10 Claims.
The object of this invention is to provide an apparatus in which a complete operation will be 10 performed automatically by the machine, on merely furnishing the blanks for the body and the strip for the bottom, and which will carry out such operation in a better and more eificient manner than heretofore.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved means for wrapping or folding the blank around a forming mandrel, in which a previously gummed margin of the blank will be moistened and caused to lap to produce a tight joint.
Another object of the invention is to provide in connection with the lapped gummed margins, means forv pressing the lapped edges together, whereby to cause flutes or corrugations to be made at the joint.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved form of carrier mechanism that will receive the body from the forming mandrel, and convey it to the automatic mechanism that will insert a bottom in one end of the body,-and thereupon the body is advanced by the carrier to a spinning device to secure the bottom in the body.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved form of spinning device that will roll the flanged edge of the bottom and the end of the body into a kind of head, and in which mean's'are provided for holding the bottom member rigidly during the spinning operation.

14 is a section on the line l4'-14 of Fig. 13. 15 is an end view of the spinner.
Fig. 16 shows the ribs on the plunger.
Fig. 17 shows the ribs on the mandrel.
As shown in the drawings the machine has a suitable bed 2 with a series of supporting legs 3 at the ends and intermediate portions. At the rear is a main driving shaft 4 mounted in suitable .65 bearingsthat may be driven from a motor 5, see Fig. 1, through worm gearing 6 and a chain 7 engaging a sprocket 8 on the shaft 4. This main shaft actuates the blank feeding means, the blank folding means, the moistening means for the blank edge, the ram that seals the lapped joint, and the ejector to strip the body from the forming mandrel. From this main shaft is also actuated the body forming and inserting mechanism, the bottom spinning mechanism, and an ejector. The carrier in the form of an endless chain is intermittently advanced by gearing connected with the main shaft 4, shown in the form of a Geneva stop means.
In Figs. 69 is best shown the blank feeding and wrapping means. The blanks 9 are mounted on a suitable table 10 and engaged by a feed to be brought over under a forming mandrel 11. A suitable jaw member is shown in Fig. 8 comprising a fixed jaw 12 and a pivoted jaw 13 mounted thereon, the fixed jaw being carried by a bar 14 pivoted at its rearend on a lever 15, hinged to the bed 2 in a bearing block 16. This lever is rocked from a cross shaft 17 mounted in' suitable bearings that carries at the rear, see Fig. 2, a miter gear 18 engaging a miter gear 19 on the shaft 4. An arm 20 fast to the lever 15 is pivoted to a rod 21 having a pin 22 riding in a cam slot member 23 fast to the shaft 17; this cam being irregular to hold the lever at each end of its swing for a certain dwell, and to advance and retract the lever in timed relation to other operations. A coil spring 24 will tend to hold the jaws together pressing on the movable jaw 13, which latter has an arm 25 engaged by a latch 26 that will hold the jaws in the open position while they are advanced by the lever 15 to engage the bottom blank on the table 10, which latter may be drawn downwardly by a suction plunger 27 controlled by suitable means. At the end of the advance movement the latch 26 will engage a stop 28 that will trip the latch and the jaws will close onthe blank by the spring. As the lever 15 is retracted to bring the blank held by the jaws beneath the mandrel, as indicated in 110 Fig. Fig. Fig. Fig.
broken lines in Fig. 6, the lower arm 29 of the movable jaw will engage the stop 30 that will open the jaws and permit it to again engage the latch 26.
The mandrel 11 is shown as substantially cylindrical and is supported at its rear end on a housing 31 from the base. In this housing s ides a plunger 32, that when moved upwardly will engage the blank at its middle portion and press it against the lowermost part of the mandrel, the upper face of the plunger being slightly curved. This plunger is reciprocated in timed relation to the other parts by means hereinafter set forth. The blank now pressed against the lower part of the mandrel by the plunger is next engaged on each side by a folding member. In the housing 31 is mounted a slide bar 33, to which is pivoted an arm 34 at its upper end, that carries a roller 35 sliding in a curved slot 36 so that when the bar 33 rises the arm 34 will swing and carry the folding plate 37 fast to the arm 34, inwardly to fold the side portion of the blank around the mandrel, as indicated in Fig. 8, it being understood that in the lowermost position of the bar and connected parts the folder will be positioned below the blank as shown in Fig. 6. On the opposite side of the housing a duplicate arrangement is shown comprising bar 38, arm 39 with roller 40 guided in slot 41, and folding plate 42. The bar 33 has a rack portion 43 engaging a gear 44 that carries a pinion 45 turned from a segment gear 46 through an intermediate pinion 47. The segment carries an arm 48 pivoted to a bar 49 that carries a roller 50 running in a cam slot member 51. The latter is mounted on a cross shaft 52 extending to the rear, see Fig. 2, and turned by a miter gear 53 thereon engaging a miter gear 54 on the main shaft 4. In a similar manner the bar 38 has a gear portion 55 that is reciprocated through gears 56, 57 and 58 and a segment gear 59, identical with those just described. Arm 60 on the segment is pivoted to a bar 61 carrying a roller 62 that runs in a cam slot member 63 on the cross shaft 17. It will be understood that these folding members will thus operate in unison from the two shafts. On the shaft of the gear 44 is a crank pin 64 that by a link 65 connects with an arm 66 that swings in the housing, and carries a cam 67 that engages the extension 68 of the plunger 32. These parts are so designed that the plunger will rise after the blank has been fed beneath the mandrel, as the folding plates rise, and will be retracted when they are moved back.
As the blank is folded around the mandrel one edge is engaged by a suitable moistening roll 69 carried by a slide 70 in a suitable standard 71 mounted on the base, see Figs. 3 and 6. A lever 72 swings on this standard and has a forked end 73 engaging a pin 74 on the slide, while the rear end of the lever has a roll 75 held in engagement with cam 76 by spring 189, see Figs. 2 and 3. The
. latter is mounted on a cross shaft 77 in suitable bearings that is driven from the main shaft 4 by chain 78 running on a gear 79 on shaft 77 and gear 80 on the shaft 4. By the timing of this cam slot the roll 69 is lowered to engage the blank as indicated in Fig. 8, when the latter is raised by the folding plates. This roll is rotated by an extensible belt 81 from a pulley 82 on the roll, which belt engages a pulley 83 on the shaft 17; and a perforated steam pipe 140 on slide 70 with flexible connection 141 directs steam constantly on the roll. Y
It will be understood that the folding levers and plates by the controlling cam slots will cause the blank edge 84 to fold down on the mandrel before the other edge 85 that is gummed and moistened, is brought down on top. This lapped edge is now'engaged by the sealing means in the form of a plunger 86, that slides in the standard 71 and is rocked by a lever 87whose forked end 88 engages a pin 89 on the plunger, see Fig. 3. A roll 90 on the rear of this lever is held by spring 188 in engagement with a cam 91 fast to the shaft 77, and which cam is timed to bring down the plunger just after the gummed edge has been lapped. In order to produce a better sealed joint the plunger 86 has its engaging face provided with ribs or corrugations 92, and the mandrel has a similar ribbed face 185 beneath the joint, which ribs inter-engage when the plunger is brought down, thus producing a fluted or corrugated joint. This has been found in practice to make a much stronger seal of the lapped faces. When the plunger 86 is brought down under high pressure to engage the mandrel, since the latter is supported normally at its rear end only for the rethe plunger when the latter is brought down.
Thereupon this block swings down away from the mandrel not to interfere with the body nor with 'the blank when presented and wrapped.
The body being now finished on the forming mandrel, it is ejected therefrom onto a carrier device. The latter is now formed of an endless chain carrying a series of holders. This as shown comprises blocks or plates 93, see Figs. 1 and 11,
connected by links 94 to constitute an endless chain, that passes around suitable sprockets 95 and 96, one of which is given an intermittent drive to bring the cylindrical holders 97 thereon successively opposite the mandrel 11. These holders 97, that may be tubes, arecarried on their front ends by a bracket 98 on the front extension of the plates 93, see Fig. 10, so that the holders are free to receive the bodies from the mandrel 11. The finished body is ejected from the mandrel by means of rods 99, 100, carried by a head 101 suitably guided to move along grooves 102, 103, in the mandrel and reciprocated by a lever 104, which lever is swung by link 105 with a pin 106 operating in a slotted earn 107 fast on the shaft 77, and operates in timed relation to eject the finished body after its operation by the plunger or ram to seal the joint. The chain of the carrier is intermittently advanced by the shaft 108 of the sprocket 95 being driven from a Geneva stop movement 109 of any desired form, see Figs. 2 and 5, that is intermittently advanced from a shaft 110 turned by miter gears 111 and 112 from the rear shaft 4.
The finished body is now carried by one of the holders 97 having been moved thereto by the ejector from the mandrel. At this stage the carrier chain is intermittently advanced a unit distance, that is the distance apart of the holders on the chain, so that another holder is brought opposite the mandrel to receive the next body as formed. It will be understood that this advance of the holders is what might be termed one cycle,
1 the free edge of the flange.
that is a complete operation of feeding a blank, folding it around the mandrel and sealing the lapped edges, and closing the seam by the plunger, and the ejecting of the body onto the holder. At each cycle a body will be placed on a holder and advanced and these holders with the bodies are brought successively to certain stations in the advance of the chain. At a certain convenient location is arranged mechanism that will produce a flange or cup shape bottom, and insert it into one end of the body. As best shown in Figs. 2 and 10, on a standard 118 is mounted a cylinder 119 in which slides a tubular punch 120. Opposite the end of the cylinder is an annular die 121 that is entered by the punch to cut the bottom from a web 122 carried by a roll 123 on. a bracket 124, suitable feeding means indicated generally at 125 are intermittently actuated to feed the web down between the punch and die. Inside of the punch 120 slides a plunger 126, with a head 127. The punch 120 is first advanced to cut the disk from the web and then the head 12'! is advanced that will force the disk inside of its margin through a reduced bore 128 of the die 121 and thus form a flanged bottom member. The holder 97 is brought directly opposite this bottom forming mechanism and'registers with the die, so that the further advance of the head 127 will force this bottom member into the body end, it being understood that the other end of the body engages a flange 129 of the holder 9'? with this end of the body projecting beyond the tubular holder. The means for operating these parts are shown in the form-of an arm 136 rocked by a link 131 that engages a slotted earn 132 at the main shaft 4. The arm carries a gear portion 133 engaging a rack portion 134 of the punch 120. The head and plunger 126 is rocked by a lever 135 that carriesa link 136 engaging a suitable slotted cam 13'? on the shaft 4. It will be understood that'these cams are relatively arranged to first advance the punch 126 to cut the bottom disk from the web, and thereupon the head 127 is advanced to form a flange and insert the bottom in the body on the holder. Means are further provided to prevent the retraction of the head after it has forced the flanged bottom into the body, shown in .the form of a stripper plate 138 that has its upper end somewhat U shaped and is raised to engage the head just beyond the edge of the bottom. When the head retracts this stripper will positively prevent any outward movement of the bottom by engaging This stripper, see Fig. 12. slides in a bracket 139 and is reciprocated by a lever 142 that carries'a pin held against slotted cam 144 on the cross shalt 1'7.
Upon further advance of the chain and holders beyond the mechanism for inserting the bottom. the body carrying this bottom is brought to rest opposite a spinning device, shown best in Figs. 13-15. Upon a suitable bracket 145 slides a plunger 146 that at the rear carries a sleeve 147. A rod 148 slides in this sleeve and a coil'spring 149 engaging flanges 156 and 151 on these members tends to retard the rod sliding into the sleeve. This rod 148 is reciprocated by a lever 152 pivoted at 153 and which carries a roller 154 riding in a slotted cam 155 last to the main shaft 4. At the front end the plunger 146 carries a head or disk 156 that is advanced by this cam 155 to press the bottom member 157 after compression of spring 149, against the disk 158 secured in the holder 97, and remains in this poj sition under spring pressure during the spinning operation, while the spinning rolls are advanced and roll the flange and the bottom end into a bead, and thereupon retreat. On the plunger 146 slides a long sleeve 159 that carries the spinning wheels 160, 160, and which sleeve is freely rotatable on the plunger. This sleeve carries a pulley 161 that is splined on the sleeve to permit the latter to move back and forth, and a belt 162 runs from pulley 161 to a pulley 163 on the shaft of a suitable motor 164 by which the head and spinning rolls are carried around. To move the head back and forth, a yoke lever 165 on the rear end of the sleeve 159 engages a slotted collar 166. as shown in Fig. 2. This lever 165 swings on a pedestal 167 and carries a roller 168 operating in a slotted cam 169 fast on the shaft 119. By this means it will be understood that the head is first advanced to press the bottom member against the cross disk 156 in the holder, and thereupon the spinning head is advanced to spin the flanged bottom and body to form a bead, as indicated in Fig. 14. This disk on the plunger remains in this position under spring pressure while the spinning rolls are retracted, and dur-- ing the operation this disk will prevent turning of the flanged bottom by the action of the spinning rolls.
The conveyer chain will advance the now finished body beyond the station for spinning and at the next rest period it can be ejected. This is efiected by an ejector head 1'76, see Fig. 2, having a pair of rods 1'71, 1'72, that are guided in a bracket 1'73, see Fig. 4. A shaft 174 extends across the end of the machine and turned by miter gears 1'15, 1'76, from the main shaft 4. A lever 1'1"? is mounted on a bracket 1'78 and connects by a link 1'19 with the ejector head 1'16. An arm 186 on this lever engages a bar 131 carrying a pin 182 that operates in a slotted cam 183, fast on the end shaft 1'74. By this means the finished body containing a bottom rolled therein is pushed from the holder into a suitable chute 184 and delivered from the machine.
It will thus be seen that the machine is entirely automatic in this operation, being supplied with a stack of the blanks, and with a roll of the web for the bottom members. The bottom member is brought over under the forming mandrel and then folded around the mandrel, with the gummed margin moistened by a steam roll, and the lapped edges pressed together to form ridges or corrugations. This body is thereupon ejected into a holder on a chain and conveyed to the mechanism that forms the flanged bottom from a web, at which station the flanged bottom is pushed into the body. This holder is further advanced to a spinning mechanism that will roll the bottom flange and the body end into a bead, and which mechanism serves to hold the bottom member against rotation during the spinning operation. The holder is thereupon further advanced and at a subsequent rest period the now finished body is ejected from the holder. It will be seen that the body member as formed on the mandrel is ejected into a holder, and as this holder advances to the station where the flanged bottom is inserted, a number of rest periods intervene, as indicated in the plan view of Fig. 2. This will permit drying of the gummed lapped joint previous to the spinning operation. It has been found in practice that the ridges or corrugations formed in this lapped joint by the ribbed plunger and mandrel form a much stronger and tighter joint.
