin is engaged by the opposite margin.
Means are further provided whereby the previously gummed and dried margin will he moistened by water or steam after the blank leaves a pile of them, and before the edges are bent around the mandrel and lapped.
This mandrel 13, of frusto-conictlform is carried on a support 15 by its large end, with the other portions free to have the blank wrapped around it and slid" off. at35 to the arm 32 to swing on an axis at a right angle to the pivot of the bar 31. A coil spring 36 between the arm 32 and the bracket 34 presses the bracket against a stop 37 on the arm, to normally hold the bar 31 in they desired position relative to arm 32, but permit it with the bracket to swing down. Means are further provided for'locking this shaft 55 in each of these positions, shownin Figs. 31 and 32 as comprising a lock bar 175 in a housing 176,..that is retracted by; spring 177 to be free of the notches in a disk 178 fast on shaft 55. A crankiarm-179 connects with the bar 175, and carries a roller- 18 0 that rides on a cam 181 fast on shaft 55. This'cam will serve to pushin the lockbar to hold the chain and holders in an indexed position. ,The bar is then returned by this;
5' springv so the disk and shaft may be advanced to next position. Theseholders each comprise complementary blocks 56, '57 mounted on hinges, at their lowerparts on rods 58, 59 carriedv by plate 60. These bars are reciprocated after each body T is complete on the mandrel from a cam 66, on
shaft 3 by arm 67 on cross shaft 68 that carries crank arm 69.
A latch 71 on one of the holder sections engages pin 72 on the other section to lock the holder closed. A roll 74 on the latch is engaged by bars 75 and 7 6 alternately on the frame that will serve to swing the latch to lock and to releasethe sections when it is desired to eject the finished container.
After the finished body is advanced from the mandrel 13 to one of the holders, it is thereby carried to another station, indicated generally'by 77, where the bottom is inserted by means, best shown in Fig. 11. Here the bottom diskis cut from a web 7 8,'by a tubular punch 79 on a plunger 80 and the latter is mounted in a housing 81 and swung by arm 82 carrying a gear 83 engaging a rack 84 on the punch 80, a bar 85-having a crank pin riding in a' cam slot member 86 on the shaft 3.
The web from the roll 87 is fed down by any suitable means indicated at 88 intermittently to present the web between the cutting punch 79 and the punch block 89. The latter has a reduced bore at 90 to receive a plunger 91 that is advanced after the disk is thus cut and will force the disk through the reduced bore and form a V flange thereon. Further advance of this plunger will move the flange disk into the bore 92 in the holder-51 now held at this station, see Fig. 24. The plunger 91 is swung by lever 94, bar95 with pin 96 rid- I ing in slotted cam 97 on the shaft 3.
The advance of the carrier chain will bring the bodywith inserted bottom to another statiori indicatedat 98, seeflFig. 1. Here a shaft 99 rotated from suitable 'means such as a motor 100, carries a spinning disk 101. This shaft has a sliding connection at 102 by means of pins 160 on the motor shaft moving in an 'apertured disk 161. A similar disk 103 is positioned at the nextstation 162.and operated by similar shaft 104 by a motor 105, with extensible connection 106. These spinning disks 101 and 103 .are simultaneously advanced to engage the bottom member in p the bodies carried by the holders. A cross shaft 107 carries rock arms 108, 109, that engages collars on the shafts 99 and 104. ' this station a plunger 117, see Figs. 1, and 3, a mounted in a standard 118, is swung by crank arm 119 and link 120. A cam arm 121 engages a cam 122 on shaft 163, gear -164 on the latter through gear 165 engages gear 166, on cross shaft 167; on the latter a gear 168 engages gear 169 on main shaft 3, to actuate the plunger at the proper time. A plunger disk 123 on 117 will strike the end of the container and move it out of the holder into the chute, but it is first necessary to release the container from the holder, which is done by bars 124, 125 connected with the plunger 117 that engage stops 126, 127 on the holder, see Fig. 16, which -will move the sections apart, itfbeing understood that the latch 71 has been shifted as the holder arrives at this station by bar 7 5- for this purpose.
Suitable means are also. provided for feed- I ing the blanks 9 successively onto the bars 16, 17 on the mandrel, which is done by a traveling jaw member on a bar 129, see F igs.
6 and 8. The blanks 9 are placed on a table 128 and extend beyond the same a consider- .able distance at one edge of theblank as shown. Suitable means. are also provided for drawing down the lowermost blank in the pile on the tableatthe forward portion extending beyond the table as shown. A suction plunger 1 48 is provided that slides in a bracket, 149, connected by hose 150, with a suitable pump indicated generally at 151. A crank arm 152 connectedgwith the plunger and with a rod 153 serves to raise and lower the plunger from a cam 154on shaft 3 in. proper timed relation whereby the suction plunger will risejto engage the lowermost blank at the extended portions and when moved downwardly will draw downward this blank by bending it slightly as-indicated in Fig. 6. This will beheld in this position until the jaws are advanced and closed on the blank and it is released before the jaws retreat by a suitable valved device.
A presser bar 155 mounted in brackets 156 in the top of the blank holder is carried by arm 157 swinging on shaft 158 and is pressed downwardly by coil spring 159, to maintain 1 proper tension on the pile of "blanks, and permit additional ones to be inserted from time to time.
Means are further provided for causing a" 9 bend or crease in the blank 9 on the margins 11 and 12 that are caused to lap, that will facilitate the sealing by the gummed edge. Means for this purpose is shown at the front end of the machine in Fig. 1, and other views A table 182 on a standard 183 is engaged by a plate 184 on a plunger 185. The latter is moved up and down by lever 186. that carries yielding eccentric rod 187, see Figs. 4,# 13 and 14. This rod is actuated by an eccentric 188 that rotates free on the shaft 3 and it also carries an arm 189 with a beveled lug 190 projecting therefrom,. and normally pressed out from the cam by spring 191. On a cross bar 192 are fingers 193 engaged by .the blank9, when'inserted between the table and the plate 184. This bar has arm 194 that will rock lever 195 against tension spring 196 and move the notched end 197 away from its position normally supporting lug 190. This will permit the lug and arm 189 to swing out into the path of a pin 198 on disk 199, on
shaft 3, see Fig. 1. This will cause the arm and eccentric to be rotated that will move the bracket 187 downwardly and up to rock bracket or lever away from engagement with pin 198 and thus release the mechanism fromfurther movement. This creasing" device is preferably arranged to operated on several 130 blanks, and about five or six can be creased at each operation. The attendant merely forces this number of blanks against the arms under the plate that will automatically effect the movement of-the plate and withdrawing the blanks will cause the device to stop this operation. This arrangement is similar to that employed on punch presses. The blanks are then placed onthe feed table under the curved pressure foot without any feed interfering from the bottom of the pile of blanks.
Means for applying moisture to the blank 9 at the gummed edge 14: are shown in Fig. 6, where a pipe 255 is provided having openings or jets for the escape of steam or water supplied from a suitable source. A spring pawl 256 is arranged on arm 32 that will engage lever 257 that will rock a valve rod in the pipe to uncover the openingsitherein, permitting the steam or water to be directed against the partly bent blank indicated in broken lines in this view. This will occur on the inward swing of arm 32 and further advance will trip the pawl on the lever and the spray will cease. On the return of the lever 32 the pawl will slide over the lever and not open the valve device In Fig. 33 isshown the pump for operating the suction plunger 148 shown in Fig. 4. .The pump device 151 comprises a piston 250 operated from cam 251 by rod 252. A check valve 253 in the piston willengage a bolt 254 at the proper time to open the check valve and thus release the suction in the plunger 148. This is done when the plunger has drawn down theblank end and the gripper jaws engage the blank, thus releasing the blank from the plunger. stroke the valve will close and when the plunger engages the next blank the operation will be repeated.
