METHOD OF AND MACHINE FOR MAKING' PAPER BOXES.
Application filed September 8,1924. Serial No. 736,564.
To all whom t may concer/1t.
Be it known that I, EMIL JAGENBERG, citizen of the German Republic, and residing at Dusseldorf, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Methods of and Machines for Making Paper Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the method of and machines for making paper boxes, and the object of the improvements is to provide a machine in which a neck ring placed around a core is placed on a blank of card board supplied from a pile thereof, ywhereupon both parts are forced into a shaft for pressing and fixing the side portion of the blank to the gummed neck ring, the box members moving downwardly within the shaft and being dried therein, whereupon they are conveyed by a slide way into another shaft wherein they move upwardly for having the cores remoi ed therefrom.
F or the purpose of explaining the invention an example embodying the same has been shown in the accompanying drawings in which the same reference characters have been used in all the views to indicate corresponding parts. In said drawings,

Fig. 5, is a plan view'in section taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4,
Fig. 6, is `a perspective View vshowing a core, a neck ring and a blank assembled for being forced into the shaft, and
Fig. 7, is a similar view showing the blank with its side members glued to the neck ring. f
In the example shown in the drawings my improved machine consists of twoA yframe members secured to a base plate or foundation and having a plate or table 3 secured to their. top. To the table 3 a magazine 2 is secured which is adapted to receive a pile of blanks of card board 1 and to discharge the same at its bottom, a reciprocating slide 6 being mounted below the magazine for successively taking therefrom the blanks. In front of the magazine aA pair of cleats 60 are securedto the table 3 at opposite sides of a. hole 8O thereof, which provide a gui-de way for the blanks taken from the magazine for guiding the same into position above a vertical shaft 7 mounted on the frame position corresponding to the size of theV boxes by screws 68V and 41.
In front of the cleats 60 a plate 11 is secured to the table 3 by means of screws 12, and at opposite sides of the said plate slides 13 and 14 connected with each other by a crosspiece 38 are guided in guide ways 36 and 37. To the slides 13 and 14 frames 15 and 16 are adjustably secured, and on the frame 16 a plate 17 is supported by means of bolts70 and springs 69 permitting the plate 17 to yield towards and away from the frame 16. The frame composed of the parts 15, 16 and 17 isV adapted to have a core 9 and a neck ring 8 placed thereon for carrying the same into position above the blank 1 located above the shaft '7.
Above the shaft 7 there is a plate or plunger 35 adapted to force the core 9, the neck ring 8 and the blank 1 downwardly and into the shaft 7, and the said-plate or plunger depends from a cross-piece 81 secured to a pair of rods 34 guided in suitable guide members 71 secured to or made integral with the table 3. At their bottom ends the said rods 34 are connected to suitable gearing'adapted to impart thereto reciprocating movement.
At the top end of the shaft 7 means are provided for pressing the side portions of the blank and the neck ring together and to produce sharp corners. As shown said means consist of a pair of pressing plates 83 and 84 mounted respectively on reciprocating rods 99 and 99 guided in brackets 86 depending from the table 3. To the rear end `of the rods 99 and the inner brackets 86 springs 105 are attached which tend to force the plate 83 inwardly and against the adjacent side portion of the blank, and the rods are` formed with collars 87 engaged by arms 88 secured to a rock shaft 89. To the rock shaft f an arm 90 is secured which is connected with a suitable operating mechanism to be described hereinafter. rlhe rods 99 are connected by a cross-piece 9S acted upon by an arm 97 of a rock shaft 96 connected by a` bevel gearing 95 with the shaft 89, so that the plates 83 and 84 are sin'iultaneously reciprocated by the springs 105 and the operating mechanism as will be described hereafter.
Later-ally of the shaft 7 a shaft 43 is mounted through which the boxes moved downwardly through the shaft 7 are moved upwardly. Preferably the said shaft is equipped with cushioned and adjustable side walls similar in construction to the side walls of the shaft 7. rl`he boxes are conveyed to and lifted within the shaft 43 by means of a slide way 42 rockingly mounted at 44 and extending from a point below the shaft 7 to a point below the shaft 43, and adapted to be rocked upwardly and downwardly by means of a rocking lever I 46 secured to a rock shaft 45.
For operating the mechanisms so far described the following gearing is provided. In suitable bearings a driving shaft is mounted which is adapted to be rotated from a shaft 49 carrying a pulley 46v through the intermediary of a pinion 50 and a gear wheel 51 loosely mounted on the shaft 25 and having its hub 57 formed with coupling jaws. On the outer end of the shaft 25 an arm is rockingly mounted which is acted upon by a spring 52 tending to force the same with a lug 72 into coupling engagement with the jaws of the hub 57. `Yormally the said arm is engaged by a beveled nose 54 made on a lever 55 holding the same away from the said jaws. The lever 55 is keyed to a rock shaft 56 having a foot lever 24 mounted thereon. Then depressing the foot lever the nose 54 is retracted away from the arm 53 which is therefore thrown into coupling engagement with the jaws of the hub 57. There fore the shaft 25 is rotated. Then releasing the foot lever 24 the lever 55 gets into the path of the arm 53 and rocks the same out of engagement with the jaws for interrupting the rotation of the shaft 25.
To the shaft 25 a disk 23 is keyed which is formed at its end face with a cam groove 73 engaged by a roller 74 of a lever 22 jointed to an arm 75 keyed to a rock shaft 76. rlwo arms 21 of the latter are connected by links 2O with the slides 13 and 14 for imparting reciprocating` movement thereto. fr crank arm 26 secured to the shaft 25 is connected by a link 27 with a crank arm 28 of a rock shaft 29 having a bell crank lever 31 secured thereto. One arm of the said lever is connected by a link with a lever 5 secured to the rock shaft and connected by a link 4 with the slide 6.
The other arm of the bell crank lever is connected by a link 33 with a cross-piece 78 carrying the rods 34 and 35. To the shaft 29 an arm. 700 is keyed which carries a weight SO.
rl`he shaft 25 carries a cam disk 94 engaged by a roller 93 of a rod 91 guided with its slotted bottom end 92 on the shaft 25 and jointed to the arm 90.
To the shaft 45 the lever 46 is secured which is therefore; rocked upwardly and downwardly by the lever 5.
For operation of the machine by hand a lever 29 carrying a handle 59 is securedl to the shaft 29, as is shown in Fig. 2 inA dotted lines.
The operation of the machine is as follows:
1n the position of the parts shown in Figs. 1 to 3 a blank 1 has been placed by the slide 6 into position above the shaft 7, and the slide is about to be retracted away from the blank. The plunger or plate 35 has been lifted into its uppermost position, and the slide 13 to 17 is in the position in front of the shaft 7 and the hole 80.
A neck ring 8 having glue applied to its outer face is placed by hand on a core 9, the joint 10 of the ring being located at the middle of one of the longitudinal sides, and the block 9 and the neck ring 8l ar placed on the plate 11 andy into the frame 15, 16, 17 with the neck ring bearing on.
lugs 18 and 19 of the frame 15, 16 so that it is held on the core in closed position. Now the clutch 53, 57 of the driving shaft 25 is thrown into coupling position by means of the foot lever 24, so that the shaft 25, the cam disk 23 and the crank arm 26 keyed thereto perform one rotation. By the first part of the rotation the roller 74 is engaged by a portion a ofthe cam groove so that it is forced upwardly, and the arm 21 is rocked to the right, thus carrying along the slide 13 to 17 and the core 9 and the neck ring 8 placed thereon. The core and ring `get into position above the blank 1 and the shaft 7 and they are held in this position by the roller 74 riding in a concentric part of the cam groove 73 provided between the point a# and a point b. During this part of the rotation of the shaft 25 the crank arm 26 rocks the shaft 29 in anti-clockwise direction. Thereby the slide 6 is retracted from the blank 1 and into position at the rear of the pile of blanks 1, and the plate 35 is moved downward.
ly and into engagement with the core 9 located above the shaft, which core is thus forced downwardly and into the shaft 7, the side members or wings ln of the blank being bent upwardly and against the gummed neck ring 8. The core and box are held within the shaft by friction and they force the lowermost one of the cores and llO boxes previously made out of the shaft and on the slide way 42. After the shaft 25 has been rotated through 180o the plate is moved upwardly and the slide 6 begins its forward stroke for shifting another blank 1 into position above the shaft 7. Shortly thereafter the rollerv 74 is engaged by the part of the cam groove and thereafter by the portion of smaller radius, whereby the slide 13 to 17 is again shifted forwardly or to the left in Fig. 1 for receiving another' core 9 and neck ring 8. After the plate 35 hasbeen lifted the cam disk 94: is moved so as to permit the springs 105 to press the plates 83 and 84 against the blanks, neck rings and cores located iu the upper part of the shaft for bending the corners of the blank into sharp form.
By thus repeating the operation of the machine the finished boxes gradually move downwardly within the shaft 7 and there is plenty of time for drying the gum. The boxes and cores which are successively pushed out of the shaft 7 fall on the inclined slide. way i-2 and they slide thereon into position within the bottom part of the shaft e3. During each operation of the machine the slide way 42 is once rocked upwardly by the lever i6 for lifting a box and core placed thereon into the shaft 43, thus lifting the boxes piled up within the shaft. Iflhen arriving at the top ofthe shaft the boxes are removed by the attendant, and the cores are taken out of the same for being used again. Within the shaft i3 the boxes are held by spring pressed pawls 47.
For removing the finished boxes from the cores a suitable apparatus is mounted on a side portion 102 of the table 3. To the said portion a pair of spaced bars 103 are adjustably secured by means of angles 10d, the distance of the bars being such as to permit the cores and the boxes to be placed between the same. The upper parts of the bars project slightly inwardly and above the top edges of the boxes for holding` the. same in position when removing the cores. After removing the core the box is removed from the bars by means of a new box and core pushed between the same.
1While in describing the invention reference has been made to a particular example embodying the same I wish it to be understood that my invention is not limited to the construction shown in the drawings, and that various changes may be made in the general arrangement of the apparatus and the construction of its parts without departing from the invention.
I claim:
1.
